Hi everyone,

I downloaded a newer version of Bearshare last night, and limewire - only to have it give me alot of viruses. I can't connect to the internet on my desktop anymore. I'm hoping someone can help?

I saw an older thread that told me to use Hijack this for a report, so here it is...I hope I did it correctly. Any help would be appreciated.

It must have been an older thread because the version of HiJackThis you used is WAY out of date. Uninstall that one and download the NEWEST version.
Secondly, you say that Bearshare and Limewire gave you an infection, then WHY do you still have them on the computer? UNINSTALL them immediately. By using these programs you have found one of the easiest ways to infect the computer. Get rid of them or we cannot clean up the computer.
One of the items showing in this log is MyWebSearch, known malware.

Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel

2) Double click on Add/Remove Programs

3) Find "My Web Search" in the list of installed programs and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it. You may also want to uninstall any of the following items associated with FunWebProducts.

* My Web Search (Smiley Central or FWP product as applicable)
* My Way Speedbar (Smiley Central or other FWP as applicable)
* My Way Speedbar (AOL and Yahoo Messengers) (beta users only)
* My Way Speedbar (Outlook, Outlook Express, and IncrediMail)
* Search Assistant - My Way
Reboot the computer.

Then do the following:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.
Now if you cannot download directly to the computer then it can be downloaded to a flash drive and loaded onto the computer that way. Here also is a link for the manual update if you are unable to update on the computer itself. Be sure to look at the database number however on the downloaded program, it could be higher than the manual download updates page offers as that one runs behind the daily updates. If the database is higher on the one you install then don't bother with the manual update, run the scan as directed.
Reboot the system after the scan and cleaning with MBA-M and run a new HJT scan with the new version. Post back here with the MBA-M log and the HJT log.
Judy

Thanks Judy,

Here are the two reports you requested. I still am not able to connect to the internet, and I am 99% sure that i've finally removed Bearflix, and Limewire. They both gave me a hard time trying to remove them.

Edit: I just checked and I am still unable to remove Bearflix from my PC. I've used it for years and never had a problem until now. The problem is, I don't know where else to look for it in order to completely get rid of it. When I run a search I grab everything and delete it..other than that - I don't know what else to do.

Thank you.

Really things look pretty good. MBA-M removed some nasty stuff.
You can run HJT again and place a check mark next to the following entries:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PD0630 STISvc] RunDLL32.exe P0630Pin.dll,RunDLL32EP 513
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearFlix] "C:\Program Files\BearFlix\BearFlix.exe" /pause
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Performance Center] C:\Program Files\Ascentive\Performance Center\ApcMain.exe -m
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PC SpeedScan Pro] C:\Program Files\Ascentive\PC SpeedScan Pro\PCSpeedScan.exe -m
Once you have placed those check marks then click the Fix Checked button.
Exit HJT.
Now you say you cannot connect to the internet, how is the computer connected? If it is by dsl or cable, have you unplugged the modem, wait about a minute and then plug it back in.
What happens when you do try to connect?
Another KEY thing I see by your logs is you have NO antivirus program and NO firewall on the computer. While we absolutely do not condone P2P sharing here, if a person insists on doing this activity they MUST have anti-virus and firewall protection. This is the easiest way to become infected there is, plus then you run the risk of sharing ALL of your personal info with...????
Do you use AOL? I see several AOL files there. That's fine, not my favorite but to each his own.
Have you tried to boot using Safe Mode with Networking? This will give you a safe boot with only the required files + the ability to go online. See if you can do that.
Judy

Okay, I've removed those files that you requested. My computer is connected via a cable modem. I've tried unplugging that for over a minute, and it's still the same.

I don't have a firewall because when I play certain games - it causes problems. I've had mine turned off for a few years...I think that will change now. I don't use AOL - I only have the AOL messenger to talk with friends who don't use MSN, but I hardly use it.

I tried booting in Safemode, but nothing changed.

Perhaps I should give my cable/internet provider a call for that specific issue? The malware/trojans seem to be gone thankfully...

I do notice that the connection is shown as "connected" and the speed it 100kbps. I clicked on the connection status and it doesn't show that any packets are even being exchanged. I click on properties and it doesn't even show an IP address, or subnet mask or anything. Now I'm really worried....

You say you are connected via cable, but your log shows WiFi running.

Have you checked Device Manager to see if there are any problems noted there with network adapter?

You might try doing a Winsock Fix

Take a look at my attachment. Do your settings look like this in Internet Protocol Properties?
This is how mine is set up. I am on cable connection

Hi Again,

Yes, my settings are the same as yours in the attachment. I downloaded the winsock program, ran it, and still nothing. I have wifi set up for my laptop, and my roomates laptop, and for my Xbox 360.

Update:

I also checked my device manager, and there didn't appear to be any problems. Everything said that it was working properly. I spoke to my cable/internet provider last night, and they had me go through the command prompt to try to run winsock and some other commands. Nothing worked.

Thanks in advance for the help you're providing.

You might try going into Device Manager and Deleting the Network Adapter. Reboot the computer and it should find it and update it. You also might check for a driver update for your adapter.

Okay, Do you mean Disable? I don't see any "delete" option, also I have two option for network adapters. 1394 Net Adapter, and NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller - which one should I perform this action on?

NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller is the one you want. If you Right Click on it, rather than open it you should have the option to Uninstall. See my attached. I don't have the same card as you do but the options should be the same.
Now I did find this bit of info concerning this controller, it is "possible" the nVidia driver isn't working correctly and by using the driver from Microsoft there is a chance it can work correctly. This was the suggestion I found.
uninstall the card via device manager,
goto your driver folder: c:\Windows\System32\Drivers
cut (not copy) the driver file to your desktop or somwhere else for safe keeping, its file name starts with nvefd and then a system name, for example nvefdxp.sys for xp.
Then restart your computer, and hopfully it picks up the network card and uses the Microsoft driver, the nvidia driver should not even be listed any more.
It is possible that you don't have that driver. That is fine. Just try the uninstall and reboot and see what happens.

I tried doing that, my file said NVENETFD. Restarted - and nothing has changed. Any other suggestions?

Did you Uninstall the Network Controller. Move the driver file to the desktop. Reboot and then let the controller be found and installed by Windows?

I have done as you suggested. The only thing that changes is when I reboot, it asks me for the Nvidia disk to install the driver. I don't have /have never had a disk for that.

If you moved the driver to the desktop as instructed then that it where it is located. Or just tell it to install the Windows Driver

Okay, I searched again and made sure that the files are on my desktop. When the window pops up it says that "Some files on DVIDIA nFroce Networking Controller Driver Disk 1 are needed. I try and browse for the files, but they are never recognized. I tried to drag and drop them into a folder I named NVE, and it still won't recognize that i've done that. It keeps telling me that the file doesn't exist. I'm at a total loss at this point..

EDIT:

I found the file, and tried to install it. It says that it cannot start this Hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware. Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. Code 39

Do you ever get the option to choose the default Windows Driver?

Here is the Driver page for nVidia. Go through the choices there.

No, I don't get that option. I tried to go to the nvidia website and download new drivers, but the story is the same. It asks me for files that I don't have on my pc. It asks to connect to the internet to find them. I keep going in circles, I've read on some other websites that I might have to do a re-installation of Windows? I've also read that I could do a system restore, but again I run into more problems as I am unable to actually get system restore to work.

Boy, I am really at the end of my suggestions here, especially since you don't have the disk. I find it a bit unusual that you are asked for OTHER files when trying to install a new driver. You should be able to point to that driver file and get it installed. Exactly how are you trying to install the driver? I assume you have downloaded it to either a cd/dvd or a flash drive, correct?
Have you gone into Device Manager, Right Click the nVidea Adapter and then chosen Update Driver? It shouldn't ask for other files it should only ask for the driver, and you should be able to direct it to where the new driver is located. Do you ever get the option to use the default Windows Driver? Do you have a disk with the Windows Drivers on it?
Hate to say it but reinstall may be the only way to go here. Don't do a System Restore, that isn't going to take you anywhere except back to the infection I imagine.
System Restore isn't the "end all and be all" of repair anyway. System Restore actually operates only on a very few system files and settings and is intended for only very recent changes, within a day or two. It only holds so many restore points, as new ones are added the old ones drop out. Yes, there may be older restore points than a day or two, but so many changes happen within that time period that restoring back too far can bring on even worse changes, it really isn't advised. In fact I very rarely recommend using it. Relying on it to repair or remove a program OR infection is really not what it was intended to do.

Well, I'm going to take a break from all this for a day or so. I'm literally so sick of it that my stomach hurts. I will resume once i've calmed down and get some fresh air. I've appreciated all of your help.

When I come back I will try to be more specific about what i'm seeing or not seeing, and that way maybe you can offer some more insights.

Ok, I'll look for your next post.
