Hi There,

Welcome to Daniweb!

Have you always had this problem or is this a recent thing?

UrbanKhoja 89 Practically a Posting Shark Featured Poster

This is actually a bit of myth, some of our security expert members may be able to better explain it but essentially it's two fold.

Unix based systems differ from Windows based systems, so generally a virus does not spread as easily.

Secondly, Windows is the dominate system (although OSx is gaining ground) which makes it more of a viable target when producing a virus whether it's for underhanded commercial gain, corporate espionage or just misguided individuals with too much time and a misspent childhood.

When we think of what a virus actually is, and lose the stereotype and the hype, the majority of computer devices have the ability to be infected and/or compromised from next generation fridges to mobile phones.

Hi there,

I'm guessing you've already solved this, but you need a servo. Which in essence is a motor that can be remotely operated and finely controlled. These vary in both analogue and digital, and varying torque ability.

Maplin do a nice board which allows you to connect a number of servos, program them and ultimately control them.

The type of servo to use will depend on what you want to do, should you wish to use 2.4Ghz then a digital servo is preferable. If the arm will need to grip and lift, then a high torque servo with metal gears and maybe ball raced will be best.

Standard motors can be used, but this depends on your robotics ability as they'll require more work and modifying to work as you want.

Hope this helps

Hi There,

Welcome to Daniweb!

I imagine you've no doubt solved this by now, but here goes just in case.

With any form of power issue on laptop, it's always worth trying a trusty old ATX reset first.
Although basic and slightly boring, it does solve most issues.

You'll need to take all cables out, (external cables) and any sources of power such as the PSU and battery. Note, the PSU must be unplugged not just turned off.

Once all disconnected, you'll need to hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Before plugging the power and battery back in

I'm guessing you've no doubt solved this by now; but it's always worth cleaning and checking each cable and component first. Then try adding back in one at a time, the simple power of elimination should allow you to see which item is causing the internal havoc on your machine.

Hope this helps

Interesting article you have here, are there many A4/3 domestic thermal printers available yet?

UrbanKhoja 89 Practically a Posting Shark Featured Poster

Hi There,

Welcome to the world of Daniweb!

Which OS are you using? If you're using a MS OS, then there may be an easy fix for this. As the microphone may have been disabled (although rare, this is more common in laptops with built-in microphones as they sometimes conflict with external microphones).

You'll need to boot up the computer (we are of course, assuming you're using MS) and open up the Control Panel. (Start > Control Panel). You'll then have a new window open, you'll need to select 'Hardware & Sound' (you may need to switch to classic view to see this option).

Once you've opened 'Hardware & Sound', look at the 'Sound' heading (Roughly the third option). To the far right will be an option for 'Manage audio devices' - open this up.

You'll then see a new window with four tabs, select 'Recording'. From here you'll see all you devices (often worth right clicking and select 'show disabled devices' as this will also show anything that has been disabled).

You ought to see a green sound bar next to your device, it should adjust if you clap etc., if not you'll need to check whether the device is enabled and set as default.

Hope that helps,

Darren

From experience I'd avoid the free variants such as Avast! and AVG, although tempting as it can save you upwards of £60 they rarely detect everything. There are benefits and drawbacks to most of the products available, so it's worth looking for one that matches your needs.

NOD 32 is powerful but Norton 360 has more features as well as home network monitoring.

Having used the final retail version of the new iPad earlier today, and as an owner of an iPad 2; first impressions I'd have to be honest and say I would struggle to distinguish the two if asked based on appearances only.

It releases tomorrow at the same price points previously used for the iPad 2, which may heighten its appeal.

With some stores believed to be receiving between 25-50% of the units that would need to fulfil anticipated sales it could be an interesting day.

For those that haven't yet held the final version, it is slightly thicker than the iPad 2 and the sides are slightly more curved. Although it's only slightly thicker, it is noticeable.

Whether it was just the lighting in the office or whether they've modified the lens I'm not sure, but the front camera did appear to have more of a blue tint than my iPad 2.

Although there have been rumours of it being released with an infamous 'iOS6', the one I had was still running standard iOS5.1

The screen was most certainly clearer; the colours did also appear more vibrant and lifelike and really came into its own when the camera was used.

Although I was aware of the internal changes; and the screen aside, I couldn't see that much of a difference.

I know there has been all sorts of hype and excitement since the announcement, but I can't help but feel it's …

BlackBerry Vs iPhone?

I know it’s a question that is not only as old as time itself, but has been answered many times. But as a BlackBerry user migrating to iPhone I thought I’d have a go myself.

You don’t have to look too far to stumble across numerous reviews, opinions and comparisons between the two, and mostly biased towards one or the other. So I’ve tried to keep to my personal experiences of the two. I’ve been using the BlackBerry Torch 9800 with OS6 (V6.0.0.668) and the iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1 – both with the latest updates.

I decided to focus on the key points I looked at when comparing them myself;

1). Battery Life: Despite the BlackBerry getting more use (I’ve yet to setup my work email on the iPhone) it still gave significantly more battery life. After a full charge and with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned off, the iPhone managed to just last 14 hours under moderate use before requiring a charge. The Torch however, was able to last two and half days.

2). Emails: The iPhone does have a nice clean email client, and is relatively simple to switch between accounts if you have more than one setup. The search facility also seems to work a lot better on the iPhone, giving you the option to continue the search on the server if required. The BlackBerry utilises separate icons for each account, which is useful for those who like …

Hi there,

My specialty is FM so I'll touch that first. Once you have your building you would need not only a HVAC system but also a BMS such a Trend to run the system. Generally you would also have redundant A/C capacity should a faulty occur with the BMS (they are known for being temperamental).

Does the building have a sufficient power supply? Depending on the type of building and the scale, do you need to implement an additional phase or additional capacity?

Fire systems, there are often linked with the BMS so that ventilation is controlled in the event of a fire.

As well as relevant signage, emergency lighting etc - all of which (and the above) need to be to the correct code.

In the event of a power failure, do you have back-up cooling systems? Will the equipment dissipate heat effectively?

Security and access control, how will you control access to the data centre? Swipe cards, mag locks, keys, multi locks, biometric, RFID. CCTV? Local or remote?

An awful lot to think about, but at present you have far too many variables, once you know the demographic and estimated number of end users you'll be able to cost the equipment, the space you'll need, the building to accommodate it, the staff to main it, the insurers to underwrite it, the systems to protect it and so on.

The cost will add up also, a basic Trend BMS panel …

Hi there,

There are ways, of course. But it depends on what you're hoping to do? Or better still, what you need to do? If you merely need to access the second computer then a software approach would suffice.

If it's a university campus for instance, a number of them implement IT network policies that prevent certain things.

Hi there,

You've said you're using Windows 7, depending on the manufacturer of the hardware it would generally support hard disk recovery so you should be able to perform a full destructive recovery that way should you desire.

If you run ipconfig in command prompt, does it list an ip address next to default gateway?

Had you changed or installed anything prior to when the devices ceased to function?

UrbanKhoja 89 Practically a Posting Shark Featured Poster

Hi there,

Your initial question is a little vague, are you simply trying to reinforce the wireless security in the connection between your laptop and your router?

This can be achieved fairly easily without any additional software or downloads, rather than WEP I'd recommend WPA2 PSK which is generally fair more secure. You can also enable MAC addressing / MAC address filtering for additional privacy.

This ought to suffice for the majority of uses, anything requiring more enhanced security than this would normally warrant a physical cable connection. As no matter how good your wireless security may be, it's far from rocket science to overcome.

Hope this helps,

Darren

UrbanKhoja 89 Practically a Posting Shark Featured Poster

Hi Rushi,

In short, yes you can. So long as the device in question has a removable antenna, as a couple (a few Thompson and Netgears for instance) have fixed antennas that cannot be removed. The socket is usually standard so any after market one ought to work.

Although it's looks as if you're using a basic wireless G router, first up I'd replace that with one of N standard as this will give your network greater ranger and throughput potential (will always depend on the cards installed in the devices you connect). Second, you can try dual band. A standard router works in the 2.4Ghz region which gives great range but doesn't offer amazing bandwidth, 5Ghz however is of higher spectrum and thus offers far higher bandwidth in comparison.

Hope this helps,

Darren

Afternoon All,

I've been looking at different remote support options for the BlackBerry, we all have them at home at Mum is forever having to ask for help! So I started a little websearch for the best one, although we've already got something similar for all our laptops and desktops; it's much more of a challenge to find something for a mobile device - let alone a BlackBerry!

So I was rather impressed when I found Ignition, although it has been aroud for some time, it now has full support for the BlackBerry (although it's unknown whether it'll support the awaited OS6).

It was able to give me every piece of information about our devices, and even take full control of them. Not only over the mobile network but it worked just as well over Wi-Fi and UMA.

The only issue I could see was that it didn't give you much control over the running processes, only displayed them. A great service other than that!

Hi,
You could be running a $1000.00 antivirus program and still get a virus. Give Trend housecall and malwarebytes a shot and at least you will be fairly sure your machine is clean.
The best way to check a machine is to use a boot up virus detector like UBCD (see my signature) and check your machine where everything is open to inspect. When windows is running a virus can still hide (that is look safe) from a virus detector.

Evening, Bob

I'll have a look at that tomorrow when I've got a bit more time and I'll let you know; thanks for that.

Hi,
First, try moving your desk further away from the window. lol

Try, uninstalling again but this time when you reinstall, install in a different location (New folder, My documents), if you have, a different drive or even partition would be good. You could also try downloading it again, in case there is a bug in the installation file or even download an earlier version and install that first.
If you are still having problems after that, I would look at downloading and running Trend Housecall, Microsoft security essentials, malwarebytes and Ccleaner.

Good luck

Thanks for your suggestions, I'm running the latest version of Symantecs Norton 360 (I've tried it with tha uninstalled). Cleaned the registry etc, but there's one thing that I've found that may be causing it.

On one of Microsoft$ help pages, it suggests restarting msxml.dll via command prompt, however, I always get an error at this point.

I'll try and add a screen shot of it if I can.

UrbanKhoja 89 Practically a Posting Shark Featured Poster

In order to connect to the configuration page, your computer must be going directly through the router via either wireless lan or ethernet.

Once you're connected to your router, you'll be able to navigate to your router's IP address. (CMD > ipconfig - locate 'default gateway'. The address here is the IP of your router)

Belkin routers usually display a login page, unless you've set a passwork leave the box blank.

Afternoon all,

Having a bit of an issue with messenger, any help would be great before it slowly sends me insane!

Brief history of the issue, was getting another error code, so after a week I Googled it and saw copious suggestions that I solve remove it then reinstall.

Having removed Messenger, it would not reinstall as apparently I already had it on my laptop. Used Zapmessenger, installed great.

Went to login for the first time on new Messenger, and got the 8007007e error message. Tried a different login, same error. (both logins work fine on my BlackBerry though).

Googled it, ran sfc, ran zapmessenger, restarted, ran the windows removal tool, reinstalled - same error.

Then did the above but also utilising some pactches on Jonathon Kay's Messenger blog, same error.

Tried reinstalling again, same error.

Now getting rather concerned, partly due to my desk being so close to a window!

Any advice would be great.

Evening all,

I've seen a number of cases recently where the disc drive ceases to function (mainly in laptops for some reason), usually evident by the icon no longer being displayed within My Computer.

Seems to be when someone either updates or installs a Symantec (mostly Norton 360) product.

To resolve it?

Open up the Windows Registry Editor:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
>SYSTEM
>>CurrentControlSet
>>>Control
>>>>Class

Select the entry entitled: (May be easier to look for the 965, usually this entry is about tenth from the top)
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

If you open up this entry you'll see an item named 'Upper Filters'; if you select and delete this then restart you machine. Quite often you may see an item named 'LowerFilters' - this should also be deleted if you have it.

Once you have deleted both (if you have both) and restarted, you should find that your drive works as per normal.

Hope this helps,

Darren

It's a slight worry I know, I've noticed that you can download Windows Movie Maker direct from their site as even the Ultimate version of 7 will not come with it unlike Vista.

The "Fix" option in photo viewer was a feature that I like and found ever useful, does anyone know if they're planning to bring this back?

I used the new Media Center for the first time today, whilst the install was slow and unresponsive. I was rather pleases to see a "Text" option added to the far left corner of the screen, I personally don't use text; however I'm aware that a number of people do. Even the four coloured interactive buttons even have a home there too!

Although it seems every other day that I'm informed that Windows Explorer has failed and will have to restart along will some other equally depressing message.

Dazza

UrbanKhoja 89 Practically a Posting Shark Featured Poster

Well I've finally been able to get hold of my license key, although I had to install Safari as Explorer was having a bad day.

I'm failing to see the improvement with 7, and also noticed a couple of nice features that I was used to in Vista are nowhere to be found within 7.

One major factor that is starting to annoy me is that 7 doesn't currently support Norton 360 - you'll just get an even more annoying message box informing you of this and advising you to check online.

One little thing that did make me chuckle a bit though was the re-thought shutdown buttons, when they launched Vista a MS Rep told me they had been arranged in a "logical" fashion which would promote "ease of use". So much so that they done away with it?!

Evening / Morning all!

Been a while I know, but I finally got round to installing my copy of Windows 7. Yes I'll openly admit there may have been a slight climax (like a small child at christmas), but having installed Microsofts latest offering I'm left wondering if I've just wasted my evening?

It's evident that some bright spark has found a way to keep his MS bonus in line by rebranding the ailing Vista. Even the help files during the install of 7 are actually borrow from Vista, most of the menus are the same typical layout.

To be perfectly honestly I had been rather looking forward to actually trying it for myself and having a good peruse over the much awaiting offering, but I'm left wondering where all the hype came from?

Although I'll have to admit that I do rather like the new boot up screen, major improvement over the failed Vista GUI.

Even though I've done all the updates; explorer still decides to restart everytime I feel the need to navigate toward Gmail - slightly annoying to say the least!

I've seen a few posts on here regarding peoples thoughts on how Windows 7 looks a lot like Linux; without disrespect to the authors of those blogs I really can't see any. Mac however is a different story, the new desktop is almost consanguineous to that of a mac - the new layout could easily pass for the half brother …
