well thanks then
i think i will go for a reinstall
by the way i was looking for a little advise on how to get a job done quickly on formatting a new computer and installing all the necessary software. i usually take 2 and half to 3 hours on doing that. Am i slow or is this the average time?

For Win XP and apps that sounds about right. It takes a bit longer (than restoring a ghost image) but with new hardware I think you'll find the end result is worth it.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+use+norton+ghost

You'll get better results if you enter which version of Ghost you are using.

My two cents...Using an old disk image on new hardware is going to give you grief. You're better off doing a clean installation on the new hardware and then migrating your files/info to the new system. You'll need to reinstall your applications too. It may seem like more work but I'm sure you'll have less headaches.

Welcome to Daniweb Huggie. Can you post more details please ? System specs, have you scanned for nasties?, have you tried the 'Run' command or launching directly from the program's executable? (rather than just double clicking on a shortcut), do existing programs work normally, etc.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

If their server's issue is with Windows 7 64-bit I don't see how changing web browsers would help. If your hardware supports virtualization you could try XP Mode.

spoolsv.exe is Window's print spooler service which handles print and fax jobs.

If you think you have a virus use an antivirus software to scan your system.

I presume that the folders 'jre1.60_...' are previous versions. Can I delete these? It seems so but I'd like to be sure ;)

Thanks

Mark

I wouldn't recommend deleting any program files/folders directly, but if you want to clean them up use Add/Remove Programs (or Programs and Features if vista/7 ) and uninstall the java updates(except for the latest of course). I've done this before and it will remove those folders and leave the latest installation of java intact.

I would just reload from the backup disks. This time create your account first and once you've logged on you can create your daughter's account as a standard user without affecting your account.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Do you have an upgrade version of 7 ? Did you do a clean install ?

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Try going to Tools(in Firefox) > Options> Content tab; At the bottom you should see Languages, click on the 'Choose' button and select French and Remove.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Try installing a different application(other than Adobe) to open PDF's
like Foxit Reader.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Check Tools>Options; Advanced tab; click Config Editor.. button; filter for 'sound' and ensure that mail.biff.play_sound is 'false'.

If so, my guess is that your profile is corrupt. Maybe try backing it up (browse to C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\ on Windows XP/2000 or C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\ on Windows Vista) ; you could simply move the profile (make sure Thunderbird is closed) and on the next launch when a profile is not found a new one is created and you can try a fresh start.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

I disable them all(except antivirus) and if I notice that any would be useful I re-enable them. Most just load part of the program to speed up its launch when you do use it.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Try using ccleaner; under the Tools you can easily(and safely) disable any of the programs running at Startup. It's also handy for cleaning up temp files, etc.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Just double click on the top border of the task manager window.

You're in 'tiny footprint mode'; you got there by double clicking in the space above the tabs.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Once you've booted from the HDD, what happens when you run setup off the CD ? Maybe the problem is your CD drive hardware ?

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

The cd only has the files necessary to install XP; the license is on a label attached to the computer case(or bottom of a laptop). I'm guessing both computers are from the same manufacturer and this is why the one disk worked for both. For example, a Dell disk wouldn't work on an HP and vice versa.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

The BIOS settings of your new motherboard are probably not the same as the old one. Try this: Enter setup and disable Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI), save and reboot.

Why not let Windows handle the virtual memory?

Go to Control Panel>System>Advanced tab>under Performance, click Settings>Advanced tab>under Virtual Memory, click Change>select System Managed Size and click Set>click OK and Restart the computer when prompted to do so.

If you wish to keep the Custom virtual memory settings, set the Min to 768 and Max to 1536.

I had similar issues with a Dell. Boot from the Vista disk and use System restore to just before it tried to update. Once you get it running go to Dell's site and download/install the latest drivers for your Inspiron. Windows Update should be fine after that.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

You must be an administrator to install the service pack.

You could try downloading the entire package from Microsoft and installing from that, instead of relying on downloading during the installation.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

1. IF Dell allows you to turn off the splash screen it would be done in the BIOS Setup. I think you can do it while booting using the Esc key; you'll see the usual bios stuff like testing memory, checking/discovering drives, etc.

2. Use the Startup Manager in Ubuntu to change the default OS.

Your school's IT administrators have prevented you from accessing the site. If you are allowed to download at all from their computers then use software like Save2PC at home and download the video to your home computer. Find an online storage service(I use Yahoo briefcase(100MB) that came with my yahoo.ca webmail account) and download it that way. Another option, if the downloaded video file is small enough, you might be able to email it to your teacher at the school.

The ultimate disk will work fine. The product key is what determines which version of vista is installed. I know this for a fact as the notebooks we received for work have vista business license stickers on them but our corporate it group installed win xp on them. I bought a notebook drive and swapped it with the company's drive; installed vista business with my vista ultimate disk I have for my home desktop. Worked perfectly.

From the first screen shot it looks like you are running Parallels on an OS X Mac. I don't know much about virtual pc software for Mac but if it will allow you to install Service Pack 1 for Vista the media player will be upgraded to version 11.0.6001.7000

Try re-installing Outlook.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

A single ntfs partition is fine. That small partition isn't necessary.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

If your BIOS setup includes your cd/dvd rom as a boot device it will boot from the windows disk and start the install.

If your bios does not support booting from cd you can download files from microsoft to create a set of bootable floppy disks.

Very strange. Maybe try sending an email to live mail support at live.com?

Have you verified your settings or tried the gmail troubleshooter ?

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Try this...Create a new folder on your computer's hard drive and then copy the contents of the CD to that folder; now run the setup from the hard drive location.

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Did you go to their link to delete excite cookies and try logging in again ?

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Definitely Vista drivers. Uninstall the two audio entries you have in Device Manager. Then all i can offer is try one of the 2 you found; if it doesn't work uninstall it and try the other. Good luck...

According to the Microstar MS-7046 Manual your sound is from a CMedia Azelia integrated controller.

Try loking for drivers at Microstar or CMedia.

It means it is a network printer.

i.e. the printer is not attached to the local machine but is being shared on the network by some manner of print server(might be built into print or could be another computer)

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

Go to Run and enter control userpasswords2 , hit Enter and uncheck the box beside 'Users must enter a username and password to use this computer'

I have a network share that I have accessed as one user. I want to access another network share as another user. When I try to access the second drive it does not ask for my UN/PW it only tells me access denied.

I need to know how to make windows ask for the UN/PW so I can enter the correct permission information.

Open Windows Explorer, click on Tools then select map network drive. Enter the path to the network share (\\servername\sharename)
Click Connect using different user name. Uncheck Reconnect at logon if you don't want the connection to be permanent.

Has anyone successfully installed Acrobat Reader? It downloads ok, uncompresses, then gives the error message "The Temp folder is on a drive that is full or is inaccessible. ...". I used command prompt to display the values of all environment variables and the TEMP is in d:\users\<full path here>.

Anyone know a solution to this problem?

Thanks

I've installed it without any probs.

Check this out.

I had a similar issue with a Samsung laser printer. Point and print didn't work, I had to manually add the printer on each workstation; add a local port using the unc path (\\server name\printer share name) and use 'Have disk' and the driver CD.

Worth a shot!?

Check that all your system fans are working, especially in power supply and on CPU.

Is the Guest account enabled on the desktop?

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

To turn off the automatic reboot, go to Control Panel, System. Click on the Advanced tab, and under Startup and Recovery click on the Settings button. Uncheck Automatically restart under System Failure. The next time you have a problem you should see a blue screen. Report back the first few lines.

Your MB Page at MSI Definitely not the easiest site to navigate!

Could you tell me where on MSI you found the driver. I loaded XP on my PC and it can't find my sound driver. I have the same motherboard. I went to MSI, but all my searches couldn't find the model. I also went to driverguide.com and my searches all directed me to MSI's site. Please help, I am feeling completely illiterate!!!! Thanks

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

That's what i'd try.

According to Canon's support site you should run the Uninstall from Start, All Programs, Canon folder and not Add/Remove programs. Of course you'll have to reinstall to do this. If that still doesn't work try emptying the folder first' or Shift + Delete (bypasses the Recycle Bin).

Laser 84 Posting Whiz

The proper way would be to install 98 first and then XP; however it is possible to load 98 on an existing XP install if the c drive is formatted fat or fat32, not ntfs. There are instructions at DougKnox.com.
Just do a search for installing 98 after XP.

It sounds to me like something else came loose when you removed the modem card. Double check all your cables and reseat the video card for starters.

Have a look at Microsoft's Knowledgebase Article #272347

It doesn't appear to include your exact error message but it gives you a place to start.
