update.exe Virus???

Ok a couple days ago I got hit bad with some Malware. I've been trying to get rid of it since then. I think I got most of it but my computer has been running realy slow and I noticed that I was getting the hourglass symbol popping up every couple seconds even when just sitting at desktop. So I checked Task Manager and Update.exe keeps popping up and it's usind 25%-30% of my cpu. So far all I ;ve done is disable Microsoft updates in Services in Administrative tools. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Make sure that you restart the computer.

I'm thinking that it may just be better to reformat and reinstall but I'm not sure that the disc that came with my computer (dell) will reformat the HD. I put the reinstall disc in and it never gave me the option to reformat and reinstall like my other computers did. I don't want to manually reformat and then have my reinstall disc not work.

Try this instead;

Download Dial-a-Fix and run it. Select the 'Check all' (green arrow) and then hit 'GO.'
Reboot when done and see how things are now.

I'm running the Dial-a-Fix and when it gets to the SSL/HTTPS/Cryptography section it gets to Stopping CRYPTSVC... and doesn't go any farther. It just keeps trying to stop it.

Try unchecking it and start again. If no go still, try it in safe mode.

I ended up having to do it in safe mode and it worked until it tried to register c:\WINDOWS\system32\mscoree.dll it said there was an error. and it didn't have any recommendations. And it still wouldn't go past the cryptography in regular mode. not sure if they are related or not.

Not really sure what the problem is. Do you have your XP installation disk? You can try this;

Go to Start | Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit the Ok button. Insert your CD if/when requested.
You will not see much happening whilst this is happening.

If that does not work you may have to do a system repair, unless someone can post a fix :).

I had the same problem, I used maleware antinytes and it got rid of the virus... and nearly all my files, pics, dociments ect are gone.

Barry, this thread is 3 and 1/2 years old. You need to begin your own thread
