As per my understanding you can develop any kind of software except system software.
Then I guess continuing with Chat Application would be fine .... ?

Basically three types of software you can develop by using ASP.NET/C#.NET
1. Web by ASP.NET & C#
2. Windows by C# or VB.NET
3. Mobile by C#/VB.NET and some SDKs
Note: the Software can develop as per the requirement or thinking ! there is no limitations !
think application software, the kind that people use as utilities in conjunction with other softwares as asp.net and the .net framework as a whole depends mostly on pre-tailored classes.
But anyway if u think about it, there's so much u can do with code.
