I'm having great difficulty removing a virus that creates a toolbar in my browser and creates false alerts that my computer is infected and must be cleaned. I've ran my McAfee Virus scan many times along with McAfee Quick Clean with no luck. While researching this site I've tried the smitfruadfix with much trouble since my pc freezes after clicking yes to running in safe mode instead of using a restore point. The only way to proceed is to select "run in safe mode with command prompt" then using cntrl-alt-dlt to get to "new task" and then start the smitfraudfix. I have to do this since all my icons are missing on the screen. This also usually happens when starting in normal mode, regular background but still no icons. And when I dbl click on IE the web page brings up a fake website claiming the cure. If I search for anything to do with "security toolbar 7.1" it brings up the page but unless I click stop immediately it brings up the "page cannot be displayed" with the address changed to "http://omgtheykilledkenny.omg.theykilledkenny.up4k.1111/". So it's very difficult to stay on daniweb, I will post on another computer to circumvent this.

On to the good stuff. This is after running smitefraudfix and selecting 2.

In advance I would like to thank you all for your knowlege and patience. I look forward to your Help. Nub.

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).

Please right click on hijackthis.exe and select rename and type in analysethis and hit the enter button.

==

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O3 - Toolbar: Security Toolbar - {11A69AE4-FBED-4832-A2BF-45AF82825583} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hxvcfcwc.dll

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hxvcfcwc.dll

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

==

Is that the only run you have done with Smitfraudfix?

Ok, I believe I've done all of the above correctly. I was able to delete the .dll file easily and can now enter safe mode easily as well.

The security bar is still there, and keeps coming back each time I run the scan, also on start up two icons on the desktop keep appearing. They're both IE shortcuts to some website. One is labled "Online security center" and the other "Live security"

And it's been about three tries with the smitfraudfix (two in normal mode, one in the difficult safe mode) none have been done after the .dll file was deleted. Thank you for such quick reply, was not expecting that. I await your advice.

Please download VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when
VundoFix appears at reboot.

Can you make sure that the hijackthis scan is in normal mode please.

Here is the vunofix log:

Thankyou again for your time and knowledge.

Still some vundo files lying around there.

1. Download this file from one of the following links :

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/combofix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply, along with a new hijackthis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

I did the above instructions and got to where combofix asked to reboot. While restarting the blue screen of death appeared and said the following.

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

INVALID_KERNEL_HANDLE

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart you computer. If this screen appers again, follow thise steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

Things appear to be back to normal, but this isn't the first time I've received the "blue screen of death". So I'm concerned that I might have some permanent or ongoing damage still on the computer. If I'm playing games or just on the computer for a significant amount of time, eventually another blue screen comes up.

I can't tell you what all you help means to me. I would be lost without this comunity. And personally I'd like to say thank you Crunchie.

You are welcome :).

Hope this helps.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text (including the 'Files to delete') contained in the code box below to your clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Ctrl+C:

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kgorwsvu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\grtvdjor.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\eglbgpki.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\krjuohbm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\egmuuxtn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mlboxueh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\afipelby.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qduoterc.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Here is the Avenger.txt:

Things appear to be great. Just a quick question. Are the steps just removing more spyware/malware or are they for fixing my "blue screen of death" problem or probably both?

Things appear to be great. Just a quick question. Are the steps just removing more spyware/malware or are they for fixing my "blue screen of death" problem or probably both?

Nubby

Hopefully a benefit of removing the malware will be a decrease in the number of BSOD's. Sometimes just removing the malware does not fix the problem as system files sometimes get corrupted.

Your pc seems to be clean according to that log.

Go to system properties (right click MyComputer > properties) > Advanced tab > under startup and recovery click settings > under System failure make sure "Write an event to the system log" is checked AND that "Automatically restart" is UNchecked. Then under *write debugging info* select (none) > Click "OK" and reboot.

If you crash again, write down the entire STOP message.
You can post it here for help, or in the XP forum.

Thankyou sooooooo much. I do have one more question, it's really fust for curiosity. Why is it that my "PAID" subscription to McAfee could not recognize this situation. But these other free sites were able to get the job done.

Thankyou daniweb and crunchie for a job well done!!!

Maybe that's a question you should put to McAfee :). Any AV is only as good as it's definitions updates. Also, they usually do not catch many trojans as they are aimed more at Virus'.
IMO McAfee is not much better than Norton and not worth the money. I use a free AV and a free firewall and have zero problems. I also do not use Internet Explorer :D.
