Short version. In Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a race of people build what they consider to be the ultimate computer to answer the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. After many generations are born and have died it finally has the answer. When asked, it says "the answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42." When asked to explain this answer it replies that the explanation will require an even greater computer.
