I'd just like to mention I am one of those such people. My computer crashed due to malware, and then, after getting it back running again (courtesy of DMR), I joined a malware community/training organization. Best decision I've made in a while.

Agreed. However, I still feel that they are effective for the common American population.

I mean, since when has the American public cared about facts? :icon_wink:

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Agreed with TheNNS.

Also realize that, for it to become "a popular item," it has to be expensive and cliche; otherwise, it wouldn't be "the cool thing to have."

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Agreed. :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Very good article, joe.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

One quick question out of curiosity:

Why are ya using FF, and not Camino, on youre Mac?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I'm going to have to get one of these eventually, but the price is crazy now.

I see a bright future for the iPhone. :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I know another bonus that iTunes had that others didn't is that its reputable.

I dunno about anyone else, but my folks arn't the type that throw credit card numbers to obscure websites, and I think that's partly the issue here.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Using a third-party ripping tool for CDs is often annoying as their is no standard ripping tool.

Mabe I'm wrong, but there's definitely one on my PC. ;)

The sales of CDs are usually to music pirates, or older people who don't want to jump on the technology bandwagon (yet).

I would just say that yet. I, for one am neither a pirate, nor older, yet still like buying CDs. I like the fact that I have a hard copy of what I just bought. If my entire hard drive (for any reason) was wiped the day after I bought from iTunes, I would still have a hard copy of my music.

I can only hope that Samsung loses in this lawsuit.

Roger that. :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I havn't been a big fan of Java lately.

  1. Something like 3 upgrades lately in the past 3 months
  2. 'Update' monitor that runs on startup that does little more than waste energy
  3. Upgrading to each version doesn't uninstall nor build upon the earlier version. This usually isn't a problem, but its a big deal when you're dealing with a room full of computers.
'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Well said.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Very nice point expressed in that last paragraph.

However, one aspect of it all that wasn't touched on is the new strategy by certain record companies to prevent music from being coped into any other form. When that happens, most of the quality of the CD is lost.

IMO, this violates the 'single use' license because it limits making copies for yourself as well.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

In one sense, I would disagree with it. I personally think that a surprise opening to the public encourages mass-buying.

Take the iPod for example. From what I recall, it wasn't highly advertised when first released. Then, compare it to its initial success.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Well said, everybody.

I've always wondered the basics on quantum computing....

>Mac doesn't have updates

Err...they've had a buncha updates pretty recently actually (I own one among several PCs) ;)

But yes, I can't agree with ya more. WGA has become laughingstock among even semi-knowledgeable IT circles.

However, my view of the patches themselves differs pretty dramatically then te view shown here, but I'm not one to argue. :cheesy:

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

That looks pretty phenominal :)

Except, I took the easy way out--I gots my own server space ;)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Toulinwoek-

WELL written, and I can't agree with ya more :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Very true...

I'm not a gambler myself, but hey, we have a God-given right of "the pursuit of happiness" (according to the Founding Fathers, at least)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Seconding what he said above :cheesy:

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Excellent-written article I might begin with.

Secondly, I can't agree with ya more. Also, cell phones are probably one of the easist pieces of electronic equipment to destroy..even worse then iPods...

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Heh, sounds good to me.

Actually, sounds like a buncha drunk college guys to me...;)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I second it. Just because a company has at one time released a program, it needn't constantly protect it while its still in common use.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

perhaps it’s time we all started taking online privacy a whole lot more seriously.

Can't agree with ya more. And ya, I agree with Comatose. One of the better articles in a while (not that the other ones were bad.)

By the way, do ya kno of any other sites this guy posts at?

Thanks.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I see (and agree).

It seems to appear that many of the changes that have occured apply more to the 'lay people' then anything else. And I guess this makes sense, especially since they are the buying power in the market :cheesy:

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Don't kno if you'll see this Davey, but have ya been currently testing it? If so, whaddya think?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Agreed.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

No, I disagree jwenting.

Toulinwoek has a completely legit argument.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Can't agree with ya more.

By the way, I wanna mention that I've been reading your articles lately, and I'm liking the writing. Good Job. :)

Thanks.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Roger that jwenting :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Definititely take the ACT...I personally did FAR better on it compared to the SAT.

Tips:

1) BE SURE to bring a snack and water to consume during breaks.
2) Bring a watch, because the proxy place isn't required to provide a clock.
3) Don't freak out during the Science section. ALL of the information you need to know to answer the questions can be found in the text provided.
4) In the Reading sections, the answers require a lot less interpreting compared to the SAT. If you find a quesiton that you can't immediailly answer, chances are it can be found directly in the text.

I've just noticed the user 'rgtaylor' (http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/member153332.html,) appears to have been banned from daniweb, was there a reason for this other than the reply in this topic?

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/post368478.html#post368478

if there's more to it than that, fair enough and i'm not asking for details; but if this post is the only reason, that's a bit harsh is it not?

i ask only because, in my previous interactions with rgtaylor personally, he seems like a knowledgable and helpful person, and the reply in that thread isn't so severe, although it's clearly in an angry tone.

as in title, please delete this thread, or otherwise let me know if discussion of banned members/reasons for banning isn't allowed, (i can't see anything on the daniweb page 'o policies that says it isn't, but i'm well aware that this could be seen as asking something that's not really any of my business)

as i hope i've stressed, this is a question not a complaint; was that post the only reason rgtayor was banned? if not, ok, you(s) know what you're doing; if so, is that really a bannable offence? daniweb rules say a 5 point infraction is given for a first-offence personal insult.

First off, let me say that I am not knowledgeable as to why he was banned.

However, several things to point out.

  1. He could have had his infracting post deleted.
  2. He could have done something via a PM or email.
'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Just for curiosity's sake, why Hillary?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Chavez is in Venezuela, not Brazil.
Sugarcane doesn't come from Venezuela though (oil does), it comes from Cuba (another country not very popular and for good reasons).

Ethanol btw can be used to drive an engine, but it would need to be a different engine and would have to be far more massive to produce a similar power output than does a gasoline powered engine due to the lower energy content of the product.

I've already addressed the production problems of the stuff, and the reasons why wind, solar, tidal, and hydrogen aren't viable alternatives due to their environmental impact.
And that's not even taking into account the massive areas of land that'd need to be relegated to the wind and solar farms to cover energy needs.
It's been estimated that if we covered Europe with wind turbines at their most efficient spacing and covered the ground between them with solar cells we'd meet at most about 30% of our energy needs, and that would be on a good day with plenty of wind AND sun, days which are quite rare as usually there's either sun OR wind.

*align fingers away from palm, slap face* I feel dumb. :icon_wink:

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Yes, that was me that mentioned ethanol. If it's not energy efficient then why is it included in the Energy Policy Act of 1992?

One reason it's mentioned is because it's a home-grown product. In other words, it's derived from corn (grown in the US), and processed in the US.

Also, since when have politicians accurately passed laws that made sense? :icon_wink:

sk8ndestroy14 commented: Arg, politicians +2
'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Someone mentioned ethanol as an alternative fuel source up in another post.

Again, this is a misconception. While ethanol can be used as a fuel additive instead of gasoline, ethanol is not energy efficient. It takes more energy put in through processing then it produces. In nearly every case, this energy put in comes from fossil fuels.

True alternative sources are an extract from sugarcane (which the U.S. isn't currently looking at because of the problems with Chávez in Brazil (where most sugarcane is grown)). Solar power and wind energy are also good alternatives.

What our country needs as a whole is a grassroots rebellion geared on energy change.

Edit: Hydrogen cells are also an excellent alternative.

Why does everybody care so much? This is the Geek's Lounge. It's meant to just hang out and relax. If you want to talk about the original post in the thread then make a post about it and others will follow you. It's not that big a deal.

Better yet, why not just make a new thread for the off-topic comment. Then, the stuff relevant to the OP stays in the thread it's supposed to be in...

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Take a look at the member my link aims at. Then take a look at his recent posts. I'm sure you'll understand.

Haha, I definitely caught it, and all I can say is that I've ignored him as well.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Agreed. However, not filling up on one day will not do any good. All it means is that people will fill up either the day before or day after, causing sales increases on these days.

Chalk up a vote for enabling color.

Correct color usage can greatly improve the clarity of a post, especially when one wants the post to appear simple. A good usage of color can often be found in the spyware section.

But again, does feedback even matter here anymore?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Oh I see.
But I meant where does it talk about Christians believing the earth was at the center of the world?

I think I understand? It was Roman Catholic Dogma to believe in geocentrism. (Was that your question?)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

No where in the Bible, the prophets say how God create anything. Only that it was created and that's it.

Genesis 1:1 "In the Beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
:icon_rolleyes:

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Where in Christianity's history does it talk about their look on the Earth and Sun?

"Psalm 93:1, Psalm 96:10, and Chronicles 16:30 state that "the world is firmly established, it cannot be moved." Psalm 104:5 says, "the Lord set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved." Ecclesiastes 1:5 states that "the sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises."
