on vista theres a network map under control panel. To get XP clients to show in it you have to download a driver from microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120 worked for me, showed all my clients + UpNP devices like router and NAS

Yes,do as jonman68 says and DO NOT download the thing that it asks you to. That warning is a virus and will install more if you run it.

Does it power on when on wall power? If so your battery may have expired - they have a life of 1-5 years

no, the dells that dont have disks usually have a recovery partition. hit control + f11 repeatedly when the system is starting up . THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING!
Hmmm, sense of humour and Gordon Brown? Nope, don't think there is any danger of the two meeting up at any point.
Yeah i agree :) I find it hilarious that the UN made Tony Blair in charge of Middle East peace. The middle east hate him.

get a windows 2000 cd and boot into recovery console (i think 2k has it, xp does) also you might not have to do a full reinstall, a repair reinstall might do speak to him first.

Opensuse and Fedora generally tend to be slow. I like debian, if you a network connection via ethernet, just dowwnload the <200mb netinstall image and it will download what you need (choose desktop + base system) debian is nice and fast, and if youve used ubuntu before, should be familiar …

for a domain controller do "apt-get update" then "apt-get install samba". This will download SAMBA for windows network integration. Then just change smb.conf (in /etc some where) - its got a lot of comments so you can set up a DC quite easialy.

Antec is the best one out of the ones you have mentioned. Thermaltake is also good If you are getting one with a PSU you want a power supply unit NO LOWER than 500w .750 is overkill. 550-650 is good if you want to run current graphics cards etc.... , …

be careful. dells have crap power supplies (which you cant replace) so you probably cant put anything better in - also the dells cases are crap design (cant be replaced either) so those "fat" cards wont fit
