The security would be the biggest problem.
Do you have remote access to a computer on the came network as the remote printer?
How is the printer attached?

I would recommend sharing files via a Network Attached Storage device, but only copies. This is general advice though. Give us more details about what you want to achieve, and we can help you reach your goals.

We ask "clarifying questions" to make sure we understand the issue. Don't be offended by warnings... many of work in IT all day, and try to help here in the evenings. I personally, like to see threads resolved, because others are looking for answers too.

Did you find a resolution for the problem, or can we help you work through it?

I'm sure you know this, but I will say it for others who may be reading... REALLY BAD IDEA!!! Sharing the system drive is asking for problems, but I'm sure you have your reasons...

Was the user profile created after the share was created?
Can you access other folders on the machine?

Can you offer some history? Was it working perfectly before it stopped working? I assume that you plugged it in; are you sure the charger is working? Did you recently drop it, or trip/pull on power cord? ...

There a lot of things that can cause a notebook to not start, so giving us some background may help lead us to the most likely cause.

Probably just a scratch on the disk. Try cleaning with dish soap and warm water. If that fails, you could try SkipDr

http://www.heartlandamerica.com/browse/item.asp?PIN=123026&DL=GAW1&SC=WIG20001&

DVD/CD drives are not all the same. You could try another drive; sometimes one will read through scratches better than another.

Maybe you should start from the beginning and give more information... IF it had an MBR, it WAS a system drive. If you changed the partition type, the old data may no longer be accessible. Not all Partition types are supported by all Operating Systems. If you are being prompted to format the drive, then the formatting is not recognized by the System.

Post back here with some details, and hopefully we can get you taken care of.

It sounds like you have some malware that has messed up your registry.

I am very interested in making sure this gets resolved.

I would normally ask you to download, install, and run combofix from bleepingcomputer.com, but their site is down right now. . . Maybe you could try it later?

The other thing you could try is to uninstall the "newer version," then install the downloaded version:

If you are a programmer, are are in the related field ... And programming IS making software!!

So you will use some methodology whether it is the "fly by the seat of your pants" method and making spaghetti code, or organizing your time, resources, abilities, and ultimately, your code using a standardized method.

Here are some basic questions (that may help you develop more):
-What Methodologies does your company use?
-What Methodologies do you find useless?
-Why . . . ?
-When . . . ?
-How . . . ?
-Where . . . ?
-Who . . . ?

It may help to focus your questions on what makes a good employee... How those that don't play by the rules (established methodologies) cause problems ... How those who do work within the methodological framework are valued. It can't hurt to drop a seed or two since you may be re-visiting the same potential employer. This time he will be asking the questions, so it won't hurt to have some of the answers he is looking for! :)

It may be helpful to compare/contrast it with another software development methodology. Agile Methodology is centered around organizing teams from veritable backgrounds together to complete a project. Other methodologies may be focused on ... [fill in the blank]

You said you already have the pros and cons laid out, so you just need some situations where you can decide what method you would use. You may also use several methodologies within the same project.

As small team of Java coders may be using one method to organize themselves, while another team may use a methodology that fits their paradigm. A business team may be sponsoring the project, for example, but they might use another methodology. When the two (and other teams) come together, they may govern their interaction with yet another methodology!!

I hope this helps.

XP......> C:\Documents and Settings\<dewabo>\Favorites\Favorites Bar

What I want you to understand is that it should have moved the IE7 Links folder to the IE8 Favorites Bar folder. That folder is a sub-folder of the Favorites folder. If you don't see your links on the Favorites Bar (which contains the same links as Favorites\Favorites Bar) then they were not found during the upgrade.

I think you are asking if the Links as they were in IE7 are still archived somewhere. That, I do not know, but if it is, it would likely be in a compressed folder. You could back-up your current favorites, uninstall IE8, Export your favorites from IE7, re-install IE8, and import your favorites backups. I have never done that before, but if your old links are that important, it can't hurt to try.

Good Luck

I'm not sure of this, but I think it is not the favorites bar, which is a folder in favorites. If you want it to stay as a toolbar, you need to:

-open Internet Explorer
-from the View menu, point to Toolbars and click to select Favorites Bar.

If the Menu Bar is not there, press ALT key to reveal!

Are you using a powered, or un-powered hub (does the hub have a power adapter)? An un-powered hub splits the amperage of one USB port among all the devices you plug into it. You may be under-powering the external hard drive. A powered hub will supply full amperage to your devices.

This is appropriately named, "Google Redirect." There are lots of variations of it. If you can't remove the hard drive and scan it in another machine, there is a secret I will share with you. Let's say you want to download hijackthis or Malwarebyte's Anti-malware (which you do). Search for what you want, Right-click the link, and select "Copy Shortcut." Now Right-click in the Address bar, select paste, and press ENTER. Do this rather than clicking links, and you will be able to get around enough to get some Anti-malware tools.

Your sound card has to pass the sound output to the HDMI, so I would guess that that HDMI would be under output devices for your sound card. The best approach would be to update the sound and video drivers from the manufactures website. If you don't find a solution there, you could just pick up an audio cable.

Well, I would say that you should set both the desktop and games to the highest resolution they will both support, and fix the shutdown issue. If our monitor has an automatic setting, you could try that. but a lot of monitors will only re-adjust only when they start up.

Dual monitors can be tricky. Both adapters need to be compatible with a dual configuration, AND with each other. You could try updating your BIOS, but I would doubt you will find success in that. The best thing to do is to disable the on-board video in the BIOS and install a dual-head graphics adapter, or another Diamond Stealth S60 RADEON 7000 - 64 MB-PCI adapter (assuming you have another open slot).

HijackThis is not listing errors, but what is running on your system. This following is malware: pj9q4.exe you can delete this registry entry... I'm suppose to say, "don't forget to back up your registry before making changes."

There are not fool-proof anti-virus programs. If you want to be more aware of what is running on your system, try Comodo, but be warned that it will drive you crazy at first because it asks for you to decide what to allow or block. This means that if you decide to block something you do not recognize, you may disable a good program! I have evaluated CA, and it seems to do a pretty good job, but there is no replacement for safe surfing practices.

I would also run Emisoft anti-malware it seems to find a lot of malware that MBAM does not (and MABM finds some that Emisoft does not). I don't recall if CA allows you to do a boot-time scan, but you may want to try that too.

Most routers list clients. They may be divided into how the clients (computers) connect. Those that use the windows default of DHCP might be listed in one section of the routers configuration page, while other clients (static) may be listed elsewhere. Sometimes wireless and wired clients are separated, and sometimes you can find all clients listed together.

If you are concerned about unauthorized access to your network, you may consider setting up encryption.

There is a switch that senses when you close the lid. If it was stuck in the process of working on it, the screen may not come on, but you say it responds to the input of closing the lid, so I would guess your just pulled a cable off that you didn't get back on right. Try just under the hinge cover, on the right-hand side. Make sure it is firmly seated. Also inspect the cable for correct routing and possible damage.

I would uninstall the samsung drivers and install the one that came with the disk(old one!) Then I would disable any software that updates the drivers automatically.

another thing I can think of is connecting it through a powered USB hub (it may be drawing more amps over time).

A third idea is to look in the device manager, view hidden devices, and see if there is a conflicting (malware?) driver.

Keep us posted as this may take some thinking...

Have you tried a restore point? You can use System Restore in safe mode, but you will not be able to undo it.

You can run System Restore again if that doesn't work (and another one is stored).

Gerbil:

It might malware since it is identified as "serial" rather than "unknown device," but waiting for reply to be sure I do not want to have shaludas delete a driver that just needs updated. I guess a generic driver for a serial port would be better than one that hangs... and it is not likely to ever be used... but I like to play it safe.

Microsoft says that one of these could be the problem:

-Mismatched system files have been installed.
-A Service Pack installation has failed.
-A backup program that is used to restore a hard disk did not correctly restore files that may have been in use.
-An incompatible third-party program has been installed.

So we would first ask ourselves:

-Did we manually install system files?

-Has Service Pack installation has failed?

-Have you restored any files or used system restore?

-Do you have third-party programs installed?

techsheaven 45 Posting Pro in Training

I guess it would be up to you, but something removed from a restore point would likely cause it to fail, or cause other errors if you ever even used it.

Good Luck

techsheaven 45 Posting Pro in Training

The best solution would be to try to reinstall the software and uninstall it again, but it is probably not an option for you. . .

You will need to go to another computer and download autoruns to a USB Flash Drive (or media of your choice):
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

If you don't have access to another PC, you could try to disable it like this:

Hold down the windows key and press r
type msconfig in the text box and hit ENTER
check the services tab and the startup tab for the unwanted program
deselect the check-box next to each entry (there may be several).
Click OK
Restart
After restart check box to not show Microsoft Configuration Utility
Click OK

I don't use Zone Alarm, but I will tell you you should turn off system restore, hit apply so it will delete all your restore points. Then turn it back on and set a new restore point. This way you will not restore a virus.

That's a great way to troubleshoot, but it may not be a matter of "defective," but capabilities. We have determined that the problem is with the network adapter (built-in) and/or settings. Getting an updated driver from the manufacturers website, or reinstalling the driver may cause the settings to be reconfigured.

techsheaven 45 Posting Pro in Training

There should be printing on the cables. CAT5E is the most common. I can't remember all the specifications, but CAT5E has better insulation and is faster because it resists interference. If your cable runs through a plenum (air ducts), or along electric wires, it will degrade. Even metal staples placed at exactly the same distance and cause problems. For these situations, we like to use CAT5E type plenum. It has a foil shield around the twisted pairs to help block interference.

I say all that to say this: if you move the long cable you may also be moving it away from the source of the problem (if it turns out to be a cabling issue).

Read the following to get a better understanding of RWin (Receive Window):

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6266

dslreports is a very good site to learn how to tweak every bit of speed out of your network.

MTUs on your adapters are set to the same. Sometimes a lower setting on this will yield a faster transfer rate! you can think of it as a box. If the box is too big it may get dropped. Smaller boxes will be less likely to be dropped, but you want to bring as much in each box as you can. Just keep that in mind as you read and it will make more sense to you.
