This post and thread should probably be closed.
Talking about a 10 year old mouse issue that doesn't say if it's wireless or wired. The posters that talk about wireless mice neglect to mention if theirs are optical or laser, which are fully different in action on my Macs. No known OS.
The two year old link, given by jfoo, in here is not working.
Just a suggestion.

Thanks to both repliers. I finally got settled enough to check into this. Still haven't looked up ifconfig to see how to do it. Charter tech told me what I thought it might be and it was. I switched out an old Linksys router for the D-Link router my father had and all is well. For three days now anyway.

Thanks again for the interest and advice.

Danarchy 16 Junior Poster

Thanks for the reply CimmerianX.
I know how to run ipconfig/all on the Windows machines, but not ifconfig on my Mac.
And I don't know, yet, if the Windows machines are using ICS. But I know my father had set up his machine to be able to connect my mother's printer and some other things to his. That sounds like it may be the issue.
But, when I get back down there, I'll do the ipconfig on their machines and look up ifconfig for the Mac. I imagine that's a terminal command.

Danarchy 16 Junior Poster

Usually, if you delete a zip file that hasn't been opened, you're good to go. Use Secure Delete (and that can be adjusted to more secure levels) and you're even better off. Takes longer because it over writes more than standard Delete.

Danarchy 16 Junior Poster

As the subject says, I really don't know where to put this, but since Windows folk are usually more versed in router set ups than Mac users, I thought this would be the place.
Move it if it's not, thank you.

Whenever I go out to my folk's place, they have Windows 7 and a DLink router. While my father was alive, my mother had this same problem. If his machine went to sleep, for her to work on her machine, she'd have to awaken his for her to get on line. And the same for me. I'd have to awaken either of their machines for me to get on line. Now that he's gone, I have his machine off unless I'm updating or using it. So I get this error message when I try to get on line that says something to the effect of, 'IP address xxxxxxxxxx is in use'. So then I get up and go to her room to awaken her machine and I'm back on line. I thought from the beginning that it was a router or ISP issue. They had one ISP that told them that it was because their HP computers had a close 'number' to each other and that was that. She's switched to Charter as her ISP and it still happens. Never heard of two machines from the same maker and near same models corrupting the router. I used to just unplug the router and reboot it and all would …

I've found out from experience and Apple Care that I can no longer print documents or .jpgs that are taller than my 23" portrait/vertical oriented monitor or any other for that matter. Preview has been crippled in Snow Leopard so that it will not recognize that the image/document is taller/longer and then spread that out into 2 to 10 or more pages. Apple senior advisor told me to try iPhoto, so I did while he was on the phone. No luck. Tried Photoshop CS4 to no avail. I finally just used a 3rd party application called SnapNDrag to take selected shots of the document (.png and .jpg), saved them and printed out each one. Very time consuming and not what I expect from Apple. But as the advisor said, Apple is moving to small product and away from desktop.
Canon says it's not the driver for the printer and Apple agreed.
So how are we to print legal documents that are larger than Apple allows? This dampens my desire for a medium format printer for my photos, since I have no idea how I would print them.
If need be, I'll just revert back to Leopard or switch to Windows. I have no loyalty to Apple when they take away so many things that made work easy and replace them with things I have no use for.
By the way, there is a secret to resizing in Preview's print options. You can't just type digits and …

When you upgrade to Windows 7 your Windows Mail will no longer work.
You can, from what I understand, upgrade to Windows Live Mail now and it will import your Windows Mail data.

Hello,
As a Mac user and minor maintenance man on XP machines for friends and family, pardon my ignorance on this Windows 7 issue.
I bought my father an Iomega portable 320GB HDD for Father's Day For his new HP machine with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. He wants to deny access to all but himself. Easy for me on a Mac. Been searching and all I can find is command line stuff that is well beyond his capabilities and I won't be here to take this into my own hands after a week. Nor do I want to go into command line for stuff he may need or want to change.
All I want is to set permissions for the external HDD to him and him only. He'll give the access info to my mother in case of emergency.
I've checked to see what format this Iomega is and it is only, by default, NTFS when attached to a Windows machine (haven't tried it on my Macs so I don't know what it would do then). Doesn't give the option to use FAT32. Manual documentation says No formatting needed for Windows, only OSX.

One more minor question if someone has time. I know how to Move, Not Copy nor make aliases, AKA shortcuts in OSX from one machine to another, but haven't figured what key(s) to press when dragging from his HP to the Iomega to just Move or Just copy. No shortcuts …

royng, please back up your claims if you say the Mac has viruses, then please tell us all what the virus is called, so we can look it up. I am an Apple-certified technician and I have not yet heard of this.

I am aware of a trojan (not virus) called MACDefender, which is easy to remove (disable services in activity monitor then trash the MACdefender file that is in applications, then reboot - voila!), but again, that is not a virus, even though when it is installed it says there is a virus (fake message to fool you in to thinking there is a problem).

MACDefender has a couple of variants, such as MACprotector, MACguard, and MACsecurity. They are all the same thing, and harmless unless you actually fall for it and provide your credit card number, in which case then you need to cancel your credit card immediately. Otherwise, all it does is puts gay porn on your screen. It will not damage your files, though.

Thanks for all that info. I got that trojan twice. But I have experienced Camino and Opera being hijacked two times last year. Had to trash the browsers twice to get them back to normal.

The only thing I can find that might work for you, if you haven't cleared the caches, is to type into Camino and Opera's address bar, about:cache and hit enter. This does not work in Safari. My Firefox cache was overflowing when I checked it this way.

As for showing invisible files, you can use this from Apple's site.

Or, download Onyx for free as well. It has the ability to show or hide invisible files.

Unfortunately, once you highlight an email in Mac Mail it opens. But you can see all the information you want by looking at the long header.
Right click on the Mail tool bar at the top of the page and click Configure. A new drop down window will open. Find the Long Header icon and drag it to the Mail tool bar.
When viewing an email you can click on that Long Headers icon and see the whole path and most anything else you need.

It depends on the browser you are using.
And, do you want to disable the pop up blocker, or get rid of pop ups by enabling it?

If using Safari, go to the menu bar, click Safari, look down the list and either block or unblock pop ups.

Some details of my machine and installed packages before proceeding further:

Mac OSX version: 10.6.6
Python version: Activestate Python 2.7.1
wxpython version: wxpython 2.8 (uses Carbon API hence limited to 32-bit mode arch only)

I installed wxPython2.8-osx-unicode-py2.7 from wxpython website using their .dmg installer file. This package uses the Carbon API and hence is limited to 32-bit mode only. I have to write my applications using "arch -i386" in order to import wx, and due to this limitation I am unable to import certain other packages likes "MySQLdb" which are not available in 32-bit mode. So, my best option is to uninstall wxpython 2.8 and install wxpython 2.9 because version 2.9 uses Cocoa API which has both 32-bit and 64-bit support.

I don't know how to uninstall wxpython2.8 on my Mac OSX. Can anyone please help me?

I see from another forum that you got your answer. Good for you. Hard to find answers to deeper OSX tech issues here as of late.

Yes, but you have to install over your existing OS with your original disk(s). Say you have a 10.6.3 or 10.6.0 disk. You install that and there is a page on Apple's site for you to then download 10.6.5. Do all updates except the one that would update you to 10.6.6. In other words, after reinstalling and installing the 10.6.5 combo update, then run Software update from the Apple logo in the upper left corner of Desktop. Make sure you uncheck the 10.6.6 option and update whatever else you want. Then check the update again, unchecking the 10.6.6 update.
Can't recall where the page is on their site. Here it is.

http://caminobrowser.org/

Doesn't get much easier than this. Pimp My Camino will let you personalize it, but I just find all that a bunch of clutter possibly leading to problems that you have to delete things until you find out what's causing the problem.
Maybe you Do need to do an Erase and Install, looking at all the problems you're having. Like the new one of no sound from your headphone port and your mention of clicking on links and not getting where you want to be.
I got some advice from a cpu and software 'senior advisor' at Apple Care, that had been a Windows user longer than I had been before switching to Apple. The less third party stuff, especially maintenance and cleaning utilities one puts on a Mac is better. Nothing like Windows that seems to be more geek friendly than user friendly, though the ignorant masses use Windows, and call me to fix their machines. I have to agree with him as my only local Mac friend has never used 3rd party utilities and has had no problems, unlike me who has tried many and had many problems.

Danarchy 16 Junior Poster

I've never had that problem with Onyx. Not sure why you are experiencing it. That company's program, Deeper, causes problems, so I dumped it.
I'd say update, but I think you're on 10.6.6. That may be an issue with Onyx. I didn't like 10.6.6 for application compatibility reasons so I went back to 10.6.5 and all is well again. I'll wait for 7-Lion and wait for about 6 months for Apple to work out the bugs.

Netshred X looks like what you want. Mireth has been around for a long time. I've never used any of their products, so I can't vouch for them.
Not sure why you want so much security in these areas, but with the government looking to invade anyway they can, it's probably a good idea these days. One wrong word can get them to start looking at you and from there, who knows what can happen? Whether guilty of something or completely innocent conversations and browsing of current events etcetera.
I should probably change my user name on here.

Danarchy 16 Junior Poster

Other than the methods you mentioned, Onyx can take care of that.

It will delete caches, temporary items and more.
And it's free.

Good luck.

royng,
Hello again from your other post on DOS.

I use Camino the most. Using it right now. It uses the same engine as Firefox, but is like a stripped down version of Firefox. Both Safari and Firefox use way too much memory for my tastes.
Opera is my second choice and use it often. I only use Safari and Firefox if I'm having trouble viewing certain sites that are overloaded with Flash and Java.
Tried Flock years ago and wasn't impressed enough to keep it.
Chrome has so many vulnerabilities posted often on Secunia's site, that I just don't even want to try it.

Good luck.

Danarchy 16 Junior Poster

royng,
Sorry I didn't reply yet. I don't check my Yahoo mail often enough and just found all my DaniWeb emails in my Junk folder.

For what it's worth, the only firewall I'd trust is Apple's built in firewall.
I don't even use it as I've seen no need to do so.

Net Barrier X and Lil Snitch are the only ones on that site that I've heard of and read about. I have Lil Snitch on my Macbook but it can be very annoying watching all the activity and having to close it's window all the time. I'm sure there are settings for it somewhere, but as little as I use that machine, I just haven't checked into it further. It does what it says, and I don't recall reading anything bad about it.

I'd suggest trying Apple's firewall. If your Mac doesn't want to open something, there's usually a good reason. And if zipeg or the unarchiver can't open them, I wouldn't want to. Just do a search for those and you will find them.

I looked at a few others that I've never heard of on that site and many, if not most are old and meant for PPC Macs, not Intel Macs like you have. That's probably the reason they won't open.

Just my opinion. If you use facebook and don't have all your security and privacy settings at the hilt, Lil Snitch will drive you nuts from all …

Danarchy 16 Junior Poster

Welcome Roy,

Never heard of a DOS mode on a Mac either. Maybe with Windows installed? Totally ignorant of that realm.
You can use Zipeg, Stuffit Expander and The Unarchiver for free. Those are just the ones I'm aware of.
If the zipped files are Mac compatible, any one of these should open them.

"I suppose if you are totally new to computers and have no clue what software you need its a great marketing tool,".
That's it in my opinion. And maybe a bit of information mining for marketing.

I posted, some time back, looking for help on the Camino and Opera "hijacking" issue. Plenty looked but no ideas.
Both browsers went to the same bogus site every time they were started, while Safari and Firefox went anywhere I pointed them.

I started on Windows and swiftly moved to Apple within a year of dealing with Windows security.
Now I only maintain friends' Windows machines.

I don't trust Apple as far as security patches much either. I've not updated from 10.6.5 to 10.6.6 since I've found no sure way to disable the App Store program, even though there are security fixes and graphics upgrades; the latter I need badly on my Mini.
I never allow Apple to automatically install updates. Same as I'd like to tell all my Windows user friends, but it's too complicated for them to learn to update Windows on their own, so I just tell them they have the option and then put them on auto update at their request.

I was not aware of the secret security update for 10.6.4 or I don't recall it. If either Microsoft or Apple secretly add security fixes, I'm okay with it as long as it's not done to juggle numbers for marketing. I'm the only Mac user I know that has had two browsers hijacked. I fixed the problem on my own, but I constantly hear from my Windows user friends that they have some malware problems that I then fix for them.

Go to Dell and look for mouse drivers for Mac OS X under Support. It should have all basic functions out of the box.
Some drivers for mice, although said to be Snow Leopard compatible, are not or not very compatible.
I have an $80 Logitech laser mouse that if I install their driver, freezes my machine after a while of use and renders it unusable until I either archive and install the operating system or erase and install same.
Such a shame that correspondence with Logitech on this issue left me feeling that they don't care and are not going to try to fix their driver.
So, make sure, if he finds and installs a mouse driver, that he backs up all before installation of the driver.

Good luck.

I had the same issue some weeks ago, with my Mini. My Macbook worked fine. Both were on the same Trendnet router. My ISP doesn't have any support for Mail.app since outsourcing help to the Philippines. Trendnet 24/7 service dismissed it as a computer problem at first. Many Applecare techs wracked their brains on this one. Finally talked to a senior tech at Trendnet and he solved the problem by adjusting settings in the router from his end. Whenever I tried to go to my ISPs webmail, my browser would take me to the router log in page.
All is well as long as I'm at home using my ISP. If away and using some other ISP, all bets are off for Mail.app as one Applecare senior advisor told me he has the same issues with mail.app when using different servers other than his own.
Good luck.

Disk Warrior is a great tool and helps you to manage the data in your Mac drive well. As a tool it will take space to manage your data in a proper manner and for failsafe replacement mush space is needed. But I have noticed in your post that, Disk Warrior is every time asking for more contiguous space, that means the space you have provided before is not utilized properly and that can happen due to one reason that is the contiguous space still have data whose address is not freed.
So, it is better that you erase the complete section of the contiguous space using a good wipe Mac tool, so that memory should be cleaned properly. Then use that piece of memory, I am sure Disk Warrior will not ask for more space there after.
All the best!

Thanks for letting us know that Disk Warrior still doesn't address this issue. I switched from it to Tech Tool Pro 4 and now TTP 5 and it takes care of the contiguous space issue in it's Tools functions. So you don't need to buy another utility.

Hello,
This could be embarrassing but at my age and experience in life I have little to be embarrassed about.
I got the above url in my address bars of both Opera and Camino. Not Safari or Firefox. Nothing I've tried after reading what little there is about it affecting Macs
shows any trojan or malware. Those being DNS Changer app and iAntivirus.
It seems to be just a browser hijacker. No matter what I type in the search or address bars or copy/paste or click link or open the affected browsers, I get redirected to a longer address starting with dnsadvantage.com and takes me to a page that has many S.E Asian language suggested sites.
So far I've been successful ridding my machine of it by trashing the browsers and downloading them again.
I'm not downloading any codecs or anything to view things. Just your typical browsing. That that some men and women do. And I'm fairly selective of where I do that browsing. I've only gotten this on my '09 Macbook not my 1.83GHz Mini that gets used much more than the Macbook
Any ideas and or thoughts on this? Other than to become puritan.

Thanks in advance.

Spotlight works great for quick searches, but I don't think that spotlight is what you are looking for. Try search (apple f). This utility will allow you to create any search criteria and either save it to your finder window or place it in a folder so your finder window does not get too cluttered.

I have to agree about Spotlight. It rarely finds what I'm looking for.

I have similar problems with Camino 1.6.7 and Flash, depending on the site. I cannot view my email on my ISP's web page. Just keeps opening their welcome page.
I reset Camino and some sites I had issues with were fine, but not my ISP's.

You can find this app on Camino's site or a search engine.
