i reccomend "Visual Basic 2005 Step By Step" my microsoft press, you can get it off amazon and it has lots of code samples and expalins changes between VB6 and .NET, has a section on basic ADO.NET using VB and MS access too

a) yes you can upgrade like that but it wont be legal (although ms will probably never find out) b) yes you can install linux, ubuntu is pretty easy to use, i can help you get started with that

2gb is the max that 32 bit windows oses can use for running programs. And dells do not stand the test of time (badly built and not upgradeable)

no. Access forms need access to be running to run. However, you could always use a programming language to write standalone applications which grab data from an access database
