If you run the XP Networking Wizard it will fix the firewall settings for you. Go into my network places or network connections and click "Set up a small home/office network" to do this. Tell it your workgroup name when it asks for it

The artifacts make it sound like its overheating the drivers you want are Catalyst version 7.9 Use the wizard here: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html The 9800 is old and probably not compatible with Airborne (i think it needs the new pixel shader)

for most SATA or RAID installs of XP, even in this day and age, you must use a floppy disk with the drivers (.inf?) for your motherboard. I had to buy a floppy disk drive just for this reason but they are cheap so meh

Debian has xCHM in one of its repos (i think -contrib?) so ubuntu aught to have it in universe/multiverse If you cant find it then the Xchm site has a link to a Debian package. This should work on ubuntu. The file is a .deb so it needs no compiling

Yes, its on the motherboard and looks like one of those round watch batteries. There silver and fairly cheap and easy to replace. Remember to follow anti-static precautions, get the correct battery (consult motherboard manual) and put it in the correct way or you could kill your PC.
