The history of operating systems and their kernel designs might be an interesting project. This could turn into a very large undertaking what with IBM, DEC, Data General etc. Might be less stressing to concentrate on micro computer operating systems. You could get a pretty good story if you look into to how the efforts of Xerox, Digital Research, and Seattle Memory Systems led to the design kernel design we know as windows. You might want to investigate macro versus micro kernel designs. I believe QNX has a well designed microkernel.
