Hello all,

Decided to post in here as thought it would be safer, and wasn't sure if I'd be violating any rules on any other threads.

Basically I'm looking for a Family Fortunes-type game that I can edit (questions and answers) and use - and I need it for a few days time (I know it's very short notice, I didn't think about posting here till today :-( ).

It doesn't have to be free, but as it's for an event for a charity, it would help.

Alternatively if there is someone who can seriously create something in a few days time, then do get in touch, and we can talk prices.

Look to hear back soon people, hopefully with something positive.

Many thanks

Yinka

Hi there, I'm hoping one of you more experienced guys can help.

I'm helping a guy at work, lent his laptop to someone, and it came back exhibiting the above symptoms, that is Internet Explorer opening and trying to access some "moe spirit" or something website. Anyway we knew something dodgy had gotten into it, so as a techie myself I've tried to remove the culprits and I thought it was all gone, but not quite. I'll tell you what I've done so far.

Went into regedit, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run . Saw some dodgy entries in there relating to something called ddx.exe and removed it. Then went to the location Docs & Settings\Username\Local Settings\App Data and saw 3 exes, ddv, ddw and ddx and removed them. Then shut down and re-booted into Safe Mode, and had a bit more of a hunt in the registry but didn't see anything wrong. I booted back into the normal login and it seemed to be fine for about 5-10 mins, but then IE popped up again.

I then decided to run HiJackThis, and Malware Bytes

Hi All,

Usually able to deal with PC monsters but this one has me all but beat. It's a Dell Inspiron 1525 for a colleague with 32bit Vista on it, SP1 only (SP2 wouldn't install but after a lot of online searching and trying various fixes, I decided it's the least of my worries).

As the subject says, the machine can't get on to the internet via a cable or wireless signal, just gets that useless 169.254.x.x private IP address. The user says that problem started after uninstalling Norton (not sure what variant), can find out if crucial.
So anyways he brings it to me and whilst trying to clean out any bloatware, noticed Windows telling me the Firewall was off. I try to turn it on, but it just won't do it. I even try to do it in Services.msc, but I just get an error in there as well asking me to check the System Event Log for more info. Needless to say I didn't get more info there.

Has anyone ever encountered something like this? Anyone got any ideas, save doing a re-install of Vista?

Cheers

Well, there are so many data recovery software available in the market and online....but has anyone used them personally....we appreciate personal experiences

The reply before you implies that the poster has personally used that software before.

I have used EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard and I find it to be VERY good, very thorough. The demo version should be enough. Follow the instructions on the page carefully. All the best.

Firstly, you all are thread-hopping, so I'm not surprised that no long-term member has replied to your messages.

Secondly, no one seems to have taken any of the advice posted in one of the first few posts. If you don't want to download the Microsoft or McAffee tool, then download and use Malware Bytes. It has worked for me to remove various types of viruses, and it is highly recommended by security experts on this site.
Take the suggestions, try it, and post your results, if you want to make good use of your time, and our time.

Mate, I had exactly the same symptoms you've got, turned out to be Conficker. I got rid of it with a combination of the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool ( transferred through USB from an uninfected computer), and a McAfee Stinger tool. I've since been using McAfee Antivirus Solution and it's found and deleted any strain of Conficker it's found since (usually in the Autorun.inf file of my USB stick).
Also if you're going to use Malware Bytes, after downloading it change the name to something random so that any virus doesn't try to stop it working.

Hope that helps mate.

Hahaha, very funny indeed. My favourite one is the YouTube upside down vide & page layout. Even the text is backwards. I literally thought I had messed up my browser setting somewhat!!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Unbelievable! I didn't know IBM had that much money to spend!! :-p

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Good point mushy-pea. I tried to get travel information yesterday morning, and for the first time in a very long time, the internet seemed to have broken. I couldn't get any "live updates" or "current service news", and in the end had to resort to analogue tv to help me decide whether or not I could get to work. I guess sometimes old is reliable.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Nyeah, at least it was just Google that broke and not the entire internet. Or are the two synonymous?? Now THAT would be something to worry about!!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

That is indeed very sad, not only that people are taking matters into their hands to a great extent under the "cover" of the 'internet', but also that there aren't laws in place to remind people that just because they are behind a computer screen, doesn't mean they are behind some protective shield from the law.
I hope Mr. Arrington comes back from his break with a more positive outlook on life.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

I agree with you sir. You wouldn't leave your car keys on a table at the pub with your registration number stuck onto it.

I've worked with someone whose password was "london". Unsurprisingly, this was at a company in the City of, you guessed it, London.

Indeed, I think it is the sad but inevitable result of advancement in technology that sees these print magazines coming to the end of their lives. I confess that only last week, I was saying to my friend how wonderful it would be for me to be able to read a book on my smartphone/PDA, rather than actually have a book!

If we are to embrace the future, new ideas, new concepts, and new products then it stands to reason that pleasures that we have become so used to and taken for granted like reading a magazine on the way to/from work will become "archaic". Think Demolition Man or more recently I, Robot, where in the latter for instance the concept of pushing a button to turn a radio on/off was foreign to the main female character.

Change is the only constant thing in life. I choose to try to embrace it as quickly as possible, with the quiet hope that my instincts and expectations will follow suit.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

It's a very very... maaad world...

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Haha, that is ridiculous! That's got to be the downside of having a "politico-geek" President hasn't it, the desire to police people and their online activity can be construed as a different spin on promoting a Nanny-state society... dangerous waters I tell thee.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

A pretty good list, definitely something to think about (as someone who, like jeffritter aptly put it "only sits with their legs in the water"). And I agree with you on most of the points. You're spot on, when Apple realised it was about marketing, a new "MacWorld" was born.

In the UK you can get laptops with Linux OSes pre-installed, but oddly enough they are always Netbooks (with a screen size of not more than 10.9"). How depressing for a Linux-lover that must be! I know I was looking for a cheap laptop and did want to get a Linux one, but because of the screen size I went for an XP one instead. Which seems insane, seeing as Ubuntu is the one that's free, with free applications too.

All-in-all, I think the Linux "fanboys" and "basement dwellers" should read this, take it to the next general meeting, and start doing something about it. Just don't shout at us please when we ask why we need a root password that's different from a user account password :-p.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Int he UK, (and probably the US, I'm not sure about other countries) I don't think these schemes will be able to take off though, at least not quite yet. Simply because both governments have gone on unprecedented shopping sprees which included the purchase of a colossal number of shares in a few banks.

That's gotta hurt the wallet a bit and keep daddy from doing any more big spending, at least until the Christmas bonus comes in.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Very true sir, although it seems as if Virgin Media were just blowing hot air to see how many people they could make uncomfortable.

And as wise as your suggestions are, I have a feeling that in this competitive, capitalist, economy, the standard will only go as far as laying a cable in concrete from exchanges to houses and businesses. They won't even decide on a type[/] of cable, as different companies will have different profit margins.

Plus, what are we gonna do if we can't brag to our friends that we can get 50Mbps in our bedroom and they only get a measly 20 at the office?

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Hehehe... a good read, (amidst some pretty big claims), but I definitely see where you're coming from. I also believe that cloud computing along with out-sourcing for non-IT-focused companies is "where the future's at". But I guess as with such declarations by figures in the industry whose word should be as good as gold, only time will tell if this Point of View is worth a rock on the beach.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

I don't know if there's an obvious answer to this but, is this new Macbook going to be available in the UK at any point? And more importantly how long will we have to wait? I for one know I could do with a £500-£600 Mac, (the cheapest out here normally is about £800). And I know a few other colleagues who would be interested.

Oh and Ron, do you not think that there will be a performance trade-off? I mean are we still talking Core 2 Duo, 120 GB, 1 GB RAM etc?

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Less griping about speeds in shared accomodation, faster (and therefore more effective) video streaming, better remote connections... bring on the Giga-band!!!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

I agree with you Ryan. The indications are that there are big players in the malware community, and it's not just a million independent scammers, hackers, and vandals.

And I also agree about SS numbers. It's a shame that that's the way things work in the US, in the UK we don't have anything like that, but the govt is thinking of introducing ID Cards that would serve the same all-in-one identification purpose. Sad really... governments need to wake up to the threat of such a system, if they are gonna link all of my livelihood to a number or a piece of plastic.

I was privileged to attend the 5th Kaspersky Lab forum, held in the city of London, yesterday. It was actually a Cybercrime Forum (I have no idea if the other forums were as well, as this was my first), and so the main focus was – yeah, you guessed it – Cybercrime; criminals operating through the freedom and openness of the internet, causing all kinds of harm to internet, computer, and smart phone users not just for kicks and giggles as it used to be in the good old days, but now for money, and big money too.

It emerged that there is a steadily growing number of Malware developers and variety of threats (which is pretty obvious given the increase in the number of threat signatures since 1986 when the first virus was found). In addition, there are also strong indications that there is what Eugene Kaspersky (Co-founder and CEO) termed a, C2C – Criminal to Criminal – business network, which supports the trade of malware and botnets, SLAs, and malware brokers! I’m not joshing you. And what’s more, these networks transcend the borders of countries.

Please note, this is not to dispel the widely accepted notion that Malware developers don’t compete against each other, because I believe they do, much in the same way that AVG and Avira are competitors. However it is this idea of organised cybercrime that is more interesting, and would ultimately spell more doom for computer …

I am currently looking for a job and I have to say, it has not been an easy ride. Companies are demanding more and more specialist skills, but seem unwilling to train. I also wonder if there is much of an opportunity to move through the ranks at one company in the IT industry today. It really seems to me that to get where you want to be career-wise and financially, one has to be one's own boss.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

That's all well and good, but I think it solves a problem that didn't exist. What about one that DOES exist, I mean the bottleneck experienced with RAM modules not being able to take advantage of Dual and Quad Core speeds and capabilities on processors? It would be nice to transfer my music/movie library from my HD to my Portable Drive at 5 Gbps, but more impressive to me is being able to watch a movie in the middle of some programming or general internet browsing, without feeling the lag, or buying 3 GB of RAM.

I first heard about the Mojave Experiment indirectly through Daniweb, whilst reading a blog post about something different. I also decided to check it out whilst reading through a thread on here. And I'm glad I did, if only so I could get to share my opinion on it. After viewing about two-fifths of the videos on the Mojave website, I had seen enough to post something back on the thread that ignited it all. And then I carried on watching videos, and I paused to put some more thoughts down. Those thoughts would have been reproduced word for word in this post, except that after I had gone through about three-fifths of the videos, my computer crashed. What an irony right? And this was the first time it had done in seven months. Which isn't so bad I think most Windows Users would agree, but was made worse for me by the fact that it did so, whilst I was viewing a website telling me about another Windows product. I'm using XP Pro SP2 by the way.

So what's the big deal? Windows OSs crash all the time (sorry but it's the truth). Maybe that was a sign from the gods that MS do have a point and the sooner I upgrade to Vista, the better my life will be, at least in terms of my computing experience. However I choose to be a little more skeptical than that. Not because I …

I typed in my employers (company) name and in Cuil it comes up on the second page, but in Google on the first.
I typed in my name, and Cuil couldn't find anything, but Google gives me three pages (although only the first page has links relevant to myself.
Lastly I typed in "buy 4GB RAM for HP server" and whilst Google gave me the expected links to various websites including HP's on the 1st page, Cuil gave me links to various Ebay websites - Ireland, India, Canada, Australia... slightly amusing, but not delivering quite what the consumer wants I think.

All in all, I guess the "intuitive" concept behing the design needs to be re-assessed, because while it all sounds nice, it isn't giving me what I want. And if you don't give the users what they want then you don't have a business.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

It's almost like a 'Rachel and Ross from Friends' thing - will they, won't they, will they, won't they, and then they finally do, but the only one that gets screwed is the consumer ;)

"To be honest though, this one seems to have a much greater potential to be one that gets filed under bad ideas quickly forgotten, right next to Microsoft Bob in fact..." Really? Or could this in fact be, a premonition of things to come, of a world where we (as if we aren't already) consistently rely on our machines to not only do our jobs faster or more efficiently, but to also tell us HOW to do our jobs well, and to TELL US when we are not doing our jobs well? What I'm saying is, how far away is this from a time when machines decide that their algorithms and logical calculations are better than human reasoning and complexities??
