I have a similar but unrelated problem. The "R-Driver" make USB 2.0 'USB-to-IDE' cable does not let my laptop (HP-Compaq nx9005, which has a USB 1.1 controller) recognize a 3.5" SAMSUNG 20 GB HDD. The HDD just keeps making ticking noise as if it is "hunting" for the boot sector. A 3.5" SEAGATE 20 GB HDD, on the other hand gets detected and works like a breeze with the same USB-to-IDE cable. The SAMSUNG HDD, BTW does work well inside a desktop or when used with another ("BAFO") make external USB-to-IDE cable! The manual accompanying the R-Driver cable makes no mention of compatibility of different makes of HDDs.
Has anyone experienced such a problem? What is the solution?
