1. The Norton/Symantec AV program has the ability to allow you to delete objects that it has quarantined but cannot fix; open the list/log of quarantined items and choose to delete them.
2. In terms of your "broken" Internet access, this can happen as a result of cleaning (or trying to clean) infections that have integrated themselves into your Windows networking software components.
Please do the following; it will give us a much better idea of exactly where your problems lie and exactly what damage has been done:
Download HijackThis:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Once downloaded, follow these instructions to install and run the program:
1. Create a new separate folder on your drive for HijackThis, move the program into thids folder, and run it from there. (Don't run HJT from within any Temp or Temporary Internet folder, and don't run it directly from your desktop.)
2. Before fixing problems with HijackThis, you must make sure to close/quit ALL instances of your web browser(s)! HijackThis cannot fully perform its fixes while browsers are running.
3. Run HijackThis, but do not have HJT fix anything yet; only have it scan your system! Once the scan is complete, the "Scan" button will turn into an option to "Save log...". Save the log in the folder you created for HiajckThis, open the log in Windows Notepad, and cut-n-paste the entire contents of the log here. The log contents will tell us a lot about what "nasties" have crept into your system, and once we analyse the log we can tell you what to do from there.

Don't run HJT from within any Temp or Temporary Internet folder, and don't run it directly from your desktop.
Please re-read the above; this entry in you HJT log indicates that you are running the program from within a Temp folder:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe"
Please create a new folder outside of any Temp/Temporary folders for the new version of HJT and move it there now. A folder such such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis will do.
One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. If HijackThis and any other files/data that you care about are living in those Temp folders, they will be erased along with everything else! Please move any and all files that you want to keep out of your Temp folders and into another location before we proceed.
Once you have taken care of the above, run HJT from its new location and post a new log.
renuan1 0 Newbie Poster
is that a step to remove the virus or is erasing temp folder contents a "worst case scenario"?
i just moved the zip file to C: drive and the same pop up about temp folders appears

Hi. Download this self-extracting version from here. Uninstall the other version first, then manually delete the file.
Download LSPfix from here
On the opening screen, click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox. Check all instances of "dolsp.dll" (and nothing else), and move them to the "Remove" pane. Then click Finish.
Go to c:\windows\system32 and delete that file manually.
Rescan with hijackthis. Post that log please.

You may have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe
Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
I have to go to work now, so will not be able to get back for another 12 hours or so. Please do not turn off your PC in the meanwhile :).

The presence of the guard.tmp file in C:\Windows\system32 does indicate an infection by one of the latest VX2 variants. However, as crunchie has asked you to use the L2mfix utility and I have not used that tool yet, I'd advise that you stay off line and proceed no further until he can get back to this.

thanks
is there a way or program to share files safely?
In my opinion, no, though there are some that would argue with that.
Not only does file sharing (aka P2P) ultimately lead to infections, it is illegal to 'share' most software.
And, it's against the rules of this site to assist with file sharing anyway:

As DMR mentioned, you definitely have the VX2 infection. Please do the following;
Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

I use soulseek for filesharing. No ads, no spyware, real straight forward.
Run winsockfix in my sig, it only takes a couple minutes and a restart. It may bring back your internet.

Looks like it did it's job :).
Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here and navigate to and delete the following if found:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tubdvujo.exe<----file
Reboot normally after doing the above, rescan with hijackthis, then post that log here please.
Should be all clear after this :D.

thanks alot for your help so far
DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague
The log looks better now. Please do the following to clean things up:
1. This entry in your log indicates that you had an instance of Internet Explorer running when you ran your HJT scan:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
Before fixing problems with HijackThis, you must make sure to close/quit ALL instances of your web browser(s)! HijackThis cannot fully perform its fixes while browsers are running.
2. After taking care of the above, run HJT and have it fix:

3. Let us know what problems (if any) you are still experiencing.

You now have a CWS infection.
Download about:Buster and unzip it to your Desktop. Doubleclick on AboutBuster.exe to run it and then click on Update > Check for Update. If there is an update available, click on 'Download Update and wait while it downloads. Once downloaded, click on Exit.
When you have done this, boot into Safe Mode (restart your PC and tap F8 as it restarts) and make sure that you can view hidden files and folders.
Close all open windows and run Hijack This again. Check the below entries and click on Fix Checked.

Close Hijack This and run about:Buster again, click the 'Start' button and then click the 'OK' button. Let it scan (the scan can take some time to complete, so be patient.). Once the first scan has completed, it will ask you if you wish for about:Buster to scan once more. Click Yes and let it scan a second time. Once the second scan has finished, copy and paste the report to Notepad and save it on your drive.
To copy and paste the report to a log file, select (highlight) all of the text produced by the scan with your mouse, right-click and select 'Copy'.
Next, launch Notepad (click Start > Run > type notepad.exe and press enter). When the file is open, rightclick and select Paste. Click on File > Save As and save it in C:\ as Log.txt. Copy the log and post it back in this thread when you have rebooted.
While still in Safe Mode, run a search and make sure that all of the below files in bold have been deleted (if not delete them):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awssd.dll<----file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3bn32.exe<----file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atleb.exe<----file
Reboot, reset your Home Page and run a Housecall scan. It will get rid of any remaining files. Post a new Hijack This log (and your About Buster log).
