yes, caperjack is correct, all RAM should underclock to the lowest stick of RAM in a config, but keep in mind that it will then generally disable dual channel benefits. But usually, that's no biggie unless you are a top-end user, and if you were you'd be buying 4x matched RAM sticks.

just my 2 cents worth.

I got another, similar one from http://www.daniweb.com/members/itmind7/927895

Dear Sir Can you give me your yahoo Email ID. so i can add you on my friend list

It just seems PHISHY to me.

I would also like to note, that I was only notified of the post by email today, 6th feb 2012. The PMs are dated Dec 11 2011.

Something funny, there. Obviously, this thread is only 50 minutes old (at time of posting). So the dates on the PM's are weird.

I Just wanted to say the same thing. I didn't realise that was that icon's purpose - could it possible have aTextual Tag added to it, so we know what it's for in the future?

I was coming here to post the EXACT same thing, on the same spammer - but thank you for the ino, Davey.

That's a good photo, BTW,

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I didn't think about it, but CJ is right. I have seen some huge screwups, especially with "fix you computer automatically" software like CCleaner, RegCleanNow, GlarySoft, etc. in fact, there is a thread dedicated to ripping them somewhere in the geeks lounge.

A couple of little recommends though:
some of my clients quite like the folowwing bits of software:
iobit (only use the defrag and gamebooster utils, and I haven't looked at any of the other tools for a while, because they were in early dev at the time, and not very good. Maybe worth a revisit now. I use ESET SS for my AV products, yes I am affiliated with ESET as a Qualified Vendor, Reseller, and Certified Admin/Deployment. But only because I believe in the product. Just to clear up any confusion.)
Stardock's Fences

As far as messing with a PC is concerned, if you wanted to be really safe, you could always give it a go in a Virtual Machine like Virtualbox or Windows VPC (by M$) to test it first, before implementing it in the real world.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Yeah I noticed that too, after posting. It was too late to come back and edit the post.

Caperjack, that is an interesting post for you. It seems rushed, disjointed. your posts are usually so well structured.

I have this horrible feeling that you may not be able to.

the best that I personally would be doing now, in your situation, is looking into
http://www.easeus-deletedrecovery.com/download.html

and read this:
http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/help/pre-install.htm

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Everyone has an explanation, but no one has a solution.

The answer to this is:
Number 1. STOP USING THE COMPUTER
If the file is Just 'deleted', then it is still on the computer, it is just "floating in space" - you computer has cut it loose and is not keeping a track Of where it put it any more, but it may still be on the hard drive. There is software out there that can physically scan the HDD to look for these Kinds of files.

the best one that I have found is:
Easeus Dedeted File Recovery
http://www.easeus-deletedrecovery.com/

Step NUMBER TWO

Download this from another computer
http://www.easeus-deletedrecovery.com/
load it onto / install it and run it from a flash drive.

save any recovered files to anything except the HDD that you are trying to recover.

that's your last best hope. If that doesn't do it, then

Step NUMBER THREE
http://www.easeus-deletedrecovery.com/download.html
their full disk recovery product might, and if that doesn't then you have already overwritten it.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Cool. looks like "The New Normal" was closer than me this time. how about you mark it as solved, and it will come off the ...to solve list in the forum? cheers :-)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Sorry. web timed out on me, had to recover all this fromm my keylogger.. hopefully I recomplie it in the right order...

the boot loop is caused (usually) by windows booting onto a motherboard other than the one it was installed on. so your mobo is probably fine.

slow detection times in HDD are caused, 99% of the time, by...
Power surges.
I bet you don't have spike protection on your PC , Modem, and ethernet lines, do you? monitor, router,
you can check this by booting from that HDD, hitting F8 repeatedly.

(some mobo use F8 for their boot menu so if you get a device menu, exit out and continue, hitting F8 again)
you should get a list starting with "safe mode." go down to "disable system restart on system failure."
it should boot through and end up in a blue screen of death. this is fine. it means your mobo is good, and windows is booting off the HDD, but the device crivers a very wrond good bootable etc. (HDD is in wrong PC )

back up that bad hdd before it fails completely. A disk imaging program would be the best.Daniweb is pushing Acronis TrueImage. It is probably good if Dani puts her name behind it, but I have never used it. So I cannot offer an opinion. or just use XCOPY command. but DO NOT use normal windows copy, it will stop on the …

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

one is to go:

my computer, rclick on the offending drive (usually C:\)
properties-tools-check my disk for problems
tick both boxes, hit OK.

it should say it will do it on a reboot... hit okokok.
reboot, go make a coffee.

If that no go, then something is wrong with chkdsk.
hmmm.

The same thing can be achieved by running the guided help thingee by microsoft, here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

If that is the case, then Tere be Drakons inst thy PC...
so BACK EVERYTHING UP!!!! NOW.

there is a good tutorial on this proceedure, plus making a bootable floppy for the job (you might be able to do this with a CD if you understand the command line they have used.) and also how to do it using a genuine winXP install disk+ recovery console.

hope it helps...

PRIMO.

Please "mark this thread as solved" so that others will know what worked for you - and if you do it when mine is the last comment, then I get the credit - just so someone else doesn't poach my goodie points for helping you - thanxx

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

you have the cd? DO THIS:

boot from the cd
hit install windows
(dont touch recovery console)
agree (f8)
select your harddrive with windows on it
your cd will find your current version of windows
hit repair. wait an hour. or two.

i suggest a back up first. and set a restore point. this will fix any corrupt WINDOWS files WITHOUT deleting or overwriting any of your crap. it even leaves the registry intact except for critical stuff. so you will have windows again. that is the easy fix. really really.

in fact, before you do that do this

in windows
start-my computer
right click your windows HDD
select properties
select the tools tab
select check for errors
tick both boxes
ok
schedule on restart
ok
ok
then restart your pc. chkdsk should kick in for an hour or so. if not, do it again coz sometimes it does the funky monkey i dont know why.

then look for H+S

that might fix it. if not then run the repair as above.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

the small red x suggests frames or images might be disabled, but i can't remember how to fix it. and i am too damn tired. maybe someone else remebers? it can be done in gpedit but i can't remember where. ssrr - you running home or pro? no gpedit in home standard? i think. i usually hack it into home installs/ not illegal! theres no law saying you cant add to xp - only that you cant r-e it.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

(general comment- chrome has heaps of compatibility issues. I love the idea of the browser, but it is crap. sorry. use your other browser as the default and it should render ok.)

guys trying to help:I dont think he means on line help. he means inside XP, on the start menu - is this correct, "ssrr" ... ?

Has is always done this? is this pc new to you? if it was a custom build, then H+S might have never been installed to make xp lighter. or more likely you have a virus issue. run malwarebytes.org first, then run system restore if that doesn't fix it. ask if you don't understand.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

looking back, yes, that is how it seems. I did mean to reply to that post. but I didn't realise how badly we poached the thread.

CaperJack:
PM me when you start the new thread.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

solution? maybe. but not an easy one.

SYS restore for D: might be monitored, but maybe not on C:

In other words, D: might have SR enabled on both drives (therefore effecively backing up a copy of c to itself - not accurate, but will do for purpses of explanation)

but if C: does not have it enabled, then it has not been monitoring backups for itself.

One quick thought,

turn off pc
turn on, hitting F8

use "last good known config" or "last settings that worked"
choose your EN drive and hope.

or reboot, hitting F8
go safe mode, C: and see if it offers you a sys rest. from there?

I can't remember if that has been tried yet.

If not, I think you are going to need that XP, SP3 CD...

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

whats that got to do with this thread?

Hey,

I was poksting off my cell Phone, and I must have got the threads mixed somewhere. please remove it (and this) at your discretion, JB. Thx,

hotmatrixx

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

have you tried:

boot from D:
start-accessories-system tools
system Restore
restore to an earlier time
?

i know you have looked at it, but have you used it?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

if your d hp a alone of c then it would have a copy of the pst file for out look. Try opening out look after booting into d. If you find your emails then you could clone it back to c

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

i said to one client reboot the computer. So he did, steel caps and all

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

HI, Gerbil.

Thanks for backing off for me. I realise everyone's experiences are different. I am interested to find FF= GNU/open sauce (ask JB, inhouse joke) version of opera. so why is FF greater in popularity?

It would seem we have poached this thread...

New Kid On The Block

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

if D is a clone of c:, do you need tour .PST file?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I stand as an observer only - I say that FF3 is fine, because from my standpoint it is.

I am not discounting any opinion to the contrary. If there have been issues, then OK, I believe you, and I am kinda NKOTB here so maybe it has been resolved recently and so I never saw it.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

i've had zero issues with it. Opera has ads doesnt it? Unless you pay? Chrome has issues. Crashes all the time. No skins no plug ins. What version of ff are you running? What add ons? They could be the issue. I have ad and flash filters that work perfectly.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

That's a good point. I used to have issues with speed on DW but not anymore. I also have recently started doing it at 3am when our main, singular international exchange is unused.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Does anyone know of a way to disable auto restart on system failure that does not require being in Windows? I've got a laptop that will not start Windows in ANY mode (including Safe Mode) and a blue screen flashes by so quick I can't even read it. I'm wondering if there is anyway to stop that "flash" behavior long enough to read what the BSOD error message is! Thank you.

He didn't use the F8 key. it was just defaulting to the normal menu. the F8 will bring up more options.

If I am wrong then I owe you a rep point.

(What are those for, any way? PM me on that)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

once you have done that, while in safe mode go
start-control panel-add/remove programs
and uninstall adobe air. you dont need it and it has caused only trouble on 3 of the 4 pcs' I own.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Hi,
I am experiencing a slower and slower connection to Daniweb everytime I log on, why is this so?

I have tried at several locations on many diferent machines with the same result.

mine is getting faster.

using a tweaked firefox 3.

have you got dialup? if so DW will kill you - at 1mb+ per page at times.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Hey. I had to do it myself on a PC tonight. i FOUND THE EASY WAY>>>> YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when it is booting, force it into safe mode with the F8 Key.

there will be more options than the normal "...entering safe mode" screen, INCLUDING " disable auto restart on system failure"

Dude!!!

enjoy!!!!!!!

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Works fine for me on server 2003 and vista buis, then again im on a domain so maybe its diffrent

Works fo me too = XP pro, local PC. (standalone)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Go to run
Type mmc
Add the certificates snapin by going file -> add / remove snap-ins

Always one to do it the easy way, don't ya? ;)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

is that how its done.

...thats a bit easier.

they didn't show me THAT at TSHK (The Skool of Hard Knocks)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

he reviewer can't spell!!!

source VS sauce!!

and i quote:

While Mozilla has three years worth of contract with Google left to run, it does put the Open Sauce browser in a vulnerable position.

What could trigger Google falling out of love with the Open Sauce outfit?

HA HA!!

open the the sauce, then what? put it on the hot faux??

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

OK: if D: is a clone of C: and everything you want is on D: including all your files etc then this is easy.

go start-my computer. rightclick d:, rename it as 'good'
then rename c: as 'bad'

download and install xxclone onto d:
run it. from (good)
select (good): as source and (bad) as target.

NOT c: d:, because windows mixes up drive letters, but not drive names
go to cool tools, make bootable, make sure that the target is your good installation
select all three tick boxes, and start.

go back to the main menu (operation mode tab)

make sure source= good and target=bad
click start
read the warning.
be sure.
confirm it.

when windows starts next time, you will be able to select whether to load off "windows xp" or "xxcclone" (this is a dual boot menu)
select winxp
should be fine after this.

you can customise that menu from
control panel(classic mode) system-advanced-startup and shutdown-
select your default
show how long you want those items to display
easy peasy.

if things are not perfect on your good version, make them perfect before you start.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hey, jbennet, nice pic - I like it! I am not sure who you are asking, but I am running xp (all flavours) with SP3 (always) when I install those codecs.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

then click on the cert you want and click view certificate down the bottom.

1. silly question:

did you set sound on MAX on the sofware you were using? WMP starts on half, for eg and can be hardly audible.

2. have you tried another set of speakers? maybe the ones you have a re bung.

3.google for the Realtek AC'97 Codec version A3.49 I have installed this on over 40 PC's and works perfectly.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

that's fine. But (AND I FORGOT TO MENTION) that BartPE will need a plugin to access the PC registry instead of it's own:

I think it is

http://www.bootcd.us/BartPE_Plugin_Details/383/Registry-Editor-PE-v0_9c.html

but it has been so long that I cannot remember for sure.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

If that does not work then I have another trick or two that you can try.

Lovn' the "Blue Screen Of Death"
I get it all the time...

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Yeah OK, I Missed it.

try this on for size:
(I hope you are running xp or you will need to find the equivelent registry entry for your OS. but everything else should be the same.

1. go here for a bit of important info on your registry:
http://www.easydesksoftware.com/regfiles.htm

2.Get your hands on a copy of the disk for your OS (I know XP needs at least SP1 on the disk. I have not tried this with other OS)

3. download BartPE Builder
website for info:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

for the download:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#download

you will need to run BPE, let it add the files from the CD, create the .iso file and burn it to a CD.

boot off the CD.

BPE will prompt networking?. ok to say no.

hit go-run
type regedit
go to

localmachine-system-controlset001-control-crashcontrol -> AutoReboot (in the main pane)

double click, or modify,
set: valuedata as 1 or 0 - make it the opposite of what it is.

1 is reboot (ie 'true') and 0 is don't reboot.

also you could try in regedit
edit-find-
and type autoreboot

thats what it is for my system, anyway. XPPsp3

let me know how it turns out.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hell, that is the hard way.

go start-control panel
go to classic view
go system, advanced tab.

click the startup and recovery-settings button.
click the edit button.

one of the bottom two lines will say vista, somewhere. delete the line you want to get rid of. ONLY DELETE THIS LINE!!!! or your whole system will crash. but it is safe to delete this line.

save and exit.

Voila!

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

To disable it you go:

start-control panel (toggle into classic mode)- system-advanced
hit the advanced tab.

under the startup andbla bla there is a check box for the auto restart on system failure.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

that would be my first bet, too. try doing it without the router attached.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

"i had 30 dang viruses got rid of em all deleted them from quaritene i will do the online scanner now. and btw the problem has stopped but im gunna make sure they wont come back",

@ jbennet,

Thanks for the reply. That is good to know. This is my first laptop and as a refurbished (eBay) machine, I wanted to ensure it was as it should be. It kind of ended up being a bit pricey, around $400 CAD after shipping and duty. But, so far it does seem to be a good machine. Just need to get the speakers working....

Cheers!

Hi Jeromy.

For the speakers, that is a new thread. but there is someone else with the same problem if you like you can look at my suggestions there...

do yo have like... 10 computers connected to your network? or you could access your router and find where the dhcp pooling addresses start. 192.168.x.x are internal networking addresses and are invisible to the internet anyway.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hmm..i would figure that everytime you want to dock your laptop while you're at your desk, you want to charge the battery, use your laptop for some period of time before you undock. I can only imagine the standard design spec is to leave the battery so as to avoid the hassle of (1) unplugging your laptop all the time or (2) removing the battery when its full.

in other words, a circuit in the laptop would stop charging the battery when it was full...something wrong with my logic?

at this point, the battery is so toast, i just leave it plugged in all the time! a bit of a sacrifice for convenience

One would think that was a sensible idea... try telling asus that. they will probably jump on it and you will get... well, I couldn't possible say - but don't expect anything and you won't be dissapointed.

I have an ACER extensa 2000. batt life was around 2 h (5 yo notebook) but now I cannot get it under 45 deg celcius, the fan goes constantly and I am lucky to get 20 mins.
