After quite some time (months) I've decided to clean up my email inbox, and the last email I got was a notification from Daniweb. Being reminded of good old times, I've decided to log in and check what's happening.
Just as I forgot to log in from time to time, I forgot my password. "No problem" I thought to myself, "I'll just reset my password, and all will be fine." Little did I know that it would lead me to the existential crysis of the day.
Sure enough, my email address wasn't enough. Dani added 2 questions for me to prove that I'm human... And I failed.
Being human that I am (I really, really am!) and having preferences and being overly-opinionated in every possible field, my answer to "What kind of device is IPad?" was "Crappy". Not that I find it crappy, I just generaly dislike mass-produced consumer items, but that doesn't matter.. what matters that I'm too much of a human to remember my password and not enough to pass as one.

Cheers!

You need to mount the drive (partitions) to be able to see them in My Computer.

To do so, follow these steps:

- Rightclick "My computer", Select "manage".
- In the computer management left pane select "disk management". On your lower right pane will appear all the drives and their partitions. On upper right pane you will see mounted and unmounted partitions.
- Find one that you need (unmounted ones don't have drive letter assigned to them) and rightclick it, and select "change drive letter and paths".
- In the next window click "add" and assign a letter to it, and you're done.

I believe flash drives must be FAT32

Not so.

If the drive settings are set on "Optimize for quick removal" in device manager, then the only formatting options for it would be FAT and FAT32.

However, if the "Optimize for performance" is selected instead, then the "NTFS" will become an extra formatting option.

But, beware:
If the USB drive is NTFS-formatted, then "Safely remove hardware" is mandatory prior to disconnecting it. Otherwise, data corruption is possible.

You can set the HD order in BIOS, making the SATA one first in line. Windows accesses the HDs primarily by drive's/partition's numbers designated by SATA or IDE channels, and not letters. By default, IDE channels come before SATA, but that can be changed in BIOS.

Once the windows are installed on "e:", it will remain as such. You can't change drive letter of system partition.

I have a motherboard that allows me to easily choose from which drive to boot from, if I press F8 during boot-up (when the "press DEL to enter BIOS" is displayed.. before windows boot menu). That way I could boot from my E drive, which would become C for that session.
It is not a multi-boot setup. It is multiple single-boot setups (however confusing and ridiculous that sounds).

I was suspecting GPU core to go over 80, which would explain the artifacts appearing on the screen. Apparently, that is not the case.

Colors changing, artifacts and erratic lines appearing with immediate crash point to VGA gone bad.

And those noises you hear would probably be fan(s) out of balance. Possibly dust buildup or damaged blades.

Ok, that's what it should be.

There should be entries in your event logs regarding volume errors. You should see if there is any info that could shed some light on what is causing this.

In case you don't see shortcut to your event log viewer in programs menu, change the taskbar and startmenu settings and check the "Display administrative tools"

Also, another aproach is to use Recovery console (XP setup CD) and run Chkdsk from there. It is more reliable than regular one. Also, it has different commandline options. Instead of /f, you'll need to run it with /p option.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Yes it would.

Before you try with XP setup CD, try this:

Click Start, then "run" and type regedit

Look for "HKEY_Local_mackine\System\currentControlSet\Control\Session manager". Click on that key and doubleclick on "BootExecute" in your right panel, and copy-paste the contents here.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

a) You can always "click" using keyboard.
b) If it is USB mouse, try PS/2 if possible. (vice-versa)

OK, guys one problem per thread.. I'm replying to Ensis.

The pop probably came from PSU since it is the only part that has enough voltage to make a pop. But the pop could've damaged any component. My suggestion is that you pull everything out except VGA CPU and one RAM stick and try to boot (no HD nor any peripherals attached) using 350W PSU. This is long irritating process, but it is the only way to find out if your CPU mobo and VGA are still intact. If it doesn't come back to life, try changing RAM. You can also pull out the VGA. Without VGA a healthy machine would give you POST beep code (if you have beeper) for no-VGA. Usually 7 shorts and 1 long beep. Same goes for no RAM, only different code (continuous short beeps). That way you would know that the mobo and CPU are OK. Keep plugging in one thing at the time and reboot until you find the damaged one. My bet is that it is memory stick, but could be any one of those. Or every one...

BTW those faint brown stains near your CPU is dust blown by the CPU fan + cigarette smoke (otherwise it would be light-gray and not sticky). Blown processor would look exactly the same as healthy one, since the heatsink is obscuring the view of the circuitry.

I have A8N Sli mobo, and only reason for the upgrade (apart from nForce 4 Chipset) is the socket 939. I had misfortune to buy my mobo just before the AM2 socket got released, and judging from the CPU prices, it was a bad timing for me.
I don't know about you, but I had to upgrade my HD BIOS in order to get it running in SATA II mode. That "upgrade" is caused by bug in nForce4 chipset, and it is possible that it is make-it-nForce4-only-drive upgrade. No reverting possible for me (Maxtor DiamondMAX).

So, I guess there are things you should consider before you go and install new stuff:

- Ground yourself
- Don't bend the needles
- Avoid water cooling. You know why. Big heatsink is all you need.
- Make sure you have floppy drive around. You might need f6 drivers.
- Make sure you run the make-disk utility before you start Windows setup (f6 drivers).
- Prepare all of the driver CD's for your hardware. Searching for one CD/DVD at the time is time-consuming.
- Connect everything (USB ports, all the PCI cards, all external hardware...) before windows setup
- Driver list to be installed (after the Windows setup is done):
1. MOTHERBOARD - Absolute MUST
2. CPU Support
3. Graphic Card
4. Other PCI cards, printers...
5. Latest DirectX

- Check the Hardware manager to see if there …

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Glad to hear that you saved the important files.

If your drive is operational, best and safest thing to do is to delete all of the partitions and create one or more using windows setup. There is a chance that you would need so-called f6 drivers. Those are ones that you are prompted for when the setup program launches ("press f6 for third party device drivers" or something) and you must prepare them on floppy disc prior to windows installation using bootable CD that came with laptop (one containing drivers). I can't tell for sure whether you need them or not. HP didn't specify what chipset is used with your laptop. If it is nForce 4 or later, then you will definitely need the f6 drivers.

Also make sure that the cables are connected properly.

If all that fails, then you know that you have a dead HD on your hands.

I agree with Janine. Rechargeable batteries are very lifespan-limited.

I could add 2 thoughts here:

1. Bad battery could be the symptom and not the cause. The cause could be bad charger/PSU that is not producing enough power to feed the machine and recharge the battery.

Btw, do you get any extra work time if you pull the battery out?

2. Also sounds like an overheating problem. Make sure that all the fans are spinning and no heatsinks are loose.

When I said "switch", I ment "on/off switch", not the voltage selector.

You must be certain that the PSU is one that's toasted. There could be number of reasons why your machine won't boot. PSU is the cheapet one. Good thing now would be warranty.

NBert commented: Helped with my decision to buy a new PSU. +1
Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

If the SATA drive shorted, it most probbably fryed the first PSU. New PSU dettected the shorting and protection kicked in.
Now, in this situation, the beeper would come in handy.

From the looks of it, seems like your motherboard is fryed by either fryed PSU or shorted SATA drive. That would explain graphic card and the off button not working.

I suggest that you use the warranty on the HD and mobo. If they ask you what happened, just say "it was working fine, now it won't work". Keep these details to yourself, 'cos they might refuse your warranty if they suspect that faulty HD fryed it.

Graphic card could be next in line, but that doesn't have to be.

Is 2nd SATA working fine?
Did you try reseating the graphic card?

J0EBL0W commented: Very helpful +1
Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

First boot after new card was plugged in is normally very long. That is because the system is looking for new drivers for the new piece of hardware.

I suggest that you install video drivers and DirectX drivers yourself, regardless of weather it has been properly installed or not by the system.
Insert the CD that came with ATI card, and use the setup program to install both video and DirectX 9.0c drivers.

You can use DirectX diagnostic tool (type "dxdiag" in the run menu) to check if there are out-dated drivers in the system ("DirectX files" tab). Also you can test the video card in the "Display" tab.

Regarding the memory, how many (long or short) beeps do you hear?

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

I was inspired to write this thread by a "The end of all life" blog and it is somewhat complemented by it.

Couple of years back I watched some documentary on TV about prolonging the human lifespan (in the medical way). There was a brief comment, a theory if you will, that got my attention.

The theory, in general, was that if you scan complete human body, capturing it's finest details down to the subatomic particle level, store that data in computer's memory and use it in a program that simulates laws of physics, add a virtual environment, you would get a fully conscious and fully functional human body in a digital form. The digital 1:1 copy of you. Only difference would be the with passage of time. You can imagine that the "simulation of you" wouldn't be in a real-time and to simulate one second of alive human body would take some super-computer years, maybe decades. But perception of time, or if you prefer, the time passage in the simulated universe would not be any different from the real time passage, if the laws of physics are same.

That sounds like a distant, but very possible future. One can even imagine that someone would try to make a simulation of not just one person, but whole community, or, perhaps the whole planet, giving that the tech. level of the distant future super-computers would be capable of such complex performance. And why stop there? Why …

I guess I owe some explanations.

I have a temper and a rebel soul that sometimes gets wrongly interpreted. I tend to engage in debate quite passionately, but never in a negative prefix. If I had such negative thoughts and opinions, believe me, I wouldn't have bothered to post them at all.

I apologize for my tone was misunderstood for angry or flamboyant.
I apologize if my opinions were taken as piracy-endorsing.

I deeply resent any form of injustice, including the injustice committed by pirate-endorsing opportunists that use non-licensed OSes, against group of programmers that work for Microsoft (including Bill Gates himself) developing very software that those opportunists actually use.

I also apologize for abusing daniweb by creating the alternate account, and thus bypassing the ban. You have to understand that it is very unpleasant feeling not being able to speak, especially after (wrongful) accusation.

If I'm reading this correctly, your PC isn't working, and when you use another PSU it is.

You'll have to change the PSU (how smart of me:cheesy: ).

Hmm... Piracy. What is piracy?

Here are my opinions and thoughts:

Definition of piracy:

Am I a pirate if I a make copy of Metallica's "Ride the lightning" so I wouldn't have to wear-and-tear the original? Or if someone liked the album and asked me if I could lend it to him for couple of days?
Sony says it is. Read the smallprint.

I say, if I buy the car, I can drive it anywhere I want. I can flip it over and set it on fire if I feel like it. If I BUY CD (as, it becomes my property), then it's MY CD and I can do whatever I want with it. That includes COPYING!

Nothing would make Sony happier that the situation that you couldn't make a backup copy of your favorite album. You would have to BUY ANOTHER copy. That would double their sales.
In that case, copyright law is nothing but a marketing trick.

I say pirating is PROFITING from illegal copying. Piracy is NOT copying.
Only problem is that today nobody can make any profit from pirating, with everybody having CD and DVD burners. Pirates are out of business for good. What is left of the real pirates are few ppl that are barely making any profit. Sony has no interest in them. There is not enough money there. Sony has more interest to go after little man.

Copyright law …

Bare minimum with video feedback would be motherboard, CPU & VGA. (keyboard is needed for the BIOS setup)
Some mobo's do have some functionality without CPU, but it only goes so far as CPU detection.
Try unplugging the VGA. Faulty vga makes whole system to die, but giving the syphtoms you described with the drives, I say your IDE controller got fried. Your last hope would be BIOS flashing via floppy.
In case your BIOS is so corrupted that it can't initiate VGA and IDE controller, that would correct the problem. (You'll need the floppy drive)
