Hello.. I read through the site and saw where a couple of people have been helped with IE redirect problems. Well, I am in need of your help as I am having the same problem with my PC. Everytime I click on a link in the browser it takes me everywhere other than where I want to go. I have followed your steps and below I will post my HIJackthis log. What should I delete? Any help you can give would be appreciated and my wife and I have been dealing with this for about a month.

Does anything stand out to you? What should I do?

Thanks, ELove

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).

You have a couple of nasties lurking in your log. First I would like you to do the following;

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

I ran ComboFix but it keeps stopping after running its stage checks and the screen says "Deleting Files/Folders:" . It never leaves this screen (I ran it twice and waited about 2 hours each time). What do I do now?

Try running it in safe mode first. Use the administrators account.
If you still have problems, try this;
Please download and install AVG antispyware tool

  • Close all other Applications Select language click Ok
  • Click I Agree
  • Click next
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish
  • Wait and AVG antispyware will open to the main screen automatically.
  • Wait again a few minutes and AVG antispyware Should Auto update itself. If it doesn't click update at top of screen.
  • It is very important that you get updated
  • When updating has finished. Close AVG antispyware.

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

  • Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear use arrow up to highlight
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.
  • For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: HERE

You MUST manage to get into Safe Mode for the fix to work.

Make sure to close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while AVG antispyware performs its scan!

  • Run AVG antispyware.
  • Click on scanner at top of AVG antispyware screen.
  • Click on Settings.
  • Under How to Act click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine.
  • Under How to scan all boxes should be selected.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software all boxes should be selected.
  • On right side under Reports: click on Do not automatically generate report after every scan.
  • Under What to scan select scan every file.
  • Click On scan Tab.
  • Click on Complete system scan.
  • Let the program scan the machine It can take awhile give it time.
  • When scan has finished at bottom of screen click Apply all Actions.
  • Click Save report
  • Click Save Report as (Save as window's screen should pop up.)
  • Click desktop.
  • Click Save.
  • Exit AVG antispyware.

Reboot back to normal mode.
Post the log here.

I dont know what Im doing wrong here.. I did get ComboFix to run, but it did not save a log. Atleast, I cant find where it did. But it ran and then rebooted my system automatically and that was the end. Also, when I turned my Virus Scanner back on it recongnized ComboFix as a virus. Is that normal? Below is an update Hijackthis log. Please help me take care of the IE redirect because it is wrecking my brain :) Thanks so much.

The log should be found in the C directory.

Download the HostsXpert.
Run it and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.
Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it.

Im sorry but Im new at this.. can you explain to me what "Restore Original Hosts" means? Also, How do I know if I have a custom host or not?

There is a chance that the redirects are being caused by an entry in your hosts file. The hosts file is a file on your pc that you can add to to act as an ad blocker, site blocker etc. It can also be used by certain types of malware to direct you to certain sites. Every time you use your browser, it checks first with the hosts file.
If you had a custom hosts file, you would know?

Thanks for the explanation. I followed your directions to "Restore Original Hosts". The redirects are still happening. What do I do next?

Did you manage to locate the combofix log? It should be in the root of the drive. eg; C:\Combofix.txt

Below is the Combofix.txt :

ComboFix 07-12-15.5 - Owner 2007-12-15 9:23:13.3 - NTFSx86
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.115 [GMT -5:00]
Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Software\ComboFix.exe
* Created a new restore point
.

That is all the file said.. is that normal? I have noticed other users combofix file with more information.

The log should be longer than that. I don't know what is happenng there. You're not the only one either. I have seen this a few times now since the author updated it.
What about a log from the AVG antispyware scan you did?

Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. Right click on the download link and select Save Target As. Save it to the desktop or to a folder in a permanent directory. It generates a log which will be created in the same folder you are running it from. Please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

OK, below is the Silent Runner log. Also, let me know if you want me to run another AVG spyware and where will I find that log file as well. Do you see anything here in this Silent Runner log that looks wrong:

1. Please open Notepad

  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\ibspsnkx.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next replyafter you re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix:

  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

Please take note:

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

I have been searching different sites for about 30 minutes with NO PROBLEMS!! Unbelievable... This is amazing, I really appreciate all of your help. Does that mean that Im clear, or Should I still do the things that you spoke of in your last post? Also, what Antivirus and spyware softwares do you recommend? What steps should I follow in order to make sure that this scary situation does not happen again :)

You already have a decent Anti-Virus program and AVG Anti-Spyware is excellent too, just keep them updated.
What firewall are you using? If it is just the standard Windows one, then you need to get a third party program such as Comodo (in my sig).
Using a different browser such as opera or FireFox will also greatly assist you in keeping clean.

--

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
  3. Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

If you have any more problems, post back.

Happy surfing,

crunchie.

Should I delete all the files that we ran to locate the problem, such as ComboFix, etc.? Also, do you think that the virus could have come from a music or program downloaded from the internet? If so, once I run the program or play the music again will the virus infiltrate my PC again?

There are several places where it could have come from, but I reckon it has gone now :). It should be ok for you to run your programs now.

Let's get rid of Combofix now that we are finished with it.

The above procedure will:

  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

==

I would keep AVG and ATF cleaner as they are good to run on a daily or weekly basis.

My virus scanner has already deleted ComboFix. When I ran the "Combofix /u", it says file cannot be found. How do I verify that all the other things in the list are done such as:
Delete:
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

I did follow your earlier directions on how to reset System Restore, so I dont think I would have to do it again. But please definitely let me know about how to reset the time.. thats been throwing me off a bit :) Thanks.

It would probably be simpler to download combofix again without having your AV delete it :D. Do a scan with it and when done, run the uninstall procedure.

Ok, I downloaded combo fix again and start run still cant find the file. Do I need to run combofix and let it go all the way through again?

Yes please. I am not entirely certain, but it should do the trick. Certainly easier than doing everything manually :).

I ran the Combofix /u. A box came up and asked me if I wanted to run the program, and I selected RUN. Within 2 seconds a box popped up and said that Combo Fix was uninstalled. So I guess it worked. There was never a disclaimer to come up with an option "2" .

Just check to see if any folders created by Combofix still exist. Delete any if necessary.
