bluescreen errors and TrojanDownloader:Win32/Renos.IO virus

hi,
about 2 days ago after installing a video codec called alfa BR i started to get bluescreen errors with the code 0x0000007F(0x00000008,0x803D3130,0x00000000,0x00000000). i also started getting error messages from windows defender saying i had a virus called TrojanDownloader:Win32/Renos.IO. i have tried to run mbam but my pc wont let me run it.

Your pc is quite badly infected. Could you do a full scan with Mbam and post it's results.

I've tried to run mbam it installs fine but when I run it it says it has stopped working and won't let me open it. My norton 360 has been disabled aswell and when I try to turn it on I get the blue screen.

Seeing as that Norton rubbish is disabled anyhow, see if you can uninstall it.
I can suggest free replacement software that will do a far far better job than Norton isn't doing.

Let me know if Mbam will or won't run once Norton is gone.

Ok I've uninstalled norton and mbam still won't run. When I restarted my pc the Internet won't work but any programs you recommend I can get on my other pc and install them

I may have been a bit unclear in my last post. What I Meant was I can use the Internet on my parents pc and when I find the program I can save the .exe file to my memory stick and run it on my laptop.

Download Combofix from HERE

Warning, extreme caution should be observed with combofix.

It will take control of your pc, do not even touch your mouse and keyboard until combofix has finished.

It will restart your pc and then produce a log, post that log in your next reply.

A format seems to be about the only thing left to do. Do you actually have a windows cd?

If you already have MBAM installed on your computer try Uninstalling in, in Safe Mode if necessary. Then try to install it again the same way you did before only you are going to rename it before you run it.

Please navigate to the MBAM folder located in the Program Files directory.

Locate MBAM.exe and rename it to winlogon.exe

Once renamed double click on the file to open MBAM and select Quick Scan

At the end of the scan allow MBAM to remove what it had found then reboot.

ok i ran mbam and it found 19 infections so i removed them and restarted my pc. but when it came back on it was the same as it was before the scan except i am getting bluescreens more often.

Where is the MBA-M Log? I have to see that before giving other instructions? It will be in the program under the Log tab. Please copy/paste it here.

Also what is the exact error message you get when you get the blue screen? Is it the same one as originally posted?
Have you overclocked your processor? This is a common cause of this error.

sorry i could not find the log from the first scan so i scanned again with mbam and have posted the log. the bluescreen errors are the same as before. i have not manually overclocked my processor but is there a way it can happen automatically.

If you can update MBA-M please do that even if you can't update you need to run another scan with it and this time make it a Full Scan, you only did the Quick Scan. Run the Full Scan. Remove everything found. And be sure to REBOOT the COMPUTER after that.
Then post that log and another log from a new scan run with HJT AFTER the MBA-M scan and Reboot.

ok i updated mbam and ran the full scan and it found zero infections. my laptop has been working as normalsince i did the quick scan and it no longer has problems with virus alerts, internet connection, my web search and i havent had any blue screens so far.

1) Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel

2) Double click on Add/Remove Programs

3) Find "My Web Search" in the list of installed programs and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it. You may also want to uninstall any of the following items associated with FunWebProducts.

* My Web Search (Smiley Central or FWP product as applicable)
* My Way Speedbar (Smiley Central or other FWP as applicable)
* My Way Speedbar (AOL and Yahoo Messengers) (beta users only)
* My Way Speedbar (Outlook, Outlook Express, and IncrediMail)
* Search Assistant - My Way

Next, open My Computer, Drive C, and double-click on the Program Files folder

Right-click and delete the folders for:

*FunWebProducts
*MyWebSearch

Reboot the computer. Run a NEW HJT scan. The last log you posted was the OLD log, I need to see one that was run AFTER you have done all the steps above. It is entirely possible you won't find any of the items I have listed above but we need to be certain and then I DO need to see that NEW HJT scan log.

You need to run the two programs in proper order, this time they were run backwards. HJT at

10:59:25, on 31/07/2009

and then the MBA-M was run at

MBA-M should be run First, items found should be Removed. Then the computer rebooted and at that time the HJT scan should be run.
Can you do both again in that order and post only those two logs. MBA-M log first and then the HJT log.

Running the scans in the wrong order does not give an accurate HJT log.

Logs still are in order but the programs were not run in the proper order. The time on the logs shows that MBA-M was run AFTER HJT at 16:49:07 not before HJT which was run at 10:59:25. The running of MBA-M must be done BEFORE you run HJT and scan with MBA-M was done with a way out of date program. The data base is at least a week or more old.
Current data base version is 2538. andyours is showing 2421.
MBA-M has data base updates every day at the very least, sometimes more than once a day. The rule is MBA-M is ALWAYS update before running each and every scan.
Are you unable to update it? If you can then please do that and run a new scan, Remove items found. Reboot and then do another HJT scan. Post both logs.

ok ive just checked if the time is working properly on hjt and found out that every scan i run it will say time 10:59:25. the scan i ran was definitely run after i restarted my pc for mbam. i have tried to update mbam before every scan but when i click update it says it has been updated from 2421 to 2421. i havent used my laptop since my last post so the scans should still be valid.

This may sound like a dumb question, but the computer in question IS online when you do the MBA-M updates correct?

Yes the computer is online. It says it has done the update properly but there is no change in the database. Should I reinstall mbam and see if it changes?

Yes, why don't you try that. Totally Uninstall it AND HiJackThis too, though via Add/Remove then go HERE to download again to your desktop.
DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.
Reboot the computer.

Next download HiJackThis again, run the Full Scan and save the log.
Post back here with the new MBA-M log and the new HJT log.
Hopefully these will work correctly this time.

I reinstalled mbam fine but it still would not update and the scan showed 0 infections. But when I tried to get hjt I got a blue screen which I haven't had for a few days now. But the error message was different this time it was:
0x0000008e(0xc0000005,0x822b3e24,0x92b6f2co,0x00000000

Sorry to say but sounds to me like Rik's original suggestion, a reformat may be the way to go. Obviously there are some damaged files there which are not allowing proper cleaning and repair.
