Reboot into Safe Mode

Go to
C:\WINDOWS and delete the isrvs folder
C:\WINDOWS\System32 and delete hsrb.dll, if found

Reboot normally, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

Well, I followed all the instructions, and had HJT fix all of the identified entries. I then rebooted SAFE, and looked for the folder and the file. Neither could be found in WINDOWS. I rebooted normally, and re-scanned, and as you see, the "02 BHO", "04 HKLM"s and the "018 Filter" entries are still there.

Plus, when windows starts, I can see the iSearch Desktop search window at the bottom right corner, plus a "windows installer" dialog box opens up. Not sure what I've done wrong, but I appreciate the help.

Open Task Manager & end process on the following:
isrvs

Go to C:\WINDOWS and delete the isrvsfolder.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Reboot after doing the above, rescan with hijackthis, then post that log here please.

Hope ya'll don't get sick of me.

There is no process in Task Manager called isrvs . There was a Desktop.exe process which I have ended.

I cannot find an ISRVS in the Windows directory, nor can I find the HSRB.DLL in the SYSTEM32 sub-directory.

I keep selecting those items and "fixing", but they just keep coming back.

I will do it again as requested.

Thanks.
Ian

Ahh. I'm an idiot. The process is desktop.exe so just substitute that and follow the instructions as per above post.

Sorry. I'm back. and so are the entries !

I can find them all in the registry, plus the HJT startuplist generated shows the "DESKTOP.EXE" and "FFISEARCH.EXE" executables as Autorun Entries from the Registry.

Would it be safe to simply DELETE these entries from the Registry ? Also, the "Windows Install" that happens automatically is the "MSIEXEC.EXE". I have NO IDEA what this is, but prior to this iSearch crap happening, I never encountered this.

I'm really sorry to be a pain like this.

Ian

Download the Pocket KillBox
Unzip the file to your desktop.
Open TheKillbox.

Select the Delete on reboot option.

In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the 'Delete File' button (red circle with a white X) after pasting:

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe

When given the option to reboot, click NO.

Repeat for

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\sysupd.dll

On that last one click YES to reboot.

Post another HJT log when done.

Sorry, Crunchie. :( I get the feeling the Darn thing likes it too much here to leave!

I did as you recommended with the previous reply, and the results are the same....

I think I may have to look at actually editting the REGISTRY. Not my favorite thought.....

Ian

The desktop.exe is no longer running in your processes, so I am wondering if those are not orphaned entries in the log.
Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Have to make you reboot again. Sorry. See if they are still there after that. If yes,
Go here and download and run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.

Crunchie, everything is the same. I downloaded the VB Script and ran it, but I cannot find the output file anywhere. Not sure I ran it correctly.

Sorry.
Ian

The log file will be produced where ever you ran silent runners from. It's called startup programs with the date it was created.

Sorry crunchie.. can't find the log ANYWHERE .... ran from my desktop .... not there.... have done a search of my c, d, and e drives.... nothing....

I am in CHAT right now, if that will make things quicker....

Ian

I had the same problem when I ran Silent Runners, it says it puts the log in the Temporary Internet folder, but I couldn't find it there. What I did was put Silent Runners in it's own folder, then when I ran it, the log showed up in that folder; give that a try.

Put it in it's on folder. Still nothing.

Ian

Try a search for "Startup Programs" using today's date (or yesterday's, depending on which side of midnight you're on). If that doesn't work, try a search using *.txt

Still no sign of any "Silent Runners" log file.

Let's add something NEW to this ordeal. I just went into the REGISTRY and attempted to both modify and delete the entries for the DESKTOP.EXE and FFISEARCH.EXE autorun entries. It would NOT allow me to.

Am I STUCK with this CRAP forever ?????????

Ian

Go here and download FindIt.zip to your Desktop, unzip it and open the FindIt folder and doubleclick on find.bat. Let it run (please be patient, it will take a few minutes) and when it has finished gathering info, it will generate a file called Output.txt. Please copy it and paste it back in this thread.

Crunchie, you are certainly going above and beyond the call of duty here. THANK YOU !!!!!!!

Here is the log from FindIT......

Warning! This utility will find legitimate files in addition to malware.
Do not remove anything unless you are sure you know what you're doing.

Find.bat is running from: C:\Utilities\FindIt\Find It NT-2K-XP

Hope it helps.

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here and do the following;

Open regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Delete these two entries from there;

"Desktop Search"="C:\\WINDOWS\\isrvs\\desktop.exe"
"ffis"="C:\\WINDOWS\\isrvs\\ffisearch.exe"

Go to C:\WINDOWS and delete the isrvs folder.

If you have Adaware SE, run it now in safe mode. Otherwise download it before you start.

Back up the *run* key of the registry before you delete anything.

Reboot normally after doing the above, rescan with hijackthis, then post that log here please.

:) I'm FREE !!! I'm FREE !!!!

Well, ALMOST free.... lol

That DID it, crunchie. Guess I had to go into SAFE mode before deleting the registry entries.

As can be seen in the log, the SYSUPD.DLL is still referred to, but I guess I can go take care of that in SAFE mode as well, correct ????

Also, I still have the annoying issue with the "MSIEXEC.EXE still running. From what I have read, this is a "generic" windows installer shell, but I don't know why it runs actively now. Obviously, there are no parameters passed with it, otherwise I would see WHAT was attempting to be installed. I had to do an entire C Drive and Windows reformat and re-install on boxing day, so I have been SLOWLY trying to re-build my application base back to where it was before. I don't know, but could this be a rogue implementation that stuck around after a failure?

Thanks again crunchie. I was beginning to think I might need to do another re-format and re-install to clean things up.

Ian

Yep, just clean up that dll file in safe mode and you should be good.
Haven't got an answer as far as MSIEXEC goes. Sorry :(.
