How do I get rid of xadsjt offeroptimizer?

Hello!
I'm having trouble getting rid of some nasty adware. I've run SpyBot, Ad-Aware, and Hijackthis and still can't rid the computer of this annoyance. I've read the page on how to read the Hijackthis log and what to "fix", but when I rerun the scan, some of the same problems come up again. Looks like I need a pair of expert eyes. A buddy of mine caught it, we tried a bunch of differet tool's and played with hijacker, now im not a pro. But we didnt fix it fully. We did shut off active X, and switched from IE to firefox. Thats proably were you got it, so start by disabling ActiveX control's. Install firefox, and then await a nicely trained hijack pro here to help you, but if it was me id be suspicious of these files.

Sphyenx, thanks for your help. I've tried "fixing" those SurfSideKick lines, but they pop right back up when I scan again. I'm also wondering why these things haven't been picked up by Spybot or AdAware. I keep checking periodically for updates, but none exist and it seems that xadsjt offeroptimizer has been around for a while. Any thoughts, anyone?

Um gamma loader is needed with many applications and update's. Isnt it?. I use photoshop, it needs gamma viewer to process all of the multi millions color's. lol.

Winterac, you need to do a couple of things before fixing anything with HJT. First you need to get the latest version (1.98.2), and then you need to put it in a permanent folder, like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe, so it can safely save backups (you have it in a temp folder now).

When you scan with HJT, you need to have all browser windows closed in order to it fix things properly.

Remove the contents of the Temp and Temporary Internet folders for all users on the computer.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove WebRebates. Go to C:\Program Files and delete the Web_Rebates folder.

Close all browser windows, scan with the new HJT, and post a new log.

Alrighty, I have cleaned all temp and temporary internet files for all users. One user had a file called "CONTENT.IE5" which would not entirely delete. Please advise if this is a problem. It complained about not being able to find the file path for some files in some of its folders. Hmmmmm! Anyway, I have place the 1.98.2 version of hijackthis in c:\hjt\hijackthis and removed WebRebates in the Control Panel and deleted its folder. While I was in the Control Panel, I also noticed the 1800SearchAssistant installed and would not allow uninstall without going to the internet, so I left it for now. Here is the new HJT file:

One user had a file called "CONTENT.IE5" which would not entirely delete.

1. The "googledesktopnetwork1.dll" entries appear to be valid; they seem to be a component of Google's new desktop Search feature. Do not delete them (for the moment at least).

Also- "CONTENT.IE5" is a folder (not a file). The thing to do is to delete the contents of that folder (see step 3 below).

3. - Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

- Delete the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\odgcsu.exe

- Delete the following folders entirely:
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 2
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker
C:\Program Files\topMoxie

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders:

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

4. Reboot normally, run HJT again, and post a fresh log.

DMR, I have followed your directions step by step. On deleting user temp files, the system is not allowing me to delete one user's Content.IE5 folder because of some file in two of its folders. The error comes up for Y7EJUTMF and YUK0JKTD in Content.IE5:

Error Deleting File or Folder
Cannot delete ShowFolder[1].: Cannot find the specified file.
Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.

Also, when trying to delete one user's Cookies folder, I get this error:

Cookies is a Windows system folder and is required for Windows to run properly.
It cannot be deleted.

the system is not allowing me to delete one user's Content.IE5 folder...Also, when trying to delete one user's Cookies folder, I get this error...

When I said to delete the entire contents of those folders, I meant just that- delete the files in the folders, not the folders themselves. From what you're asking, it sounds like you're trying to delete the Cookie folders themselves, and Windows won't let you do that (as you found out).

Windows will actually let you delete the Content.IE5 folders entirely (because it will/can automatically create new Content.IE5 folders as needed). If Windows doesn't let you delete entire folders within Content.IE5 or the Content.IE5 folder itself, sometimes you have to go deeper and individually remove the files in those folders first. Windows may then allow you to delete the folder once it is empty. If not, you'll have to identify the actual file that is refusing to be deleted; the files name (or information in its properties) could tell us if it's anything to worry about or not. The folders inside Content.IE5 are ranmdomly named by Windows, so the folder names "Y7EJUTMF" and "YUK0JKTD" that you posted won't really tell us anything useful.

2. Your log shows that you got rid of a couple of the bugs, but not all of them. Are you positive that you entirely deleted the "C:\Program Files\WildTangent" and "C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 2" folders, as well as the "C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe" file? All three still show up in your log.

Have HJT fix the following entries, reboot into safe mode again, and double-check that the 2 folders and 1 file have been deleted. Obviously- if they still exist (or came back by themselves), make absolutley sure you fully delete them this time:

3. In terms of the 180Search Assistant and BullsEye Programs, don't even bother trying to use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall them. Even if you went through all of the (intentionally difficult) uninstallation process, it wouldn't remove all traces of the programs anyway.

See if these two utilities can remove the offending programs:

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window. Select all found items and have Ad Aware fix/delete them.

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found

* Run SpyBot.

When you first run SpyBot, it will walk you through a Wizard which will perform a few critical functions (making a registry backup, getting the latest updates, etc.).

1. Perform all of the Wizard's tasks.
2. Run the program. Once it completes, have it fix everything it finds.
3. Reboot.

Oh, right- I don't think I've posted the "whole banana" version of that general cleanup yet:

- Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders:

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.

On the road to recovery...looks like we have successfully defeated some of the big system bullies. Are we in remission or cured? Not sure, but no xadsjt offeroptimizer pop-ups have begun as of this writing.

DMR, again I followed your excellent and extensive instructions (which may have actually cleaned up the problem -fingers crossed). Some nagging questions...
I don't know why C:\Program Files\WildTangent and C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 2 and C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe were stil showing up in my hijackthis log. They were definitely not showing in my directory structure. However, wupdt.exe files with a number and a .pf extension were found in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch and another sort of wupdt file was found in Documents & Settings\All Users. Wasn't sure what to do with them, so I left them. Also, there were a number of WildTangent files in several users Local Settings\Application Data\Games and I left these, too.

When I was deleting Temp, Cookies, History, and Temporary Internet Files contents, I ran into these problems:

- Could not delete one user's \Cookies\index.dat file even though I was doing it in Safe Mode and no other windows were open. The error said: Cannot delete index: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. Is this a problem?

-Could not delete one user's \Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 folder. Inside the folder, there are two folders called Y7EJUTMF and YUK0JKTD with files called ShowLetter[1] and mb[1]. The error said: Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk. Is this a problem?

I have Ad-Aware 6.0, so I ran this with the more thorough search options you listed for Ad-Aware SE. What is Ad-Aware SE? Should I have this instead? Anyway, the scan found 154 objects which I removed.

I also have SpyBot installed and for the first time ever, it didn't come up with anything when I ran it. Now there's a good feeling.

Crunchie, I haven't run ServiceFilter yet. What does this do?

1. The good news: Your log looks clean to me now.

2. You can safely delete everything in the Prefetch folder, and since you found wupdt files in there I would do that now.

3. The Wild Tangent games do have a function that transmits usage info back to Wild Tangent and may automatically download and install program components; I'd give them the axe, personally.

4. Don't worry about the index.dat file in the Cookie folders. Read the note about that in my last post.

5. Ad Aware SE is the newer version of Ad Aware. Support for version 6.0 is being discontinued, so you should uninstall 6.0 and install SE instead.

6. Those 2 files in your Content.IE5 folders sound like they're either infected or have gotten corrupted somehow. Not being able to sit in front of your computer, it's hard for me to say. Get the latest updates for your Norton Anti-Virus, run a full system scan, and see if it flags those files. Also, if you have the full Norton Utilities package you can run the disk diagnostics to see if they find any filesystem corruption.
