I've got some problems on my Acer TravelMate 4674WLMi laptop. I'm running Windows XP Professional. IE7 crashes immediately upon launch. It asks if I want to send an error log, which I do. A couple months ago, my machine was attacked by a nasty virus that caused all kinds of pop-ups. Malware Bytes got me stabilized, but remnants remained and I ended up downloading Norton. It couldn't extract the bug, so I downloaded StopZilla. That actually got me back to somewhat normal. No more porn pop-ups, or faux "virus attack" windows that ask you to download an antivirus program. However, I started experiencing some blue screens of death. Also, when clicking on links, they would be redirected. New tabs with ads would launch. Along with that, IE7 began to crash occasionally. It was as simple as relaunching and I was fine for a day or two. Then it became more of a problem. I downloaded Firefox, which seemed to be a stable environment. About a month ago, IE7 wouldn't launch without crashing. Since I had been using firefox predominately, I just ignored this final event. However, now Firefox is crashing fairly often, about 2-3 times a day. It's rather annoying. And, if I'm not mistaken, I think IE7 needs to work to download any windows update packages from microsoft,...which haven't been happening for the past month.
So...yesterday, I resolved to get my machine back in working order. An older thread on this forum advised to download Ad-Aware, which I did and ran. It found some stuff and it removed it. Then it advised to run Spybot, which I did and it found more stuff that I removed. I tried to start IE7, but same thing happened - crash upon launch. This lead me to leave a post here. I read the 'please do this before posting' sticky at the top of this forum. I downloaded and ran the Windows Malicious Software tool. I ran the ATF-Cleaner program successfully for IE & Firefox. Ran the GMER scans (simple and full - logs below) successfully. Actually, after the initial scan, my machine began to bog down and become nearly unresponsive (minutes between responses.) I restarted into Safe Mode (no networking) and ran the full GMER scan to completion. Updated Malware Bytes and ran full scan (also while in safe mode no networking). After MB, I did a restart. However, my machine just sat there in the 'logging off windows' goodbye screen so I had to kill the computer with the power button. This has been happening fairly regularly lately (though, not always.) Finally, I ran the dds.scr program. It started up fine and seemed be running but the log files never came up for me to save. There were instructions about a script blocker - I don't know that I have one, much less how to disable it. So, that maybe a place that I missed. Which brings me to this moment - I just tried to launch IE7 and crashed on launch. No surprise, really. One last thing, I downloaded IE8, hoping that would fix my issue, but no dice. I uninstalled it and I'm back to IE7.
Your help is gratefully appreciated! Let me know if there is anything else I can describe or another log file I can post. I put a new HijackThis log at the end as well.
thank you!
Here are the log files.
