I always use also there are hundreds of free backlink checker tool available like backlinkwatch, iwebtool etc....

You can use Yahoo to check the back links just type link:
or instead there is a site called baclinkwatch, search it on google and you can determine the exact no of backlinks to your site

We include yahoo site explorer in our member accounts, and the info is there all the time on demand to view backlinks to a particular URL.
