Is the cable for sound connected to the monitor? Have you tried using any headphones or other speakers?

Have you got the power lead connected?

Which version of Vista do you have? Is windows Aero disabled? Does Windows Key+Tab switch windows?

Have you tried entering safemode? (press F8 on boot up). You could try repairing windows using an XP CD.

Just how old is this laptop? Is there no restore partition? I don't think Microsoft would be too pleased if you used one OS on two machines. You should be able to install windows but if you have to register it or get updates then it could be a problem. …

Seems like its throwing up an error message and then turning off/restarting. Have you got the XP install CD.

Have you tried repairing it with an XP installation CD if you have one.

Do you have a firewall installed? You could also try a different web browser to see if that is the same.

I would install vista on the SATA drive though, its supposed to be faster than PATA.

No error messages? Does it detect any hard drive(s), Ram etc... Try pressing F2 to check in BIOS.

It maybe worthwhile trying to dual boot your system. I would shrink the partition with vista on and make another partition and put xp on that one. This way you can use both, if you use easyBCD you can choose to go back to XP, Vista or stick with both. …
