There are two processes: System and System Idle. That'll be the Image Name in Task Manager. The User Name for each of these will be SYSTEM. One of two things could be happening: 1/ The image "System" can host other services. If one of them is malware or you have …

Vista isn't slow. I've got Aero and most of the time when you're doing stuff, Aero's doing nothing. Anti-Virus does stuff - I'm looking at Task Manager now and the basic Windows load that I perceive is no more than 3% (Taskmgr.exe). It'll be higher deoending on what anti-virus software …

Vista. There's a lot of argument about this but most of those arguing against don't understand or know about the improvement to memory management in Vista over XP. Vista treats the whole of its user RAM as "squeezable" cache. This means that any unused RAM is intelligently populated by Vista …

Not enough info I'm afraid. Does a URL to anywhere else work? In any case, tell us whether or not you have connected to your router as an administrator? Are the right green lights on in your router? As much info as possible.

The principal steps are as follows: 1/ Make sure you've got at least 20GB free on your HDD 2/ Contract one or more of your partitions (if you have more than one) to give the 20GB needed for Windows 7. More if possible. 3/ Add another partition (Partition Magic 8 …

It won't be the 64 bit OS unless they specifically say so in their description. There's lots of stuff on this forum about the merits of 3GB vs 4GB, the nub of which is this with regard to 32 bit OS: 1/ 3GB is vastly better than 2GB. 2/ This …

A long beep is usually a RAM problem. As you've tried the original RAM, it is possible that there is a common cause fault on both RAM sticks. Like zapped by static electricity. Or not seated proerly (unlikely for 1 long beep).

jbennet is so right! My Quaddie has a 7600 and we only took the upgrade drivers from Nvidia. But sometimes (I've not seen it with Nvidia), Windows updates device drivers like the one for my Viewsonic VX2235wm in Vista. No harm done there - but for Nvidia, Nvidia is the …

You can boot from the CD in DOS mode and get the important files off. You can take the HDD out into a USB enclosure, connect it to another PC and get the files off. Based on your story (and even the possibility that a trojan could still be lurking …

Your story was a gripping read. Your banging the top might have glitched something power-wise (and what not). Something metallic could have dropped into the PSU, for example metal shavings. Any power over-supply (I find that hard to believe) would/could zap or damage any part of the circuitry especially memory …

I've explained this in a couple of other threads but it's worth repeating here. First, your numbers pretty well account for the total available RAM. Vista treats free RAM as cache for its DLLs and other frequently used code. So it will always report 0 free or maybe up to …

Did you google Spyware Guard 2008? It would seem that the web is full of advice on how to remove this malware. There is a manual method described at: http://www.removal-instructions.com/removeSpywareGuard2008.html This method would work if your PC is at least useable. What I would do is slightly different, but you …

I think the reason you've had no replies yet to a fairly easy question is that nobody wants to ruin your enthusiasm with a negative reply. Fact is that 64MB. graphics RAM doesn't cut it for the games mentioned. If the card could share RAM with your PC (and for …

if you've been infected then these things propagate and don't go away unless surgically removed. So, you should head over to the virus forum, read the sticky post and supply the evidence to get this debugged. Seriously.

If I've understood correctly, the CD is not booting or running properly although it is trying to. yes? There was another case of something not to distantly related. When he washed the CD in tepid soapy water, the install worked. I hope it's as simple as that for you.

There is the COCATENATE function in Excel to join two text strings. You have to take care of the space between first name and last name; so all your first name fields must have a trailing space added. I've tested this and it works.

Often a device driver not behaving properly causes this sort of thing. Do deal with it, we'd to know full details of your system and exactly what happened and full error messages.

You can go into regedit (google this for the details) and disable the pre-fetch of DLLs. They will then be loaded as eeded not as cahced and learned over 4 years. Or double your RAM. We don't know your kit so this is all guesswork for your case.

Not to be expected IMHO. That defies to some extent what you've described, though. Logically, the old card tried to pull more amps than the PSU could supply so the PSU gave out. I wouldn't have expected the AGP card to have been damaged but can't rule that out. Have …

have you set the adapter to a resolution supported by the monitor at a supported frequency? Like 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz? My first instinct would be configuration or bent VGA cable pins.

Agreed. More RAM will halve your boot time (according to my experience). If you're using Norton AV, that can be processor intensive. The best systems these days have dual core and then it doesn't really matter because the other core can be used by your application.
