Hi, I'm new here so please forgive me if I am posting in the wrong place. I have been having problems for the last two weeks and have tried everything I can think of but have got nowhere. Basically about 2 weeks ago IE6 started acting up it would not browse certain websites coming up "cannot find server or dns error" aol browser worked partially on these sites but not completely ie if i needed to log on it wouldn't do. I've tried deleting temp files etc ran anti spyware and adware and Mcafee Anti virus. When all this failed i installed Opera - same problem and i installed firefox(which I must say I do like the looks of) but still sites won't load.Also tried winsockfix One example is www.royalmail.com it just comes up blank. I used to be able to click on a link in Outlook and it would load but now nothing. I know you knowledgable people are volunteers but I would really appreciate some pointers. Please take pity on me. Oh I use XP SP1 (my machine doesn't like sP2) IE6 &AOL9 on broadband if that is of any use. I have posted hijack log in case this helps

Hi DMR

Thanks for taking the time to check my log.

I did as you said with my firewall, but it made no difference.

The Opinionbar software was only added a couple of days ago - way after the problems started so I don't think it is that.

One thing I have noticed is that after I type in a web address in IE it does say in the bottem left corner that it has found webite then the ip address before it goes blank, I don't know whether this is a clue or not. Thanks again for your help any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated

1. You said:

That might indicate a problem with accessing "secure" pages/sites. Is it only these types of pages that you're having trouble with, or do you have problems viewing some "normal" (non-secure) stes as well?


2. Unfortunately, problems with access at only certain sites (secure or not) can be caused by a number of things. Let's see if we can narrow things down:

A) Had you made any software or network-related hardware changes around the time that problem first appeared?


B) Flush out all of your Temp/etc. files manually:

Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (but not the folders themselves):

Important: One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if any data that you care about is living in those Temp folders, you need to move it to a safe location now, or it will be erased along with everything else!

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. Local Settings\History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.


C) Open an MS-DOS window, type the following at the DOS prompt, and then hit Enter:

ipconfig /flushdns


D) Again in a DOS window,

Re-register .dll files:

Type the following and hit Enter, and wait for the 'succeeded' message:

regsvr32 softpub.dll

Repeat the above for each of the following:

regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
