"Page Cannot B Displayed, Cannot Find Server, DNS Error" messages are appearing on increasing number of pages when browsing with IE6. Windows flag waves sometimes for 20 seconds, other times for 2 minutes before above error messages appear. Occurring for 6 months on only a few pages and now is occurring on 25% of pages. Dell Dimension 8250

Have tried many tricks scoured from this and other help sites: Ad-Aware, Spybot, CW Shredder, W2KWXPDNSfix, netsh winsock reset, delete Internet Temp Files, Web History, Cache files, flush DNS cache, re-reg DLL files, etc. without resolution of problem. Have Hijack This but cannot "read or analyze" report.

Plz offer any help, analysis of Hijack or Start logs, or other ideas to resolve this problem which is taking the fun out of web browsing. Thanks.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

Are you still having problems? If so, it could possibly be a proxy server problem.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = sas.r21.mchsi.com:8000
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.r21.mchsi.com

Yes, I continue to have the same problem.

I did not mark the two proxy server lines "caperjack" listed for fixing in hijack this as "caperjack" advised me not to since I recognized the addresses as my proxy servers.

I did experiment by placing a check in "Use a proxy server as your LAN" under LAN settings. I could not go to any site without notice that I was not authorized to access that site. So I went back and undid the check. Now I only continue to have the same problem I stated in the beginning.

What would I need to do to investigate whether it is a proxy server problem? Other ideas?

Go to Internet Options in IE and hit the connections Tab, then settings (not LAN settings). Under proxy server, uncheck the box and hit OK. Then apply and exit. See if the problem persists.

Can you download another browser, such as firefox and see if those same sites are accessible?

I was unable to uncheck the proxy server box because the "Settings" box was "hidden" or "gray" beyond my access. How do I get access to this?

Using Firefox the same sites are still inaccessible.

Problem persists.

Can you give us those URL's. It's strange that FF cannot get there too. I don't know why the settings button would be greyed out?? Never come across that before. Maybe you have to highlight your connection in the window beforehand?

Download the Hoster.
Run it and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.
Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it. You can edit the host file with this program too.

Not sure if this will help or not, but it's worth a shot. Trying it because both browsers are having the same problem.

Tried the "Hoster", but it did not note any problems, but my problem continues.

Did you get DNS errors on any of the pages I listed?

Take a look at this page that I found in a google search (on work computer) that seemed to describe my problem well and offers a solution (registry patch) which I tried, but am not sure if it unzipped.

http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/dns_cache.htm

Does this make sense? Does it remind you of any other ideas? What else might I try?

If you are not sure if it unzipped, then it didn't. You would see it, unless you didn't note the target directory. You need to run the file within the zip before it can be merged with your Reg.

You can also try this;

Close IE and go to Start > Run and run the following commands one after the other, each line followed by 'enter':

regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 comcat.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a short message stating the command was successful. Reboot.
