Hello,

This is my first post, and I'm not too sure what my next step should be...

The problem started yesterday, and I suspect it's related to a virus that was supposedly removed by AVG.

Here's what's going on:
- Windows Explorer crashes every 3 seconds; it restarts, then the message box pops up again
- Right after that message comes up (on startup), my laptop claims run32dll.exe has stopped working
- Other programs seem to be going wonky: I've seen Windows Defender message, Synaptics ,
Windows Task Scheduler, etc.
- I've run AVG scan, 6 threats were found, along with tracking cookies... removed all of it.
- I tried opening HiJack This, but it won't open either.
- No Uninstall option in Remove A Program.

I have no idea what to do next. Everyone always asks for a HiJack This log, but how do I run it if it won't open?

Other things that may help:
- I'm a noob with computers
- I'm running Vista Home Premium
- I'm using an HP Pavillion laptop
- 3 GB Ram
- 220 GB HDD
- I'll give other details if needed and I'll respond quickly :)

Please help, and many thanks in advance.

Justin

What version of HiJackThis is it? The newest version is 2.0.2.
Download the new version and try that one.

Also, give us the names of the items removed by AVG

Update: I've solved the explorer.exe and run32dll.exe problem... A virus probably accessed the registry and added "Taskman"
with the value run32dll.exe in winlogon. I removed it, and now explorer works fine.

However, the problem is NOT resolved. Here's what I'm still experiencing:
- Can't uninstall programs in Control Panel (The Uninstall / Change button is simply not there) - HOWEVER, a few recently
added files can apparently be uninstalled; does this have something to do with the virus changing registry or files?
- Certain programs don't run: Malware bytes, Hijack This, etc.
- Programs requiring Internet don't install correctly - notably Spyware Doctor [Smart Update can't update] and Spybot S & D
(I can, however, access the Internet...)
- Computer is running a little slower than before the virus (I managed to speed it up a little since my last post - don't know how)
- AVG Free 8 detected no threats when I ran a system scan last night
- BitDefender trial can't scan past a file named SOFTWARE.sys, so it doesn't reach the fixing part
- Kaspersky won't install because of AVG, and I can't uninstall AVG - the uninstaller says the program isn't installed, yet it obviously is.
- Whenever I use Google and click a link, it brings me to the wrong site - mostly ads, or similar products, most likely more viruses
- I'm still clueless as to what to do next.

Also, I removed 4 threats with smaller fractions of BitDefender scanning:
- Application.Generic.30184
- Application.Pwcrack.Cain.GL
- Worm.Generic.47369
- Worm.Generic.47845

The last 2 couldn't be removed because they were in an archive - I deleted the whole folder containing the archive.
In regards to these threats, they didn't seem to cause much damage because I only started getting symptoms July 2nd.

Finally, if it helps, I know exactly what caused the virus. It was a torrent download, Network Magic Patch. The patch totally
screwed up my laptop. I'm ashamed I had to download a patch in the first place, or that I even had uTorrent on my computer,
but I have removed uTorrent and Network Magic altogether. No more torrents for me; I've learned my lesson the hard way.

Thank you all for viewing this, and for trying to help.
Justin, a teen who won't be using torrents for the rest of his life :|

If you can download that new version of HiJackThis do so. Then rename it to hjtscan.exe and try to run it that way.

If you already have MBAM installed on your computer.
Please navigate to the MBAM folder located in the Program Files directory.

Locate MBAM.exe and rename it to winlogon.exe

Once renamed double click on the file to open MBAM and select Full Scan

At the end of the scan allow MBAM to remove what it had found then reboot.

Alright, wow.. Thanks. Malware Bytes works now, and as for HiJack This, I just went to program files and ran Administrator.exe and it works -.-
What do I have to do with them? Malware removes, but for Hijack This, where do I post log? Here, or elsewhere?

You need to post the MBA-M log, which can be found in the Tab of course labeled Logs. Double click on the one you were able to run where the removals worked.
Next run HJT, save the log and post it right back here along with that MBA-M log.

Sorry 'bout the really slow reply... Here are the 2 logs:

Sorry, but you only did the Quick Scan with MBA-M. That doesn't scan everything. You need to update it again and then do the Full Scan. This will take longer of course because it scans everything. Have it remove everything found, Reboot and then do a new HJT scan.
Post back with both new logs.

Why sorry? Don't worry about it.. :P

Thanks for the help :D

I am concerned about this entry that shows in each and every MBA-M log
C:\Windows\System32\MSIVXcount (Trojan.Agent) -> Delete on reboot.
And then along with it a different file each time:
c:\Users\User\Desktop\winlogon.exe (Heuristics.Reserved.Word.Exploit) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\install.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

We may need to run another tool, but FIRST the other concerning thing which shows in your HJT logs is that you appear to be running PORTIONS of multiple anti-virus programs:
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Engine\16.5.0.134\ccSvcHst.exe
C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2009\bdagent.exe
C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\
Now those are parts of three different anti-virus programs, this is a No-No for sure.
Which one is the currently installed and fully installed anti-virus program. All three have numerous files noted, no, not all are running, I don't actually see AVG8 running anywhere but there are NUMEROUS listings for files that are trying to run and appear to be missing.
Which one is it? The other two, along with all references to them need to be totally Uninstalled. Note I said Uninstalled, not just deleted.
Can you post back asap and let me know, I will try to tell you how to get rid of all references to the ones you are no longer using.
AND if you don't currently like the one you think is there I can tell you also how to get rid of that one and give you a link for two of the best FREE ones out there today.
Did you REBOOT the computer after running MBA-M?

I did reboot after running MBA-M...

As for the antivirus programs, each has its own story.

AVG 8, I tried to uninstall (from the Program Uninstaller - searched Uninstall AVG in the start menu...). However, it said the program wasn't even installed. Then I tried deleting every file I could find linked to AVG. As for the error in the uninstaller, that happens with EVERY program I try uninstalling. Something isn't right with that..

As for BitDefender, can't uninstall that one either, and it doesn't even work (it freezes after it hits this file: C:\Windows\System32\Config\System.SAV or .SYS...).

Norton doesn't work at all, and can't uninstall that either.

Basicly, I'm trying all sorts of different antivirus programs to remove the threats. I can't uninstall when they're done, so they just keep adding up. Bad decision on my part :(

So, what's next?

Thanks again for all the help.

Ok, try these:
AVG ANTIVIRUS REMOVAL TOOL

Download to the desk top. Close all other applications.
Double click to run the tool
During the removal procedure you will be asked to restart your computer.

NORTON AV REMOVAL TOOL
Save file to the desktop.
Double click file to begin removal
Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

BitDefender Uninstall Tool
Download and save the BitDefender Uninstall Tool on your computer into a location of your choice. This tool can be used for 32 bit operating systems (most commonly used operating systems by home users)
After the download completes go to the location where you downloaded and run (double-click) it;
After a couple of moments the uninstall tool interface will appear;
Click Uninstall;
Wait for the tool to display the completion message and then restart your computer.

Alright, ran all 3 tools, and laptop rebooted 3 times XD

What's next?

Thanks for the removal tools + help!

You should do the following:
Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and attach the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

* You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.

* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.
Reboot the computer.
Run another MBA-M scan, remove what ever is found.
Reboot again
Run another HJT scan, save the log.
Post back with all three logs.

I'm at the MBA-M part.. Already encountered 2 errors in the described steps...

First error: I completed the ESET Online Scan, but the log only displays 2 lines of text, which mean nothing to me. However, I did copy the infected files to a txt file, if that helps?

2nd Error; This one's bigger: MBA-M has stopped working in normal mode AND safe mode. It simply doesn't work as mbam.exe, and so I changed the name to winlogon.exe... Now when I run it, I get 2 error messages:

vbAccelerator SGrid II Cont...
Run-time error '0'

MBA-M
Run-time error '440':
Automation error

So, what's next?
Thanks...
