Random programs won't run

Hello, im sorry to bother you all, must be alot of people with problems. I've searched the web tirelessly and cannot seem to come up with much, then i saw a similar problem on here and the person who replied did a great job and seemed very helpful, so i was hoping maybe somebody could help me out ^^.

Certain programs just won't open, xfire for example, steam being another, smartFTP..

(however some will run, messenger runs fine, firefox runs fine thankfully).

*EDIT*: New/Further problem just occured, desktop wallpaper disappeared to a light grey and no shortcuts on the desktop can now be clicked.

I have run Vundofix, to no avail. I have run registry cleaners galore, since that was my initial hunch on the problem, ive run virus scanners, spybot, all sorts, but no luck.

I would be extremely greatful if someone with some knowledge on the subject could enlighten me.

anyone? please this is urgent, i have deadlines to meet, just tried to reinstall the OS and my cd/dvd drive isn't even working, so im screwed unless i sort it as it is

Download
SDFix
and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the
following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the
  Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

• In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract
  All,
• Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to
  start the script.
• Type Y to begin the script.
• It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the
  registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool
  will be running and removing files.
• When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and
  display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load
  your desktop icons.
• Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the
  contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with
  a new HijackThis log

Thank-you for your reply crunchie. Unfortunatly i couldnt delay any longer unsure as to whether i would receive help or if that help would even solve the issues. I managed to get the cd/dvd drive working and had no choice but to reinstall.

Irony is something has gone wrong along the way, now i have a supposed version of XP that looks like 2000 to me -_-, no files or anything, no internet (im on another computer), no nothing.

No viruses though either i guess eh ;) lol.
