A couple days ago, I inadvertantly downloaded Micro Antivirus 2009. With that, I had all sorts of issues with pop-ups, programs being blocked, etc. I was unable to do a system restore (first the Help icon was gone from my start menu, then when it came back, the System Restore kept failing). After reading PhilliePhan's post, I cleaned everything on the system, but had to use an alternate computer to download all programs since mine could not access any of those sites due to whatever is on the system still. I thought my problem was resolved only to discover several hours later that I could no longer access Internet Explorer. I would double click, and nothing would happen.
So, I started over with all of the cleaning and have attached my results.

Previously, could not access any sort of "help" website to include McAfee, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, etc. Also, Hotmail login page would not load. Google searches did not function as usual - clicking on links just opened up a new page with some sort of new search. After second round of cleaning, none of these things were problematic, but then IE stopped working. Third round of cleaning brings me here. Any help would be appreciated.

If there's any other information you need, please let me know. I tried to attach the HJT log, but it says it's an invalid file, so if you need that, I'll have to paste it into the window.

Hi michrandom and welcome to daniweb. Sorry it has taken so long to respond. Hopefully we can figure out what is going on here.

We do need to see that HJT log. Copy/paste is just fine.
I am curious, ESET Scanner shows nothing.
MBA-M shows only one file found and removed.
Can you get the previous logs? Those are the ones we really need to see.
In MBA-M you should be able to access the other logs by clicking on the Logs Tab. They all should be saved there.
Are ESET Scanner and MBA-M the only cleanup tools that you ran and removed with?

You should turn off the following programs until this fix is complete. Spybot TeaTimer.
Go into the program, at the top click Mode. Choose Advanced.
Then at the bottom click Tools. Then on the left side click Resident.
When that opens remove the check mark from TeaTimer. Close the program.
You also need to turn off AdAwareServices. To do this go to Start Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. When that opens the services are listed in alphabetical order. Double Click on AdAware When that opens click the Stop button to stop the service and in the middle there on Start Up type change that to disabled.
Now do the following:
Download ComboFix
Click on the Save button and then when it asks you where to save it, make sure you save it directly to your Windows Desktop.
Once the download is complete you will see the Combofix on the desktop.

*Close all open Windows including this one.
* Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix.
Doubleclick the combofix icon on the desktop to run the program.

Windows will issue a prompt asking whether you wish to run the program, click Run
You will then see a Disclaimer screen asking you to agree to the disclaimer. Press the number 1 key to accept the disclaimer.

Now just sit back and allow the program to run

Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all and just take a break as it may take a while for it to complete.

When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report.
This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.

When all is complete then please post back here with that log.

Hello Liz,
Can't apologize more for somehow missing your response. Can you run another HiJackThis scan and post the log here please, don't attach it, copy/paste it please.
Looks like all your problems came from a downloaded game. TriJinx I believe.
There are some more steps you will need to take but I would like to see a current HJT log before advising further.
Again I am sorry I missed your reply. I will keep a closer eye out this time and catch your next post ASAP.

I've never heard of TriJinx, but I have been playing quite a few games lately and could have easily downloaded it... In addition, I'm now having more significant issues with iexplore.exe. When I click on the link for IE, nothing happens, but I'll be running 6 or 7 different processes on my task manager all called iexplore.exe. I know this is some sort of virus, but not sure how to fix it. Definitely wasn't even a noticeable issue until after some of the other bigger stuff was fixed :)

I see NO iexplorer.exe running in this latest log. In your previous one there were three showing so it was happening prior to your running these latest fixes.

What happens if you go Start->Run->iexplore?
If it opens ok then problem is with the shortcut itself.
If that is the case delete the shortcut and try putting a new one on the desktop.
I don't see anything in this latest HJT log that would cause this.

You can try repairing using System File Checker
From Bleeping Computer

Method 1: Using the System File Checker
This method will scan all protected system files and restore ones that it finds do not match its internal database. This can take quite a while to complete so do not start this if you are limited on time. You may be prompted for the Windows XP CD, so make sure you have it available.
The steps to do this method are as follows:
1. Click on the Start button and then click on the Run option.
2. In the Open field type sfc /scannow and press the OK button.
3. Follow the prompts through the scan and when it prompts you to reboot, do so.
4. Test to see if the problem is resolved. If it is, you can stop reading this document. If not, you should proceed to the second method.
Method 2: Tricking Windows into letting you reinstall IE6
Since you already have Internet Explorer 6 installed the operating system will not allow you to reinstall over the existing installation. Due to this we are required to trick the operating system into thinking IE 6 is not installed. Please note that in order to use this method we are required to edit the registry. Incorrect editing of the registry can cause serious harm to your operating system so it is advised you proceed with extreme caution.
Follow these steps for repairing Internet Explorer 6:
1. Click on the Start button and then click on the Run option.
2. In the Open field type regedit and press the OK button.
3. Navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
4. Under that key you will see a entry named IsInstalled. Right click on that entry and left click on Modify.
5. Change the Value from 1 to 0.
6. Exit regedit.

I used the System File Checker and my XP CD. I never got any messages of any sort when it was done, so I'm assuming everything was successful. Is there anything else I need to do reference the Trijinx download?

Since this was an ActiveX program, yes....
one thing you CAN do is download and install a truly MUST have FREE program, SpywareBlaster from javacool software. HIGHLY recommended on most anti-malware sites. I truly would not run my computer without it.
To quote from their website;

The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.
* Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
* Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
* Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background.

Just download, install, update and enable. Close the program and that is it. Just check for updates manually once or twice a week and enable anything new. That is it.
You also should set a new, clean System Restore point.
To do this Right Click My Computer, choose Properties. When System Properties opens click the System Restore Tab. Place a check mark in Turn Off System Restore. You will get a message that you are turning it off, click ok or yes. It will turn off. Wait a moment and turn it back on by removing that checkmark.

Would appear that I "typed" too soon and my iexplore.exe issue was not resolved. I had to reboot my computer to install new updates to McAfee and when I was shutting down, I had to manually close out iexplore.exe 3 separate times after I closed all of my IE windows. So whatever was causing the problem was not resolved by the System File Checker. I am now going to download SpywareBlaster and we'll see if it finds anything.

SpywareBlaster is now installed and updated. I didn't get any messages from the program saying that it found any Spyware active on my computer, so does that mean that the Spyware issue has been resolved?
