I've had some strange things happening on my computer. In the past week, I've noticed some pop ups when I use Firefox. Sometimes a new window with youtube will come up and just start playing some random video. Yesterday, my email account sent out a spam email about medication from china to random people in my contact list. Today, I tried to do the stuff as directed in the read this before posting thread. For some reason, I can't do some of it. When I try to download the windows malicious tool, it says there's no connection to their server. Housecall also doesn't work and one of the others does the no connection thing. Any ideas? I did manage to run ATF cleaner and the f-secure is downloading right now.

Follow the other steps given on the Read Me thread, including MBA-M and the DDS scanner. Post the logs here.

I cannot download either of those two programs right now. I get these error messages:
Firefox can't find the file at http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr.
Firefox can't find the server at store.malwarebytes.org.
I think I may have managed to do the dds thing earlier, I saved this to my desktop:

Oh, and I did manage to run the F-Secure online virus scanner. It found three spyware -
3 malware found
TrackingCookie.Adinterax (spyware)
* System (Disinfected)
TrackingCookie.Atdmt (spyware)
* System (Disinfected)
Adware.Webdir.M (spyware)
* System (Disinfected)
Nothing has changed with my computer, though.

Try this:
download a randomized renamed mbam.exe version from here.
Save it to the desktop and also rename it to explorer.exe. Double click and see if you can get it to install. If so, update and run a Full Scan and have it Remove All items found.
Reboot the computer.
Then post the log here.

That link doesn't work either. Whatever is going on with my email program (msn) is still doing it. I'm getting emails from people wanting to know why I'm sending this spam email. The only message I can ever read is the first one in line when I sign into my email account. I cannot read any of the others, send email or look in my other folders. I ran my Avast, and it found some stuff but that didn't fix the problem. I do have Hijack this on my computer. It's not wanting to work right either. I'll try again in the morning and let you know what error message it's giving me.
jholland1964 650 Posting Expert Team Colleague Featured Poster
Totally turn off your email program, don't access it or even look at the mail.
Boot to Safe Mode with Networking and again try to download the malwarebytes program from that link I gave above.
If you can get it to download then run the program in safe mode first and try to have it remove items found.
sarahlorrain 0 Junior Poster in Training
I couldn't run that program from safe mode either. I was able to run hijackthis in safe mode and get a logfile though. Maybe that will help? Here is the logfile.

Exit HJT and reboot the computer. Again, stay OUT of your email.
Run a new HJT scan and post back here with the log.

OK, I tried to run HJT in regular mode, and it gave me this message (short hand). System denied write access to the Hosts file. Click start, run and type notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and press enter. Find line(s) HJT reports and delete. Save file and reboot. For Vista: exit HJT, right click and choose as run as administrator.
I have no option to run as the admin, so I didn't do any of that. I rebooted to safe mode again and ran HJT where it doesn't give me that error message. Here's the logfile I got: (oh and by the way, my computer is running faster. This forum isn't displaying in the normal fashion. I didn't try to get into my email, so don't worry about that.)

This forum isn't displaying in the normal fashion
Do you mean all the time, since that change or while in Safe Mode? Nothing will display the same in Safe mode because all drivers are not loaded in Safe Mode.
Do you have access to a flash drive and another computer?
sarahlorrain 0 Junior Poster in Training
The forum hasn't been displaying correctly since yesterday. It changed sometime after I made my first post, but before I made my second post. If you want to see what I mean, I can take a screen shot.
No, I do not have access to a flash drive. I have no other computer in my house but I can go to the library, why do you ask?

Yes, do post a screen shot if you can get one.
I asked about a flash drive because that may be one way you could get these tools onto the computer but doubt the library would allow downloads like that.
sarahlorrain 0 Junior Poster in Training
No, I'm sure the library wouldn't let me do that. Facebook isn't working right either ... it won't let me comment on people's statuses. I can only do that when I use my phone.

I have some screen shots saved to my computer. I tried to upload them to photobucket, but the website won't work for me for some reason. The upload button just isn't there. Also, I noticed that eBay isn't working for me either. I needed to contact the seller of an item I won that I will have to wait to pay them until I can get to another computer; I don't want to log into my paypal account right now! It wouldn't let me contact them.
The attach button here won't work either ...

You have to stay off ALL of the social networking sites, email, banking, etc. Whatever is on there is obviously in control of everything.
Do you have disks that came with the computer?
sarahlorrain 0 Junior Poster in Training
Hey! Today my computer let me download the windows malicious software removal tool. It's running now. I'll let you know what it says/does when it's done. Says it can take a few hours.
jholland1964 650 Posting Expert Team Colleague Featured Poster
Ok, will keep my fingers crossed.
sarahlorrain 0 Junior Poster in Training
Just in case we aren't able to fix the problem, HP said that they have a support where I can pay $60 for them to take remote control of my computer and try to fix it and if they aren't able to, then I would be refunded my money. Have you heard anything good/bad about this service? I may use it as a last resort.
jholland1964 650 Posting Expert Team Colleague Featured Poster
Hey, they are giving you a money back guarantee, can't ask for more than that.

It's gone through 209000 files so far, and found nothing. I'm about to go pick up my kids from school. It might be done by the time I get home.
jholland1964 650 Posting Expert Team Colleague Featured Poster
Ok no problem

The windows malicious software removal tool didn't find anything. Finally managed to download the malwarebytes anti-malware thing and it's running now.

I'm going to run malwarebytes again. When I finished it and clicked to restart to complete the changes, windows closed and said something went wrong. Computer suggested that I install recommended Windows updates, so I did. Restarted computer and restarted malwarebytes.

Fantastic.
Run the ESET Scanner next and post the ScanLog with your post for assistance.
* You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.
Reboot again. Do a new HJT scan and post all three of those logs.
