Hello Aniket_3, welcome to Daniweb!

To start with, could you please provide us with more specific details regarding your hardware specs?
Since you indicated that you were installing driver updates when the problem occured, giving us exact information about your hardware components could help us track down what went wrong during the update process.

Also: if you happened to catch the name of any of the drivers that were trying to install themselves, that would helpful as well.

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

"... and then things started on a terrible downhill spiral."
Why did that happen Dani? Any ideas?

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

pauly_1,
As other members here have already indicated, your original post ("Why should microsoft didnot do the proper update for Internet explorer. There is lot of problem of explorer") is very vague and does not give us any information that we can use to help you.
If you are still having problems with this issue, please post the following information:

  • The exact version of Windows that you are using.
  • The exact version of Internet Explorer that you are using.
  • The full and exact content of any and all error messages that you've seen that might relate to your initial complaint ("Why should microsoft didnot do the proper update for Internet explorer. There is lot of problem of explorer")

Also- please be aware that Microsoft has discontinued active support of Internet Explorer in favor of their new browser called "Microsoft Edge".

Yes Dani, you're right.
I started volunteering as an online troubleshooter way back in the very early days of computing.net, Linuxquestions.org, and JustLinux.org... long before DaniWeb existed.
I was initially introduced to Daniweb by a member of JustLinux (his name was Alex or Alec, IIRC), and after that I ended up spending almost all of my online troubleshooting time on DaniWeb rather than on the sites where I'd previously been active.

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

Hi folks,
I joined DaniWeb over 13 years ago when the site was barely getting off the ground; it's good to come back here so many years later and find that the site is still here and thriving! ;-)

Since you said that you've been "given" this router by someone else, have you tried to entirely reset the router back to its default factory settings before assuming that the device itself is defective?
A "Factory Reset" is the first thing that I do whenever I "inherit" a network device from someone else.
Instructions for doing so for your R7000 can be found here:

HDD is activated but the cooling fan does not work... Can any one suggest that a faulty fan could stop the computer from turning on?

Depending on exactly when the cooling fan failed (and how much longer you used the laptop after that fan did fail), then yes- the fan failure could certainly have cause other components in the laptop to overheat and fail as well. (Laptops are much less forgiving than desktop systems when it comes to questions of proper cooling.)

I do see that you've posted this same question on a Yahoo support site, and that you've gotten an answer there indicating that the fan is not the issue.
However, the person who replied to your question there didn't take in to account what I said above: if you ran the system too long without noticing that the fan had failed, other hardware components may have been damaged.

Hello Pedro 3,

For one thing: If you removed the CPU (and/or RAM modules) from the motherboard, then yes- you will definitely get a different "Beep Code" than the one you originally got.
BIOS beep codes relate to the installed hardware, so if you change any of that hardware, you will get different beep codes.

You said that you originally got 3 beeps; did those beeps repeat at a certain interval, or did you just get 3 beeps and nothing further?

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

Hi ChargrO,

Hardware could certainly be at the root of the problem, especially given that you've already done a full reformat/reinstall.
On the other hand though- if your Dad installed/reinstalled any programs after you did the full OS reinstall, he might well have reintroduced a software-related problem.

If you can, please give us as many details about the problem as possible (the system's hardware/software specs, the full and exact text of any error messages that you've received, etc.), OK?
Basically- the more information that you can give us up front, the faster we can help you resolve the problem.

I'm a 34 year old kid :)

Hey, like I said- hang on to that thought!
(I'm a 51 year old kid at this point, and remebering that I'm a kid at heart has kept me alive through at least one or two incidences where I wouldn't be here otherwise). No Joke.

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

On second thought, I feel like a little kid next to all of you...

It's all good blackmiau- hang on to that thought about being a little kid.
And when you get to be around our age... hang on to that thought even more! ;-)

Crikey- you're right... there were loads of Amiga mags available in print back then, weren't there?
I'd forgotten just how popular the Amiga platform was until you just brought it back up... very cool.

Get JRT and hopefully it will sort it out.
Post the notepad notes :)
PS: this shoud be on the viruses section

Hi Mya:),

What blackmiau said above is true-
Given the symptoms you've described, it does sound like you have a browser-redirect/browser-hijack infection, and you'll definitely get more "expert eyeballs" looking at that problem if you start a new thread in our Viruses, Spyware and other Nasties Forum.

Please start a new thread there, and when you do, please try to include as many details as you can regarding the exact problem you're experiencing. From there, we can help you work through the steps needed to clean the infection(s) out of you system.

I wonder, though, about the subkeys in \Tracing, and why Softonic would be interested in remote access.

Interesting question about the \Tracing subkeys, gerbil- and a question to which I wasn't able to find a definite answer when I looked.

Still curious about those entries myself...

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

Wow- that's a very old drive!

If the sound is really coming from the drive itself rather than from the computer's built-in speaker, my guess it that the sound is caused by the drive's head armature mechanism (or possibly the drive's spindle motor) trying to engage but failing to do so. If either is true, that would indicate a pretty fatal electro-mechanical failure of the drive.

Can you connect the drive to the computer diectly? That is- does your computer have an available IDE/PATA port on the motherboard that you can use, to eliminate any possiblity that the external IDE-to-USB convertor is interfering in any way?
(I know you said that you're sure that your IDE/USB converter works, but external drive enclosures/connectors can often get in the way when trying to revive a "dead" drive.)

Wow- decisions, decisions! I can't say which is my most favorite quote, but I definitely do have a few that I've collected over the years:

"Does this path have a heart?
If it does, the path is good; if it doesn't it is of no use.
Both paths lead nowhere, but one has a heart and the other doesn't.
One makes for a joyful journey; as long as you follow it you are one with it.
The other will make you curse your life.
One makes you strong, the other weakens you."
~ Carlos Castaneda, The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge ~

"There has grown up in the minds of certain groups in this country the notion that because a man or a corporation has made a profit out of the public for a number of years, the government and the courts are charged with the duty of guaranteeing such profit in the future, even in the face of changing circumstances and contrary public interest. This strange doctrine is not supported by statute nor common law. Neither individuals nor corporations have any right to come into court and ask that the clock of history be stopped, or turned back, for their private benefit."

So... how does someone who always refused to take english classes and is not one bit interested in learning, choose an IT path?

Mmmm... I definitely see your point there!

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

Sorry, I don't know what you mean

You know, it's been so long since I was last here that I can't really explain the details; old age does Bad Things to one's memory, after all!
I don't honestly remember all of the specifics of the old site's layout; I just know that when I returned recently, everything felt "foreign" to me.

I think it was probably just first impressions though- reorientation, getting used to when things are located, and all of that.
Now that I've had a chance to browse around a bit more, I'm pretty comfortable with it :-)

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

It's harder trying to get some work done and constantly being called by the colleague almost every 5 minutes to translate something for her.

I totally understand. One company that I'm working with does a lot of business with partners in China, so I know how problematic translation can be :-(

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

DMR!!!! Welcome back cobber :)

Thanks happygeek- it's good to see some "familiar faces" here after all of my time away!!

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

What are your first impressions after all this time?

Well, I'm honestly finding the site to be a little less intuitive navigation-wise than it was back when I was a regular here.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it has something to do with the fact that the old site had a more of "File- Manager" type of look-n-feel to it, if you know what I mean... and that kind of sparse, linear presentation just fits the way my mind works a bit better.

It's really too early for me to say though, because the site has also grown by magnitudes since I was here last- so I'm still "learning the lay of the new land" so to speak!

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

Yeah- it can be hard to find reputable download sites that don't bundle any "crapware" with their downloads.

Your JRT log shows a few references to "softonic", which is a relatively popular download site that unfortunately is kown to bundle adware, toolbars, "download helpers", etc. with their downloads. :-(

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

Cool- so everything is good with your system now, yes?

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

Hi blackmiau,

Are you sure that you were experiencing exactly the same problems that the Oringinal Poster in this thread was experiencing?

It's hard for me to tell because the original post was deleted by the moderators, but regardless... you'll probably get more immediate attention if you start your own thread on your problem rather than tagging on to the bottom of a 7-month old post. If you do decide to start you own thread, please include as much specific information about your problem as possible.

For the moment though- the log you posted does seem to indicate that JRT did succefully fix some probelmatic items.

Do any errors/issues still persist after running JRT? If so, post the full and exact details of the problems and we'll take it from there, OK?

Hello ARIGAR,

Determining the specific identity of an Internet user is actually pretty difficult, and in many cases totally impossible. As CimmerianX and heXenDoKtor have already explained, users can hide their true location/identity by using proxies, forged email headers, and other mechanisms.

Beyond that- there's also the simple fact that (unlike phone numbers, for example) IP addresses are rarely permanentaly tied to a specific person, and this especially applies to Internet users with residential/non-business Internet Service accounts. For those types of users, Internet sevice providers generally assign Dynamic IP addresses (as opposed to "Static" IP addresses), which means that any given user's IP can change at any time.

At best- you might be able to locate the general area in which a person lives based on their IP address, but (agian- unlike looking up a phone number) an IP trace will rarely if ever give you any personally-identifiable information about the person in question.

If you are asking about how to find a user because you are having problems with harassing/abusive/spam emails, the best thing to do would be to determine the person's email provider and then send an "abuse complaint" to that company.

"... Can you copy the Program Files folder to another drive and run it from there?"

Unfortunately, the answer to that question is usually "no".

When you install a program in Windows, the installation process will not only create files under the "Program Files" or "Program File (x86)" folders, but it will also add entries in to the Windows Registry, and perhaps install files (drivers, for example) in locations other than the "Program Files" or "Program File (x86)" folders.

Given that, simply copying a program's "Program Files" folder to another computer will not work.

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

I can't believe it Dani-

I joined this site well over ten years ago- and at that time you were still in school, and your site had less than 5,000 members (I think I'm member #4900 or something like that).

I see that you've grown to over 1 Million members now- Congratulations!!!

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

how do you find the UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters"

You need to run the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) to gain access to those items, but there are a couple of "fix" files available for this problem which will save you the hassle (and potential danger) of having to manually edit the Registry. Try this fix (it's for XP, but might work on Vista too):

Download xp_cd_dvd_fix.zip.

* Right-click on the file and choose the "Extract all..." option; follow the Wizard's prompts to extract the enclosed xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs file.

* Double-click on xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs to run it. If you receive a confirmation or warning message asking if you really want to run the script, choose YES. When the script finishes running, you will get a message saying that it has done so, and that you should reboot.

* Reboot the computer, and then check Device Manager; your drives should be present again.

DMR,
... i hope you're still kickin around daniweb.

Hello from two years ago! :icon_mrgreen:
I haven't actually been active here in quite a while, but I still get notified about threads that I was subscribed to at the time I left.

Glad you were able to get things sorted out, and thanks (a lot) for the "isorecorder" link!
I haven't looked at the program yet, but from your description it sounds like isorecorder takes the Voodoo out of burning ISO images; something which is definitely a common stumbling block for people trying to make bootable CD.

Thanks again :)

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

...nearest to the power supply on the hard...

There is no power supply on the hard drive itself, but if you mean the power connector, then the side of the cable which has the colored stripe along it would conventionally be nearest that connector. The stripe marks the cable's #1 wire/pin, and that should correspond to Pin #1 of the drive's IDE connector.

You can (and should) check the drive manufacturer's website for cabling/connection info for the specific model of drive, because the orientation of the IDE cable may not be as I described for every make/model of drive.

The order in which your computer looks for bootable media (Floppy disk, CD-ROM, Hard Drive) might need to be adjusted so that the machine boots from the CD drive first.

Here are the instructions for that procedure from IBM/Lenovo's support site; the steps might be slightly different for your particular model of Thinkpad, but they should be at least close enough that you'll b able to figure it out:

1. Power off the ThinkPad, if it is turned on.
2. Power on the ThinkPad.
3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the ThinkPad logo is seen on the
screen.
4. Choose Startup from the menu
5. Choose Boot from the menu (*).
6. In Boot Priority Order, set ATAPI CD0 to the top of the list, 1.
7. Press F10 to save the new setup.
(Insert the Win 2000 install CD at this point)
9. Restart the system; it should now detect the CD and attempt to boot from it

You're welcome; glad we could help!

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

found these and I use my ZoneLab firewall to block them ...

Yes, but you're still infected. Those two randomly-named .exe files that HJT found are just a couple of components of a larger malware infection, other pieces of which may still be active.

You should probably start a new thread of your own, post a full new HijackThis log in that thread, and we'll take the removal/disinfection process from there.

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

That symptom could have a non-malicious cause, try this first:

* Open the Event Viewer utility in your Administrative Tools control panel and look through your System and Application logs for entries flagged with "Error" or "Warning", especially
those which mention the "Explorer.exe" program, or whose time-stamps coincide with the occurrences of the problem.

* Double-clicking on such an entry will open a properties window with more detailed information on the error; post the details from a representative sample of some of the different error messages (please don't post duplicates of a given entry, or flood us with the entire contents of the logs).

* To post the details:
In the Properties window of a given entry, click on the button with the graphic of two pieces of paper on it; the button is at the right of the window just below the up arrow/down arrow
buttons. You won't see anything happen when you click the button, but it will copy all of the details to the Windows clipboard. You can then paste the details into your next post here.

The basic steps to try:

** Note: Connect a computer to one of the router's wired Ethernet ports for the following.

1. Try connecting to the router by its default IP address instead of the URL of its built-in setup pages (www.routerlogin.net). If that doesn't work. In your browser's location/address box, type the following and then hit Enter:

http://192.168.1.1

2. The WGR614 assigns IP addresses from the 192.168.1.1 range to the computers that are connected to it, and assigns itself the IP address of 192.168.0.1. On your computer, do the following:

- Click on the "Run..." option under your Start button menu.
- In the resulting dialog box, type "cmd" (omit the quotes) in the "Open:" box and then hit enter. This will open a DOS window.
- At the DOS prompt, type the following command and tell us what it reports:

ipconfig /all

You should get something very similar to:

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : TEST
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

ive been all a round the net and cont find any help... what can i do

The first thing you need to do is give us the exact make/model of the Ethernet card; once we have that info, we can probably find the correct driver for you.

Since your computer can't access the Internet, you'll have to download the driver file on a computer that has Internet access, burn the driver file to CD, and copy it on to your machine from the CD.

Hi my hard disk drive D: appears in "DEVICE MANAGER" but does not appear in "MY COMPUTER" How do i get it to appear in "MY COMPUTER"?

1) Please read the following Microsoft support article (especially the "Symptoms" section), which describes the particular CD/DVD drive problem we've mostly been dealing with in this thread:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q270008/

2) If your symptoms are the same as those described in the support article, follow the instructions for downloading and using the xp_cd_dvd_fix script that I supplied back in the 4th post in this thread.

3) If your symptoms are not exactly the same, please give us as much specific detail concerning your problem as possible (the text of any errors you receive, some history concerning the onset of the problem, details of all troubleshooting procedures you've tried so far, etc.).

Hopefully, there are some Monty Python fans here who can help me.

I recall seeing a Monty Python skit in which there was blood squirting all over....

The skit was "Salad Days"; it was a spoof on both the musical "Salad Days" and on filmmaker Sam Peckinpah. In my version of "The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus" DVD collection, it's episode #33 on DVD #11.

It won't be on the titles you mentioned; the first two titles are feature movies, and "Now for Something Completely Different" is a movie which is basically a redo of some of the Python's better-known skits (but not Salad Days).
