My doubt is
1. How to increase visitor count in my web site ( describing about tourism ). What are the different ways.
2. What is back links ?
3. I heard about directory submissions. Any one explain what is it ?

Hi Rajeesh - welcome to DaniWeb... here's my best shot at answering your questions.

1. There are many different ways to drive qualified traffic to your site.. You'll probably want to start with optimizing your on-site content so it jives with the keyword search phrases you are targeting - which in your case has to do with tourism and travel. You'll also want to make sure you have compelling and comprehensive information with proper spelling and grammar to help make sure your site is viewed by users and search engines as a viable resource. Without this solid foundation, you will have an extremely difficult time driving qualified traffic and establishing your brand. Once you have this, you can start spreading the word via social media, press release(s), and good "old fashion" online and/or offline advertising.

2. So called "backlinks" are essentially link citations from other web resources. You want other websites to link to you because a) it usually means that others think your site is a worthy resource which is good for branding (note: stay away from bad neighborhoods and "link exchanges"); b) they can send you direct traffic and c) link citations from other quality and relevant resources will help your …

am not sure that's true. How does SEO improve the "quality" of traffic to your site???

SEO by definition means that your site is optimized for relevant keyword search phrases. Therefore, ranking well for those keywords, in the search engines, will definitely improve the quality of traffic to your site. In fact, it doesn't get much more quality.

That's a great point. Marketing digital goods and services is certainly different. Some incentives that have worked for me are:
- volume discounts ie. 10 or more downloads/orders qualify for "agency" or "wholesale" discount. Or you could do it like "buy X, get one free."
- promotional discounts. Send existing users an "exclusive promo code" they can use and save on any online purchase
- And like InsightsDigital mentions... leak "special offers" and discounts into the social media realm.

So far, I'm a Big Fan of the new layout! Granted, it will take some getting used to but overall I think this is a much more professional design and hopefully, with a few tweaks here and there (and most of our feedback taken into consideration), the new skin of DaniWeb will prove to be much more efficient and user-friendly. I think it will..

In the meantime, here are a few things that might warrant some consideration (and i apologize if these were already mentioned):

1. In a subforum, I cannot 'Go to the Last Post' in a New Window (or Tab). Holding Ctrl and clicking the image(?) keeps me in the same window/tab. Additionally, Right clicking the image or link does not bring me the option to open in a new tab. So far, this is the only area of the site that fails to bring me the link in a new tab but perhaps there are others?

go to last post.jpg

2. I noticed a lot of feedback saying that the font throughout the site was too big. Keep in mind that you might have set the 'Zoom' on your browser too high. I originally thought the text size throughout the the site was way too small but that was because I had my browser zoomed out for the old DaniWeb design.Hitting Ctrl+0 to reset the zoom on my browser did the trick and I now see fonts as they were intended. Wonder …

There are a number of marketing tactics that will help push a sale along.. most of them have to do with language or playing with perceived values.

- "only X amount left in stock"
- "free shipping on orders over $20"
- strike through the retail value and show actual price. User perceives that they pay less
- price products below whole numbers. For example, $49.95

Because of comment and sig spam, most reputable community and social media sites employ 'nofollow' attributes. Search engines too view these links with less weight than a typical citation. Don't waste time commenting on blogs or sig spamming forums. By doing so you are classifying your site in the dumpster of the internet. Try focusing on creating a valuable resource. EARN the citations by promoting your valuable resource within your niche industry. Listen to your users/customers and provide a better experience. Optimize sites naturally.

Usually just contact the store and let them know. If their customer service is any good they will quickly void or refund the duplicate charge. Worst case scenario you file a chargeback with your credit card company.

Thanks for putting it into perspective and sorry to hear you are having a rough go at it. Based on your accounts, it *does sound like CC is playing favorites. Meanwhile you were one of their advertisers! You would think they would show a little professional courtesy!

It could very well be that the owner or moderator is in business with Bonnie and Clyde.. errr.. Rudy and Rosie.. or perhaps Rudy and Rosie are bribing the forum moderators to keep their stuff heavily talked about and their competitors buried. Either way you are obviously in a tough spot. You can try complaining to the person above the port manager (if you haven't done so already) but if you do, go in armed with some evidence. Take screenshots of genuine posts by your clients that were deleted and present them to a manager or exec over at CC.

Otherwise, i guess your stuck playing their game but that might not be so difficult. Maybe i'm just oblivious but you can play the role of having "great public relations." You can do some actual Press Releases on the cheap. Maybe announce that you are giving away a free cruise - or you gave away a free cruise and throw in a quote from one of you friends about how great it was. Stir the pot a little. Make some waves in the industry. Do stuff to help increase public perception (on the web). No reason you can't also setup a …

Offering such general topics for discussion may not be a good start - as there are already thousands of other forums discussing the same thing. Instead, try offering something unique and compelling. Something that will motivate user participation.

So what's the plan here? Post a non-topical or slightly agreeable comment and hope Google counts it as a relevant link?

Newsflash: Google gives little to no credit for comment links. They also trust sites less when they link to spammy sites or bad neighborhoods. They encourage links to good sites.

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

yea - i have been noticing the same. Typically - those 'text book definitions' are just copy/pasted content they are spamming forums with. If you see something like this - try copy and pasting a blurb from the post into a search engine, throw some quotes around it, and see if you find any exact matches. If the post proves to be duplicated spam - please report it as "bad" and we/I will review and remove accordingly.

As far as opening up a separate forum for newbie posters, I think that kind of steers away from the community aspect of DaniWeb. I'm not sure we want to give off the impression that beginners should play in their own corner. Besides, we would still need veteran posters to help inform the newbies and steer them in the right direction - which is kind of what we are already doing.

Ultimately, I think this is more of an issue with Signature Spammers. The ones that you mentioned above and the ones that come in to a thread and just repeat what you say or ask the same questions that were already addressed - just so they can drop their link. These guys are thread stoppers. They add little to no value to the discussion and unfortunately - I am not sure what we can do to combat this. :(

Personally - i only join groups or become a fan if I have a specific interest in the topic or person. There are some people that will just join because you asked them to - or see that you joined and they just want to be a part of the community. Nowadays - there is so much information, email, and social media being crammed down our throats, I try to limit my involvement whenever possible and reduce the noise.

Hi Karen, Thank you for this question. There is actually NO correlation between Google PageRank and web traffic. In other words, a site with high pagerank does not mean that it will get more traffic than a site with low pagerank.

Ultimately, you really don't need to worry much about Google Toolbar PageRank. Instead, focus on providing quality and unique content. Make sure to optimize your website's code so that search engines can easily crawl and index the site. Advertise on other relevant websites to get in front of your target audience. Look into setting up PPC campaigns with Google AdSense, YSM, and Microsoft adCenter.

What do you think?

If you are going to submit to a directory, be sure to submit to the ones that have editorial integrity. In other words, does the directory reject spammy or low quality sites that do NOT meet their criteria for inclusion? Steer clear of the directories that link to anyone and everyone who submits. A directory that links to low quality and spammy sites has little to no link value to offer.

It looks like Twitter Lists have arrived - Hallelujah! I just signed in to my account and got the following:

"New! Lists. A great way to organize the people you follow and discover new and interesting accounts. (BETA)

Lists are timelines you build yourself, consisting of friends, family, co-workers, sports teams, you name it. You're part of a small group receiving this feature, so don't tweet about it yet!"

Here's a recent rant from search journalist, Danny Sullivan, regarding link spam. This is a good read for anyone involved with SEO.

"...the core problem is that the web has people who think nothing of vandalizing other web sites. That’s what link spamming is. You’re not adding value to a site. You’re simply spray painting garbage on someone else’s property, for your own personal benefit. You have no manners. You have no morals. You ought to be ashamed." - read more.

Community sites, such as discussion forums, social networking platforms, and blogs can use automated filters and human moderators to help combat spam but this does not fully deter spammers. Additionally, there are no federal or state laws (that i know of) against bombing someone else's website with irrelevant comments and threads in order to obtain a link for your own personal gain.

Other than moderating and software filtering, I wonder what other methods site owners use to combat link spam?

Tagging not only helps Search Engines crawl your site but it is really meant for helping users find the information they seek. I use tags on just about every program or interface that enables them... For example, CentralDesktop, Salesforce, Delicious, Twitter (#Hashtags), Flickr..

I think it depends on your reasons for getting involved... Social Media can be a powerful tool for branding, announcing new products/services, promoting special offers, and it could act as a medium for you customers to contact you - as well as share positive (or negative) experiences with others.

If your users or followers see that you have a Social Media platform, they might appreciate the fact that you have opened the doors of communication to the public and themselves. So i don't necessarily think it is in bad taste for a funeral parlor to have a Twitter account or Facebook page... as long as they are doing it for the right reasons - ie. exposure for the company and to open the doors of communication.
