Hi Guys;

Did attempt a search, but didnt find anything about the malware bytes app freezing up, did see some comments on "your computer at risk" firewall issue, but was unable to resolve it.

After running Malware bytes several times and detecting one infected object, the Malware Bytes appplication "freezes" half way through the quick scan (after scanning 52,640 files displays: c:windows\installer\4f365540.msp - Time elapsed: 47 minutes, 15 seconds) resulting in my having to power off my PC. When I turn it back on, I do get the proverbial "Your computer might be at risk" firewall message at the lower right hand side of the taskbar. I tried downloading Ad Aware (Lavasoft) to see if this app would be succesful, but it also freezes up (after 11:32 minutes of scanning - 13,757 scanned files). I ran the Highjack This app you guys suggested last time, and below are the logs. Please let me know if you see anything that needs to be fixed, in order to get this PC back up and running. it is quite slow, which is not typically the case. Thanks in advance for your time and kind assistance.

P.S. We no longer use IE with this desktop (for the last couple of months), since Google Chrome seems to work faster and more efficiently.

Well, when working as a consultant and computer security professional (back to employed status as Senior Systems Engineer for tier-one mobile phone company), I would always use a Linux system to scan and disinfect Windows drives, and never was not successful in doing so. However, I would use 2-3 different professional-level scanners as they each catch different stuff. Where each intersected, that was a definite problem to be removed. Where 2 of 3 intersected, likely same. Where only one of 3 would find a problem, I would investigate further. I have found that a lot of modern viruses will also infect the shared libraries on the recovery partition, resulting in a reinfection if you try to restore the system to factory settings after trying to clean the infection. In any case, it is getting harder and harder to fix this stuff without a complete wipe and reinstall of the OS from read-only media (DVD). Myself, I only run Linux, and run Windows in virtual machines with current snapshots, so if (when) it is infected, I can restore the system to the last known good image. I do run virus scanners on my Linux systems fairly regularly, but so far, after about 10 years, I have never had a problem. Windows - not so lucky!

As you have probably found, NOT using IE for web browsing (using Chrome or Firefox) is probably the best thing you can do to keep from getting pwned.

Hi Folks; sorry for the delay in responding; I decided to purchase a new PC, since I couldnt get my old PC to run GMER, or Malwarebytes, or any of the other diagnostics recommended by you. The different apps / diagnostics would start, but could not get them to complete without my old PC shutting down and restarting itself again. Since it was an older PC (5-6 years, running on XP) i figured it was time to upgrade to a new PC running on Windows 7.

Again, sorry for the late response, and thanks again for your time and assistance.

Regards,

Alex
