Yes, it is. A prayer doesn't require a sacrifice. The last sacrifice required by Christianity was called in ~2k years ago.

i think that the point is that in both cases, praying and sacrificing, the guy hope that a god would intervene where someone else might prefer a good clutch and brake specialist or electronics technician.

Whoever the dudes in the south (basra) are

i think that most in the south are shiite. i am not sure though. i am going to check. but if most of the people in the south said just that then america did open up a can of worms. lets hope that they can close it again.

but as i said. why are the iraqi people killing each other just because of religious differences of opinion? the prophet died hundreds of years ago.

quintoncoert 131 Posting Whiz in Training

I know people who have served there. The iraqis themseleves think it was better under sadamm

yes but who thinks so and why.

is it the minority in the central regions?(sunnis i think). because under their leader, sadam, they ruled iraq and commited all kinds of atrocities on the kurds and the other moslem brand(shiite i think)

if it is the shiite and the kurds who think that then america has opened up a can of worms and it is going to be interesting to see how they are going to close it!

why do they think that. do they think that the slow, silent but persistent persecution of the dictator is preferable to a civil war?

if that is so then it is only up to themselves. nobody said that they should kill each other.

look carefully and you will see that mostly they target each other. far more civilians rather than american or brittish troops get hit by suicide bombers.

i think that it is pretty stupid to kill the guy next door just because you could not agree who the prophet's heir should be.

hi.

i am looking for a free web hosting service. i did search daniweb archives for people who asked similar questions but some of the sites mentioned seem to no longer work while others are just plain unsuitable.

i am planning on developing a website which keeps track of Daniweb chess players results in a round robin tournament. it should make allowance for the following.

it should be free. like in really and totally free. i dont care about how many adds the owners would like to place just as long as it is free.

it should support some type of database. preferably ms access. but if that is not possible then some other database which i can download for free. if all else fail then i can store the tables in a file but can one put a file on a web hosting server and then access it?(sorry if this question seem silly but i am new to web development.)

it should also support javascript and php. the javascript is to make the screens interactive and the php to access the database. these are not cast in stone and i can adapt to other technologies. i just need a way to interact with data stored on the server and a way to make the screens come alive.

quintoncoert 131 Posting Whiz in Training

OK i too like that. then we have three (or four if some one wants to add one more event) events a year or whatever period we decide on.

one is the elimination type tournament we already had. the other is the ranking table ladder system as to what sk8ndestroy wanted. and the last one is the round robin tournament.

now about the ladder system. let me see if i have this right. correct me if i am wrong.

we go to yahoo. we create our own game room. we each create one new yahoo id with DW as a prefix. then we play one another as we please.

in the mean time i shall start to work on something for the round robin tournament. i am reasonably sure that i will come up with something good.

but hosting is going to be a real problem so i am going to have to impose on someone to help out with that. or i am going to think. perhaps i can find a way which makes hosting not compulsory.

you apear to be right about the amount of points lost and won. but it is still not very clear. there still seems to be something convoluted about the points awarding system.

nevertheless i concede the point. i spoke too soon. but that still leaves the problem of those who might want to dodge stronger players. i still think a round robin tournament where everyone plays everyone twice with yahoo's points system is best.

quintoncoert 131 Posting Whiz in Training

I've explained like five times why that doesn't work. That's more a measure of how many games you've played than of how good you are. You need to lose points when you lose the game and yahoo's system is the most appropriate one.

really? how can it be a reflection of how many games you play if everyone plays the same number of games?

and why is losing points so important? if you lose a game and get no points you will still be forced down the log by those who win and draw games. those who draw will be in the middle and those who win will be at the top. what more can be required?

but if losing points is so important then why not do the round robin with yahoo point system. that way serunsen gets his wish. i get mine in that no one can dodge or ask his buddy for help. you get your wishes, the losing of points plus no "reflection of how many games you have played". and nichito has suggested this already so he will probably agree.

I just want everybody to have the exact same chance. That is why i want every one to play everyone else twice. to play white is an advantage. black first have to equalize the position before he can attack. by plaing everyone as both colours things are one hundred percent fair.

quintoncoert 131 Posting Whiz in Training

@ sk8ndestroy

the only problem with your system is that it is going to be easy for people to abuse it by forming clicks.

if a group of people decides to team up and then they only play one another and nobody else then they are going to benefit. This will mean that the more games they play against one another the higher their rankings are going to be.

This is because yahoo's reward for winning far outweights it punishment for losing. The amount of points one gets for winning far exceeds the amount of points one drops when one loses.

This will favour any group of people when they form clicks. By playing one another many times over in their click they build up one another's points.

Sure they may agree to play the others now and then but even if they lose it wont matter since they can always go back and rebuild their ranking after a loss to someone outside their team.

That is why I am in favour of force and limit. You just have to play everyone. And you can only play any one person twice.

This way people will be discouraged from teaming up as it they would not gain as much from just two games against each other as they would from say a hundred games.

The whole problem is the way yahoo punish and reward defeat and victory. Your idea would have been good …

>And like with radical Islam, the fact that the decent majority doesn't speak out against the excesses (in fact often seems to defend them through special interest groups) does nothing to soften that image.

they dont speak out because for them it would be akin to betrayal. it is like some kind of brotherhood.

i have this one moslem friend. her cousin is a reasonably good small business person. but the easiest way for you to get a job from him is to be family. that means brother or cousin or something like that. otherwise you still have a decent chance if you happened to be married into the family.

you see it is not that the majority wants to be silent. it is that the majority see them as brothers. this does not mean that the majority agrees. it does not nescesarily mean that the majority disagrees either. what it means is that they tend(in my somewhat limited experience with them) to believe in standing together and not publically speak out against each other.

of course they are still human and their societies are subject to the same pressures that can fracture our societies. but you are not going to fracture them easily by saying: "see? look what your brother did. it is wrong." this is because "brother" tends to have a higher order of precedence than "wrong".

so the fact that they dont speak out has more to do with culture and believes …

On yahoo, you can easily look at statistics of games completed, games won and games lost. We will all post on here the games played and the results. This way it would be very easy to see if someone played anyone outside of Daniweb. And by the way I don't like the 3 for win 1 for draw 0 for loss thing because that ranking system really only ranks how many games you've played rather than how good you are. And loopholes can be made like finding a buddy and continuously drawing. Or saying, you win this one and let me win the next and that way they both get three points. It's a bad system. And with yahoo's ranking system points earned or lost is due to your opponent's and your current rank, which I think is very fair.

> finding a buddy and drawing.

that is exactly why i want us to use that system. remember. i also proposed that everyone play everyone else only twice. once as white and once as black. if you agree to draw both games against your buddy you come out with two points while if you had won you would have came out with six.

even if you look at both then the two draws would get them only a four when taken together but when they had won it would be a total for six points.

this would discourage draws. everyone knows that both people lose more than …

your english is very unclear. i do not understand you.

if i guess correctly. you have one word. and in that word you have to find another.

the best that i can think of is if you put the first word in a character array. and then you loop through the array. when you find the first letter of the word you are searching for you check to see if the next letter in the first word is equal to the next letter in the word you are looking for. and so on. if you find all the letter like that then you have the word. but if you dont find all the letters all, the one after the other, then only part of the word is there.

reply as to whether this is clear or not. and if this is not what you are looking for then please repeat yourself more clearly.

the computers they work with still have their normal keyboards. they are just added to the computer. and as i said. they raise events which special software listens for.

quintoncoert 131 Posting Whiz in Training

this device is an embedded computer which can be programmed(windows CE). can i write a computer program(most likely in C) wich would receive the input on one of its ports and output it again on one of its other ports which can then serve as input for one of the computers.

i have written some rough pseudo code. would you guys mind taking a look at it and say if it possible or not?

create four variables / most likely pointers
link each of them to one port on the device

write that input onto another variable so that it can go to a second port and to a computer

then there are the lines themselves

are the lines known at compile time or are they supplied at run time.

also are they straight lines or curves(quadratic equations) . (i.e. y = mx + c or y = ax2 + bx + c ).

also if these equations is of a order higher than quadratic then i would have some difficulty working with them. even if i could work with them i would have difficulty translating a line of this type into an algebraic equation of this type.

also does the lines have an interval. i mean do these lines have an end and a beginning?

- conservationist and preservationist

i have no idea what the difference is. i did not even know that we could be divided up like that.

let me see if i deduce correctly. preservationists wants to maintain the old way of doing things because they believe that progress harms the earth. conservationists just wants people to stop harming the earth if there is no need to.

who are you talking about? me or lasher or josch. if you are talking about me then i can only say that i am speaking the truth.

an ecosystem is an area where living and non-living things co-exists. in fact that is what ecology is. it is a study of an organism where he occurs naturally and it studies his interaction with both the living and non living element of his environment.

when an organism no longer fits in with either living or non elements he dies because he cannot find food, shelter or sexual partners.

let me give you an example. up to 2.4 billion years ago most life forms on earth used no oxygen. so when green algae and bacteria flooded the atmosphere with oxygen they all died.

one can still find some of those primitive life forms on earth today. they are usualy very deep under the earth's ocean where they live from the heat of the earth's mantle or core or something(sorry. not sure just now.) and where there is no oxygen. as soon as they are brought to the surface where oxygen is abundent, they die.

we adapt it so that anyone can join at any time but of course we post a time frame as well. no one is allowed to join in the last month or so of the timeframe since he will have to play every one else in that short period of time.

or else we do cycles. a new cycle starts every four months. anyone can join at any time. in the short run late joiners who cant finish all of their games will cause the rankings to be a bit erratic but in the long run things aught to smooth out. anyone who dont finish all of his games in …

in cricket tests, which is to long to hold world cups for, the rules are simple. teams are placed in a group and are obliged to play each other so many times during such a period.

that way the teams can decide for themselves when they play as long as they play all their alloted opponents during the specified time.

But they didn't really create lasting jobs. They used slave labor in the prison camps to generate the money to hire others.

not all. i dont know how far your statement was true. it was certainly true during the war.

but even before the war started hitler set out on campaigns of public works. for example many unemployed were set to work with the clearing of forests.

germany's economy was under severe strain because of the treaty of versailes. inflation was a nightmare(strange during a depression.) but the public works was the one thing the national socialists did right that the rest of europe did not follow.

many people believe that government spending to ease a recession does at least as much harm as it does good. they say the same for taxation when the economy overstrain itself.

but this is a controversial issue. it is certainly not a good idea to resort to it for each and every minor problem. if i had been the minister of finance of any country i would only employ it during a real and serious recession. but i dont know if i would tax or spend less in order to ease inflation. there i simply dont know enough. i mean. would the higher inflation not increase the economy's ability to produce? (i.e. shift the long run aggregate supply curve to the right)

would it be one? the others are met. they could have been met there or even if they were met along the way nothig says that they are going with?

@ enderx

i am sorry but you will have to be more specific. what exactly did the government do to make the recession worse? unless the government set out on a large campaign of public works then you are only proving our point which is that the great depression could have been less severe had the american government created jobs on a large scale by public works.

also i do not understand what you mean by "on paper" and precisely what is paper earnings.

you are also contradicting yourself. how can recovery begin when unemployment skyrocket? should it not be the other way around? that unemployment decreased or at the least leveled off when the recovery began?

and by the way. that is a common misconception. recovery began (although was not there completely yet) actually before america became actively involved with the war. check statstics which shows GDP and unemployment rate of america.

if anything the war put a strain on the american economy. by the time the war ened you could sell american consumers almost anything because they have been deprived of consumer goods.

and had the depression really ended with the start of the war then it would only strengthen my case since now government had been creating jobs by engaging industry to produce for the war effort.

as it was the war actually only finished off the great depression but then overstrained the american economy.

just a quick thought. if frmNew is modal and you then hide it is it still modal? because if frmNew remains modal after being hidden you wont be able to use any other form.

if possible you will at least have to unmake its modalarity before hiding it and loading the new one.

btw. it is not a good idea to load and hide many forms. this all remains in memory and slows your pc down.

quintoncoert 131 Posting Whiz in Training

just a rough guess. cant you just say the following for the very first item added to the combobox?

combobox.additem " Select "

you execute this command in the load event procedure of the form. before you add anything else to the combobox.

>Why do they make computers harder to use and program than they need to be? Here >are some >examples:

>- Why do most spreadsheets and programming languages do trigonometric functions >:in radians, >when most people use degrees?

Because these things have been designed by geniuses for geniuses. I guess it is a classical case of if you are not with us then you must be against us!

>- Why do most of the C-based languages (including Java, JavaScript, and Perl) have >two different >syntax forms to call functions with, depending on which function you want?

Same as the above

>- Why does Microsoft change the name of everything from what others called it before >(a >"directory" suddenly became a "folder", and a "procedure" became a "method").

To facilitate stealing. Let me give a practical example. If you make a programming called java which runs byte-code on virtual machine then I cant just steal it from you and sell it as it is? No at the very least I have to change its name. so java becomes C#, byte-code become IL, and Java virtual machine becomes CLR. The functioning does not have to differ just as long as the name is different. Now you cant take me to court so easily.

>- In the 1980s, kids all over were programming computers. With the change to >Windows, this >suddenly stopped, as Microsoft made programming a lot harder to do. >Why?

Who knows …

@ midimagic

lasting or non lasting jobs are not the point. the point is that if an economy is in recession then goverment spending is the most effective way of ending that reccesion.

consumers do not spend much money during a reccesion. that is the whole crux of a reccesion. because consumers stop buying the demad for goods and services falls. this leads to unemployment. because the now unemployed people does not have as much money to buy other sectors of the economy dont sell much either and this leads to further job losses.

these things actually happened in history. the best example is the great american deppresion of around the 1930 years.

the same thing happend around the same time in europe. only hitler' national socialists actually provided jobs and germany got pulled out of reccesion before almost all other europian countries.

guys we are hijacking nichito's thread again. perhaps we should create a new thread in which to discuss this topic. the same goes for homosexuality. there is a new thread already for that. it is the "lets talk about it...." thread.

I've heard about it but have never seen it played. It appears to be a simple form of American Football, minus all the body protection. Ouch!

haha. hilarious! i would say that american football is the simplified form. i also believa that ours is tougher! we cant tackle the other guy without the ball but then again we do not use body armour.

@ josch

yes they have.

america is an interesting country. rugby does not make as much money as soccer or your american sports so you guys are probably not that interested in it.

in new zealand it is a national sports and in south africa and australia it is as good as a national sport.

but if america really wants to it can probably create a competent team in less than a decade.
