Multiple internet browser windows open by themselves

Hello;

I recently started having a problem on my Dell E1505 laptop running Windows XP-SP3, where multiple internet browser windows start opening by themselves ramdomly. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm using IE8, Firefox or AOL Browser, the problem keeps happening. There are times where it won't happen for several hours or for a whole day but after I shut down and reboot, it starts again. I'm running Trend Micro Internet Security 2010 and it does not report any viruses or problems. I also downloaded and ran MalwareBytes AntiMalware and it didn't show any problems. I haven't tried Ad-Aware or Spysweeper yet but I did download HiJackThis Ver-2.02 and the log from this mornings execution I ran after booting up my laptop is attached below. I have tried to reset IE8 back to default settings with no change in the problem. Please help.

no matter which web browser you use eg.Firefox,AOL or IE8?

Please give your specifications,which OS(Operating System) and NIC Card are you using? Is it a laptop or desktop computer?

How are you connected to internet?If you are accessing internet using ethernet
cable,then just disable your Local Area Network Connection icon in your computer
and then wait for some times and see if your computer still faces the same problem.
If still multiple web browsers open up in your computer after disabling LAN connection,please let us know.

Hi Frank....My original post shows I'm using a Dell Laptop and using Windows XP-SP3. I connect to the internet wirelessly to a AT&T 2-Wire Modem/Router Combo. No one else in my family that connects the same way I do to the internet is having the same problem. The wireless card my laptop has is a Intel 3945 I believe. My local Ethernet port on my laptop is currently disabled. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Sounds like malware of some sort to me. You say you have Trend Internet Security: does this have up-to-date signatures? If not, you could do worse than try AVG's Anti-Virus which is free for non-commercial use. De-install Trend first before installing AVG. A word of caution: some malware can prevent successful installation or updates of AV software. The way round this is to take your laptop's HDD out and put it in a USB caddy. Then connect this to a known good PC with up-to-date AV in order to dis-infect it. CAUTION: there is a small chance this could break your Windows installation so before you do this, make sure you backup all your files. And check you have means to re-install Windows if need be! In fact, after doing the data backup, it's worth checking the backup storage media on a know good PC - to see if the malware is trying to spread that way. Might give you a pointer as to what the malware is and there may be a "stinger" available to kill it. Most AV vendors offer stingers FoC for many common malwares.
Lavasoft's AdAware (as you mentioned) is definitely worth a try before all this, though.

Hello all: I have now downloaded, installed and run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy and deleted a lot of stuff but my problem still exists with only IE8 and Firefox 3.6. My old AOL Explorer is working fine with no sign of this problem. I always make sure I have the most up to date virus signature files for Trend Micro Internet Security 2010 and I have it set to download an update every 3 hours. I've also downloaded and installed Trend Micro Browser Guard Ver. 2.0.1072. So where do I go from here?

Normally, akamai is benign, but that dll can be related to it.
I would remove Viewpoint, although once again I have no issue with it. Unwanted ActiveX add-ons can be removed via IE, Manage Add-ons.
I see that you once used Symantec AV. You should run their removal tool to uninstall all traces of it : http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Remove this service: Office Source Engine (ose) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Source Engine\OSE.EXE (file missing)
- check first that the file really is missing [it is required to repair/reinstall Office]. Anyway....
- to do it, go Start, run, type services.msc -and press Enter. Maximise the window and at foot select Extended tab, scroll to the specific service, rclick it, select properties. Write down the exact Service Name. Press Stop if it is highlighted [you may have to set the service Startup type to Disable first]. Close Services, now type this line into the run text box and press Enter:
sc delete "exact Service Name" - don't be silly now....
Use hijackthis to remove this null entry:
O2 - BHO: IEGBH0 - {9F3209E2-334B-41E9-B09C-703F398742E7} - no file || it is from TM.

-ensure that it is set to update and start, else start it via the icon, and UPDATE it.
Select "Perform QUICK Scan", then click Scan; the application will guide you through the remaining steps.
ENSURE that EVERYTHING found has a CHECKMARK against it, then click Remove Selected.
If malware has been found [and removed] MBAM will automatically produce a log for you when it completes... do not click the Save Logfile button.
Examine the log: if some files are listed as Delete on Reboot then restart your machine before continuing.
Copy and post that log [it is also saved under Logs tab in MBAM].
