I am in the requirements identification phase in the endeavor of developing my own interactive services website from scratch and would like to thank you tapananand for confirming the initial skills needed that I've identified as being pertinent as well as you ewail1 for identifying skills the need of which I had not identified.

Hi rtrethewey, thank you for your reply.

I'm kinda out in the boondocks here so the libraries have had slim pickings. I did find a website that, so far, has been useful:

http://www.html-5-tutorial.com/

...been more of a review but I have learned that the <font> tag has been depracated in favor of the <p> tag.

I'll continue to monitor this thread for additional recommendations as well as provide any pertinent and useful resources that I may come across.

Thanks again and I hope you have a wonderful holiday(s) season.

Hi All,

I would greatly appreciate considered recommendations on books pertaining to HTML5, CSS and Javascript, for starters, either as dedicated subject reference or in some combination. If a combintion of these subjects are addressed in a given book then additional subject matter (such as game applications, jQuery, mobile applications, etc.).

After being away from the industry for about the last 15 years, I've recently decided to get back into the IT field - first by getting a firm grasp of fundamental website mechanics, design and creation, and then re-acquainting myself with IBM (formerly Lotus) Notes and Domino.

My initial focus would be in learning how to create interactive websites that have data input, storage and manipulation components.

I've perused a few search returns on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble but, with suspect on-site reviews, I don't feel comfortable with making a selection as yet.

I'm a bit old school, so I'm most comfortable with a book to hold, but I would be quite appreciative for on-line or alternative media references as well.

aeinstein

Thanks for your replies nezachem and Adak, very helpful and very much appreciated.

PS: My apologies nezachem, I totally missed the quoted part of your reply, which is why I asked for clarification.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

TYVM for your reply nezachem. So the text is wrong in regards to mathematical operators being considered as tokens?

Paul

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Hi All,

Just starting my online C programming class and my textbook states "In a computer language, a token is the smallest unit of the language that has a unique meaning. Thus, the reserved words, programmer-created identifiers, and all special mathematical symbols, such as + and -, are considered tokens of the C language."

Since the text previously states that the three type of C identifiers consist of keywords/reserved words, standard identifiers and programmer-created identifiers, then I'm presuming that both keywords and standard identifiers are also tokens, correct? And that punctuation marks ("()", "{}", ";" etc.), even though they represent attributes of the language, that they are considered to be part of the grammatical structure and are outside the definition of tokens, per se?

I'm looking to register a domain name and I don't want any "add-on" services. "Back in the day" it was much more straight-forward, as you could only register a DN from a couple of organizations, but now there's such a plethora of sites that offer registra services that I'm finding it a bit confusing. Any recommendations for a site(s) where I can just getting the DN I want registered? Also, how long does a typical registration last, or is that variable now as well? Assistance would be greatly appreciated! :)

Hi all,

I'm trying to setup two pan/tilt/zoom webcams, one for my bro back in NY and one for myself here in CA, so that we have two way audio and control of the cam at the other person's location. Since each webcam will be behind our routers I'm trying to figure out how we'll be able to access them remotely.

I've had this webcam (link snipped) recommended to me - although I'll be receiving close-out pricing that significantly reduces the list price. I also had "dipmap" recommended to me (for remote access), but sourcing information on it is proving rather difficult and what little I have found out about it indicates it's a corporate/enterprise-level product.

Your recommendations and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Any recommendations on e-commerce hosting companies? I'm currently getting back into the technology arena - via robotics rather than information - and will be looking for a site to host information that I'll be posting on the progress of my project builds. I'm then going to transition to a blog or forum format, and then institute an e-commerce endeavor. It's not required of course, but ideally I'd rather stay with one hosting company throughout the transitions if I can find the right fit. Your comments and recommendations would be most appreciated!

Hi All,

For about two weeks now my cookies are all being cleared automatically when I close my browser - regardless of which browser I'm using (in particular this is forcing me to re-log into any username and password accessed sites). This started about the time I installed the Chrome browser to check it out, but since the issue has arisen I've done a system restore to over a month ago. Prior to that I double checked to make that cookies were being accepted and I removed the exceptions, although that had no permanent effect.

This is what I've double checked as of a few moments ago:

IE 8.0.6001.18813
..... Internet Options
.......... General tab
............... Delete browsing history on exit [not enabled]
.......... Security Settings tab
............... Miscellaneous
.................... Userdata persistence [enabled]

Mozilla Firefox 5.0
..... Options
.......... Privacy
............... History
.................... Keep my history for at least [90] days.
............... Cookies
.................... Accept cookies from sites [enabled]
............................. Exceptions (none)
....................... Allow third-party cookies [enabled]
....................... Keep until: [they expire]
............... Private Data
.................... Always clear ... when I close Firefox [disabled]
.................... Ask me before clearing private data [enabled]
.......... Security

Assistance in this would be greatly appreciated!

I reread the entire thread to check facts as well as to pull out what I think is pertinent info, which follows:

1) The two computers were able to communicate via the network previously (so, they should be able to communicate once again).

2) It's an interesting tidbit that your LAN play of SS2 stopped at the same time - did you play it from the XP machine only?

3) Both systems are part of the same named network, being "WORKGROUP".

4) From zeroth's post you were able to identify & rectify the issue with the "restrictanonymous" setting.

5) On the Vista machine the network link in the Network and Sharing Center utility appears to be roaming even when you're actually connected to the "WLAN_AD" network.

6) You're getting error code 0x80070035 on the Vista machine - this can actually be pointing us to the problem now that I've looked up the error code on MS's support pages (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958285/en-us). Did you setup a VPN for the two machines which has now failed?

7) You've tried setting up a stand alone network (ie, through the router) with the two machines, temporarily turning off all security programs *after* the network had been isolated, without resolution.

8) It appears that you've added Nvidia Network Interface Cards (NICs) to both machines. In order not to butt our heads against the wall unnecessarily here I'd *strongly* recommend physically removing the extra NIC from each machine …

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Hi Jonnie, I've copied your IP info for the two machines, which I show as follows:

XP IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.128.0.79
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.128.255.254
        DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 198.41.0.4
        DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 198.41.0.4

Vista IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.34
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
        DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
        DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 80.58.61.250
                                            80.58.61.254

This tells me that both machines are on separate networks, among other things, which is fine, but to troubleshoot an issue that's proven so problematic the best way to do so is to break things down to as basic a scenario as is possible under the circumstances. Please let us know if you're willing to connect the two machines directly via a cross-over cable as a temporary step in resolving your problem?

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Ok, well it appears I'm out of luck here, I guess. Last-ditch effort...any ideas on how I can reset all my network settings to default so I can start over from scratch?

Thanks.

Hi Jonnie, Sorry I haven't been replying - this is the first automated notification I've gotten on this thread since my last post! Before you reset everything try disabling both of the tunneling adapters on the Vista laptop. If you haven't done so as yet, and don't mind spending a few extra bucks, get an ethernet cross-over cable and connect the two computers directly together. This will rule out any issues that might possibly be arising from using the router and is as basic a connection as we can get to rule out external issues. Of course, whenever you change your physical connections make sure you do a complete shut down, wait a full ten count at least and then restart each computer.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

With your connection to the internet disconnected, but your router still up and running, temporarily disable an software firewalls, virus scanning and any other transmission security software you're running on both machines, and then see if the can communicate as a stand alone home LAN. Remember to reactivate your software before connecting back to your ISP! And yes, please go ahead and post the ipconfig/all info too.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Hi Jonnie_Cellmate,

Sorry I've been away for a bit, but to answer your earlier question you would place the return from the ipconfig/all command between code tags: [ then the word CODE then ] (ipconfig/all contents) [ then / then Code then ]

It sounds like the home network is setup, since both machines are in the same named workgroup. Let's check to see if there's anything blatantly awry with your configuration on the XP machine. Please pull up a console window (click Start, then Run, input "cmd" & hit enter), type in "ipconfig/all" and hit enter. Then left click on the little "C:\" icon in the upper left hand corner of the window, click Edit and then Select All. With everything selected do a ctrl-c to copy everything. With that in the clipboard go ahead and open up some text file, such as Notepad, and click into the body of the document and do a ctrl-v to paste the contents of the clipboard into this document. This is just a holder in case there's a mess up in posting the info here. When you post that same info here please remember to use the code tags. ttyl :)

PS: It wouldn't hurt to do the same thing with the Vista machine, but I've only had a Vista machine for a few weeks a couple of years ago, so I'm not familiar with how things need to be setup on that. The basics should be the same though.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Will you be connecting either/both computer(s) to the internet, say via a router?

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Have you double checked to see that the home network is still setup on each machine? That they're part of the same workgroup and all?

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Mmmmmm, I'd start with connecting the old PC directly as possible - bypassing any router(s) etc. Just to establish a baseline of connectivity.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

If/when you run into this issue again you can try the following:

1) Do a normal shut-down of your computer system.
2) Note state of status lights, if any, on router, once PC is completely powered down then unplug the power cord to your router, preferably from the back of the router; leave off at least one minute.
3) Note state of status lights, if any, on modem once router is completely powered down then unplug the power cord to your cable modem, preferably from the back of the modem; leave off for at least one minute.
4) While waiting remove and re-instert ethernet cable at PC (aside from some laptops you should hear an audible click when plugging an ethernet cable end [RJ-45] into an ethernet port). If you're not *absolutely* positive of your cabling configuration trace this cable from your PC to the router; unless the cabling is color coded I would do this regardless for each cable. Remove and re-insert ethernet cable at router that's connected to PC in question. Remove and re-insert ethernet cable at cable modem running to it from the router.
5) Once at least one minute has passed from unplugging the cable modem power cord reconnect it.
6) Once cable modem reaches previously noted state of status lights with router off then power up router.
7) Once router reaches previously noted state of status lights with PC off then power up PC.
8) Once computer …

Great to hear it robroyxdry, and Thanks for the update. :)

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Please open a console window (Start, Run, type "cmd" & enter), type in "ipconfig/all" & hit Enter. Left click the little "C:\" icon in the upper left hand corner of the window, click "Select All" and then do the same and click "Copy". If you would then paste that into a post here - for easer reading I'd recommend placing the text between code tags. The issue you're describing can have a number of causes so we might as well as try to either focus in on, or remove from contention, as many possibilities as we can, starting with the simplest to diagnose.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

yes they are quite abit differnt. 2500's are just waht they are 2500's they arnt modual at all. 2600's are totaly modual everything can be loaded and unload and they can have any type of port you buy for them. but as its a personall lab you can probally stick with 2500's

never go into hubs. hubs are a waste of bw. they will clog the network swiches should always be used in place of hubs

For anyone reading this *VERY* old thread, the reason why Zachery's advise to go with switches instead of hubs is spot on, is that hubs receive packets and distributes them out to all ports regardless of it's one ultimate destination, thereby wasting a lot of bandwidth and slowing down the network segment it's on. Sometime after starting this thread I learned that a switch reads the packet and discerns what interface it is intended to, and then sends it out only to the port that it has associated with that interface. I know this is very old but I'm doing some housing cleaning on setting threats that I stated and have been resolved as solved, and thought this clarification may assist some poor lamented soul out there! :}

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

If you have an SOHO style router you're only going to have essentially two connections, right? ^.o It'll have the input side, i.e., the ISP connection(s) (coax, RJ-45, etc.) and the output side - one, two, four, etc. RJ-45 LAN ports. I realize I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, so I'm still trying to figure out why you're asking for help.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

The most direct route to getting a static IP is through your ISP provider, as you know. It's up to them to offer products and services the deem viable, regardless of whether it matches what we consumers actually want. :P If what local providers aren't offering what you're looking for there may be another alternative available to you. Doing some searches along the lines of "static IP services" will result in finding providers that work along with your local service (read "additional cost!"), that can essentially mimic a static IP for you. Although I've never needed my own static IP address I have friends who have done this and been quite happy with the arrangement.

Hi,

Since ~S.0.S.~ beat me to asking about referrals I figured I'd ask about my next-most pressing issue regarding DaniWeb: I just noticed the sidebar section entitled "Syndication", and I'm wondering what that refers to?

Thanks :)

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

If you want to start off small and build yourself steping stones for your larger completed project - my personal preference would be to start off by using some sort of blogging site (gets you up and running quickly while you can contunie to work on the larger project) I think google provides a free service called Blogger.com I know a lot of people who would Recommend it (I’m also told, because it is owned by google you will get indexed and ranked quicker although this is getting into SEO a big kettle of fish you will enjoy later!).

Regards.

Thanks for the input jbnet - I hadn't thought about Google per se, but that was the general direction I had been leaning towards. What really caught my eye was your reference to SEO. Looking that term up and reading a short article about it, as well another entry on SEM, has made me reconsider my initial approach. It's still likely going to be essentially a blog to start with, but I will be doing a good bit of research on web site marketing before I start the endeavor. Thanks again!:D

You might want to read this, taken directly from the top of the forum. Granted, it refers to "homework help", which may or may not be the case in your situation, but the same principals apply.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Hi All,

I'm contemplating starting a site to chronical my experiences dealing with a common personal issue. For this I'm leaning towards using blog software, since at first I really don't expect much traffic at all, and I'm really not going to attempt to promote the site until it has at least some appreciatively informational, insightful, unique and/or otherwise useful content.

Eventually, I do hope to builld the site into a "proper" web community (which I vaguely envision as a forum of blogs with "side content"), and since I do want to provide for the opportunity for visitors to (possibly register and/or login, and) post from the start (or nearly so), I'm contemplating whether or not the better route to take would be to utilize forum software that either incorporates blogging capabilities directly, or that can be used in conjunction with separate blogging software. ( This idea literally occurred to me not more than two minutes before starting this post, so I haven't done any research on what particular software to use, among a host (literally at that!) of other aspects to the site, so I'm not even sure that I need to make the distinction of what software to use initially. )

Obviously I have a lot of work to do to get this started (not only with it's design and implementation, but also with it's conceptualization), so, in the interest of gaining initial information in order to make at least somewhat informed decisions to …

I have never actually used the Digital Mars compiler, but I have never heard anything good about it. I think you'd be better off with DEV-C++ or Borland 5.5 for free. DM seems to have major trouble when you wish to learn Standard C/C++ -- I don't think it conforms to any standard.

http://www.borland.com/downloads/download_cbuilder.html for Borland 5.5
http://www.bloodshed.net for Bloodshed DevC

Thanks WaltP for the suggestion. After reading a couple of posts made to this forum indicating that DEV-C++ would be amongst the preferred free compilers, I've actually already decided to switch over to it, but it's just a question of when. For now, I'm going to continue using DM only because it's what my instructor has advised us to use (I have to say that I haven't had any issues with it throughtout the course). I'm on the last unit of the (online) class and hope to wrap up the course by the middle of this coming week, so it won't be much longer. Then it's a question of whether or not my system meets the requirements, and if not how $oon I can upgrade it. Thanks again.

Hi All,

Is the naming convention typically used for C++ vector arrays, with multi-word identifiers, to use an underscore between the words?

I'm finishing up a C++ course offered by the local college - I'm taking one of the "classroom: online" sections - and I'm running into that usage in the text that we're using. The authors have always given some generic admonishment that 'this is how most programmers name someIdentifier', but they didn't do that with vector names - so I'm wondering if their naming convention is the accepted (official/defacto) standard, or just a format that they use and for whatever reason omitted a proper reference.

Thanks!
