You must be yelling pretty loudly because I think you are being heard all the way over to PFO. I noticed the some spammers there are creating just one thread and posting about 20-30 spam messages to it. Makes it easy for me to ban them and delete their spam :)

I agree, I thought this will provoke some POSITIVE feedback and not a lot of mockery...;)

I must say though, the thread was started when we got hit by the Russian spammer community! Maybe why we all got the remarks about spam etc...:)

Come on members, I have seen plenty of "complaints" and "suggestions" last year. If you think you have something POSITIVE to add here, write away, Dani is awaiting your suggestions AND criticism, I am sure.

The first thing that popped into my head was a good community, nearly all my Java problems get's solved by:

Now for some criticism, I always have to wait for the web page to completely load before I can click on anything else. Which get's annoying because I always have to press the stop button before I click any other links and sometimes the page doesn't even load fully, I element missing and it doesn't completely load which makes me have to press the stop button.

What browser are you using? try Google Chrome and see if that fixes the problem because its faster than IE. Don't know about FF because I have not used it for a couple years now.

IE is too terrible but my stupid family want me to keep it on there because 'it came with the laptop', jeez. IE wouldn't even let me watch videos without installing QuickTime after I intalled iTunes.

I use Opera, seems to be the most useful one for me.
I also have FireFox but it's too slow and I can't be bothered to remove it... Maybe i'll do it now.

I've tried Google Chrome but the page doesn't load as fast as Opera if you have a bad internet connection (only for this laptop for some reason, I have 2 and the one about not removing IE laptop is my new one with Windows 7 which I don't prefer over XP).

Nah, I can deal with this problem and it might just be me and my laptop.
I don't think there's a difference between the browsers on a computer or a laptop though.

A lot of people will disagree with you. HappyGeek wouldn't be caught dead without Chrome (he has stated that on more than one occasion).

I actually have some very minor but real things on my wish list:

Group one wishlist: Who's reading this thread:

• Easily see who is watching a thread while I'm in 'advanced editor' mode.
• That same information available on any page of a multi-page thread
• That information dynamically updated on the page I'm viewing when it changes on the server. (!)

Group two wishlist: Composition tools

• Put an [I[B][/B]CODE] button on the quick reply form
• A [THREAD] button that would parse the full permalink URL in another post (from my other browser window) and do the right thing to make an internal link.
• As above, but a [POST] button.
• A link easily visible near the reply box that opens a new window showing the available BB codes. And, another thought, maybe an option to open another menu bar with widgits, that like the [CODE] button, insert the tags for you.

That is surely enough of that...

Some more thoughts:

-Second the (CODE) button in the quick reply window.

-The (THREAD) button, in my dream world, would show a list of recently-visited threads to choose from, or accept a pasted URL. I'm not sure what the corresponding ideal behavior for (POST) would be, but probably selecting a thread from the recently visited list, and then a post from that thread would be the Right Thing.
That's in the dream world, though.

• A code-sniffer. Scan posts for some hallmarks of code-like character sequences, and pop up a dialog if they're found: "It looks like you might be posting code without code tags. Do you want to go back and put in code tags?" There's probably a finite number of REs that could be specified to catch some acceptable percentage of code postings.

• Failing that, a user's first N posts should have a confirm dialog that specifically calls their attention to the use of code tags and allows them to return to the post to put them in. Something like:
  "Thank you for posting to Daniweb. Here's a preview of your post.
  Daniweb posts use BBCode formatting. Click here to learn about BBCode.
  Any code in your post should be surrounded by code-tags. Click here to learn about code-tags. Click here to go back and fix your formatting."
  N, I'd think would be under 10 - probably if four or six exposures didn't do the job, more wouldn't help.

-Disable all of the really annoying smiley icons. If I wanted to read a badly-drawn comic book, I'd buy a copy of Archie and Jughead or something. If nothing else, at least let me disable display of smiley icons when I'm reading a thread.

+2: What a good idea. When I send a newbie a PM that mentions the (CODE) button and using the 'thread is solved' link to close off the discussion cleanly, it never takes more than one time. Of course that's a PM. ... So.

• I wonder if it would be reasonable to use a heuristic like: OP has posts in fewer than N threads, and this is the first one OP has started (or OP has never yet marked a thread 'solved') in a programming forum, and it's been 10 times longer than the average wait between posts (on that thread) and the thread isn't marked solved: Send an auto-generated message. Probably only in the programming forums, since in a forum such as this one, I'd expect most threads are never 'solved'.

+1 on turning off the annoying smileys when reading.

Some more ideas -

Enable the reading of the "go to last post" in a new browser window. At the moment you can only open it in the current window, a bit frustrating when you need to only read the last post and then have to use the back button to go back to the forum you were in.

When selecting a private message from your email, cancel the popup from the first window that you have opened. If there was a lot of replies on a subject, you have to scroll all the way to the top to disable the private message popup, this after I have already opened it up from my email.

I find smiley's quite usable, it shows the state of mind the op was in when posted a reply, especially if it could be interpreted as a nasty comment.:)

Place a "Is this thread solved" under the "flag bad post" and "post reply" for the OP. I'm sure if this is right under his nose, they might actually start marking threads as solved...

Just right click and select "Open in new window / new tab / etc".
