PING - Internet Explorer 5.0+

I use Windows 98, with 500mhz, a hard drive of 20G (with plenty of space), and 256K memory. I'm having an intermittent problem when using Internet Explorer. I connect using SBC DSL and am extremely impressed with the speed. However, too many times to count, I will click on a link (or type a URL in the address field) and nothing happens. No hour glass, no change of a cursor... nothing.

This has happened so many times that I now immediately go to Start | Run and type in the following command: ping yahoo.com. Immediately I see the old DOS window (blank). After about 20 to 30 seconds I finally see the results of my ping (replies).... then Internet Explorer will take me to my link or URL.

My Virus software is current. I have run AdWare, SpyBot, etc.... nothing detected. My cache is clean (which I know may slow things down, but not 20 to 30 seconds).

Suggestions? Is there a setting in IE that I should tinker with? Setting for the modem? I'm looking for suggestions.

Download 'Hijack This!'.HERE

Unzip (extract) it to a folder of its own.Like c:\HJT\hijackthis.exe , Then Doubleclick HijackThis.exe (in the new folder), and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, then Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. for hijackthis,most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.
