Trouble removing My Way Search Assistant

Hey everyone,

I've been trying to remove the Dell My Way Search Assistant from my computer. However, whenever I go to the control panel and add/remove programs, I got this error:

Error Loading C: PROGRA~1/MyWaySA/SrchAsDe/1.bin/desrcas.dll

Someone suggested that I run ccleaner to uninstall it, but I get the same exact error.

Is this a major problem? It's not a greatly needed dll for windows to run, it is? I just get a little paranoid about something going wrong since my last computer had to be fixed a lot do to stuff like this.

Anyone know how to fix this?

And while I'm at it, I may as well ask this too. My mom installed some Google programs by accident. I uninstalled them, and when the it finished, there was this empty system folder on my desktop. The name was something like 20%system20%. In it there were other folders, but there were no files. I deleted it and my computer is fine so far. Is it anything to fret over?

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).

Download HijackThis self-extracting zip version from here. Once downloaded, double click on the file & it will install into it's own, permanent folder.
Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

Can you please do the following.

Can you disable Windows Defender as it may interfere with the removal process. Please leave it disabled until your PC has been given the all clear.

• Open Windows Defender
• Click Tools
• Click General Settings
• Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
• Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
• After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
• Close Windows Defender

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

I searched for that file and I don't have it. Is that bad?

• Open Windows Defender
• Click Tools
• Click General Settings
• Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
• Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
• After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
• Close Windows Defender

Is there something seriously wrong with my computer? You're having me do all these things, and I am kinda starting to worry. It's not a major problem is, it?

Also, is the fact that the dll for uninstalling the My Way Search Assitant is missing a really bad thing? Or is this a common issue? It's not a major Windows file that's missing, right?

No, nothing major to worry about. I am just getting you to remove a few unnecessary entries :).
If you notice, most of the entries had (File Missing) after them.
I just want to see if there is a MyWay folder on your PC. We can then remove it, then remove the entry in add/remove if you wish?

Copy the bold text below and paste it into notepad. Save it to your desktop as find.bat and make sure type is set to All Files.

cd\
cd Program Files
DIR /AD /B /P > ProgramFiles.txt
start ProgramFiles.txt
cls
exit

Double click find.bat and let it run for a minute. It will open up a report in notepad. Please copy that text and post it here in your next reply.

Ok. Go into Program Files folder and delete the MyWaySA folder.
Create a Restore Point.
Click Start > Run > Type or copy & paste regedit. The registry editor will open.
Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete the MyWaySA entry in the right hand pane.

Reboot and check that the entry has gone from add/remove programs.

Also, I hear editing the registry is dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. Is it guaranteed that doing that won't cause any issues?

Also, do you think the reason why the dll woudln't load is because it was corrupted? I also forgot to mention that at the bottom of the unable to load error for it, it says "file cannot be found".

If you go to the Start | Help and Support section, you will find an option to create a system restore point. Just follow the prompts and you will be fine :).
It can be dangerous editing the registry and should not be attempted if unsure. That is why I alwaqys recommend setting a system restore point :).

I'm sorry to drag this further. I am a little hesitant to do that. I hate to say this now after we've did all of the other steps.

Is the missing dll a very important windows file? Say there is a time where my computer needs that file....will it go haywire?

Also, why do you think it's missing? Is it corrupted? I almost thought about reinstalling the My Way Search Assistant, then seeing if the file is there. But, I can't find a download for it.

If you want to leave it there, no problem :). I have to tell you though, that I have asked possibly hundreds of people to do what I have asked of you and so far, all has ended well :D.
I doubt very much that that dll file will be missed :).
