sorry, if I right click on it and open it in a new window or tab, the search feature shows up, my bad
alc6379, I was starting to learn python. I am working my way towards LPI 1, and was looking through 1 & 2. I found in topic 213, you have to be able to write simple perl scripts and install Perl modules from CPAN. So now I will have to start learning perl and come back later to python.
When I was a kid, we did alot of things as a family. Go to church, play games, do homework, go camping. We were always outside when the weather permitted, but when it was too bad to go out, we were allowed to watch some tv, not much but some. Being as I was the youngest, I had a special duty during our tv watching time. I had to stand holding the antenae, with aliminum foil wrapped around it to get the best reception, being told to move this way or that way to get the best picture. Luckily, it was a black and white tv with only 3 channels.
Now those were the good old days.
Does it move only when she is online, or does it move offline also? Is the mouse speed set too high?
The thing is, there are "zealots" in any of the os camps. Just learn to deal with it and move on. One of my IS professors is a big Mac user, but does not preach about it. He is always interested in my linux experiences, and even asked me to do a demonstration in one of the classes. Another professor only teaches windows apps. classes, but is encouraging in my use of linux where applicable. Maybe I am just lucky to have understanding profs.
I run into a bunch of people on the different boards that I frequent that are just hard headed and staunch supporters of their os of choice. So what, ignore and just move on.
RC_Razor, why the dam government?
TKS, alot off people learned to use a computer using windows. They either don't want to get out of their comfort zone or don't need to. Windows will take care of their needs(word proccesor, e-mail, games, etc.) Just be glad that you have an option to use a different OS.
To each his own, use what works best for you.
Which is better, dunno, what is it you are trying to do? Why don't you try them, and find out which works best for you. I could tell you which one is the clear winner, but that won't help you. My needs will probably be differant than your needs. Try them both along with any other app that interests you, only you will know the clear winner.
So let me get this straight, you are missing about 1.6 gigs on your harddrive? Well, I am not sure about xp pro, but xp home takes about 1.5 gigs to load on the harddrive. That would be about right though, the operating system does use disk space. Am I even in the same ballpark as you are on your question? Sorry if I missed something.
Have you tried opening the file to see what is in it?

Nobody should ever buy a Celeron, for any reason, no matter what.
That is a bit extreme. I have used celerons for some time and I have not had any problems with them. Remeber, most people use their computers to write reports, e-mail, and surf the net. Celerons will do that with no problems.
The Soundman, I don't think you will have any problems with either intel or amd. It will probably come down to pricing for you.
Try resetting you ram sticks first, if that does not work, try another stick that you know is good. That is all I can help you with so far. I tried googling, but did not come up with much. Seems like you are having alot of problems with new parts. Check everything out and return all bad parts.
afdrano, do you leave your computer on at night? You may be sleeping, but if the computer is on, well then....
Have you tried to google for more info?
I also noticed how big that file is 261 - 279 megs, have you tried to delete it?
Will you pick me up a couple of them for that price? I don't think you will find a better deal.
2.99 huh? :cheesy:
drummerboy, welcome to the world of linux. Hope you have plenty of time on your hands to learn more. :cheesy:
This will become invaluable to you in finding info on linux:

I agree with The Soundman. I have a P11 400Mhz 100 fsb and I use PC133 memory. I have not had any problems. Also check around for pricing. I just got a Tigerdirect catalog and the prices are around $50 for 256MB. Check with friends, family, or school to see if anyone is getting rid of their old computers. That is how I usually come by my older RAM.
I was just wondering, what is it with the avatars? I have never used any in the forums that I sign up for. Just wondering if it is a way to express yourself or just something to do?

But I lost a $17 PSU that I can replace (yeah right) and then fork out the $600 in parts burned up.
I have 2 HDs on a raid card and 512 PC3200 RAM and a Athlon XP1800. Not exactly impressive.
To me that is a decent system, to you, I guess it isn't if you put a $17 psu in it. As far as being a 13 year old, I don't think so, that was many years ago, and even at that age, my parents had taught me that you get what you pay for. Oh well, good luck.
You also might want to check this out. Don't know if it will help, but it would be you cheapest option right now, there are other models on the second site further down the page. Hope this helps you out.

Well if the monitor from downstairs does the same thing, and the monitor from upstairs works downstairs, then I think it is some problem with the wiring. The electrician is probably correct about noise on that one circuit. Like I said before, check or have someone check to make sure there is not something else running on that same circuit. Another problem might be that your neutral wire(should be a white wire) on that circuit may be tied in to another circuit. Somebody may have used the same neutral wire on two different circuits. If this is the case, then there is the possibility of getting the noize from something plugged into the other circuit.
The circuits should have there own neutral that goes back to the breaker/fuse panel. What do you have, breakers or fuses? Is this an older house? I guess it is an older house because you do not have a ground wire?
I know it can get expensive, but your best bet is to run new wire from the panel to your outlets that have a computer plugged in.
Blynch, the popups do not have anything to do with the wiring in your house. That is your computers problem.
Now as far as the wiring and not knowing anything about your house or what the electrician actually did, what did he do?
He should have made sure the polarity was correct, that is just basic knowledge.
I have never worked with UPS's before, but was the red light on before he did any work? The manual would tell you if it needs to be grounded.
Have you checked all and I mean all outlets that are on the same breaker/fuse that your computer is plugged into? I have seen outlets in the basement that were on the same branch as an outlet on the second floor. There might be something plugged into an outlet on the same branch as your computer that is interfering with your monitor.
I would take your monitor to a friends house and try it to make sure that is not your problem. Then find a competent electrician to correct your wiring problems.
I live in the US, and I do not have any knowledge about wiring in any other country, so I hope this will be of some help.
Pong and Space Invaders, ah, those were the days. :D
Hot Air Baloon
A man is standing on a hilltop when a man riding in a hot air balloon starts to drift by. The man in the balloon asks "Do you know where I am?" The man on the ground replies "In a hot air balloon." The man in the balloon says "You must work in Information Technology. What you told me is 100% correct, but does not help me at all" To which the man on the ground replies "You must be in Business Administration, because you are in the same mess you were in before, but now it is my fault!"
Why we love kids
NUDITY
I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, "Mom! That lady isn't wearing a seat belt!
HONESTY
My son Zachary, 4, came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me he'd dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. So I fished it out and threw it in the garbage. Zachary stood there thinking for a moment, then ran to my bathroom and came out with my toothbrush. He held it up and said with a charming little smile, "We better throw this one out too then, 'cause it fell in the toilet a few days ago.
OPINIONS
Redshift, I posted the same thing on another forum back in December. The ending was a little different:
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We
had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to
deal with it all. And you're one of them! Congratulations!
Please pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow up as kids,
before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors?
People under 30 are Wimps
Does anyone remeber lawn jarts, the ones with the metal tips? Now those were fun to play with. Throw them up as high as you could and run like hell so you wouldn't have one sticking out of your head, because your mother would get really mad at you. :cheesy:
The university I work at uses those clamps. The problem here is, Campus Police have the information on your car and if you do remove it, tsk, tsk. They do not take kindly to removing it yourself, and I think one of them told me it was against the law to remove it yourself.
Linux is just better than Windows, for me. ;)
Knoppix is a great idea and works well. Slax-Live CD is another good one that I use at work and school. You do have to remember that these live distros will run slower on you machine than a hardrive install will. Check out this site for more:
http://www.distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=cd
One other note, make sure you burn it as an iso image so it will be bootable.
Why would you feel offended? Is it because it is about linux?
quote:
Just install both... and decide for yourself
Good point Tekmaven, I installed both to see what they both offered. I have migrated to kde, just didn't like the feel of gnome.
quote:
I already extract the files to my documents and is name samba-3.0.1
There is no "MY Documents" in linux, unless you created a file or directory with that name yourself. Like you said, you have extracted the file, then did you do like BigB told you above? You have to use the command cd (file name) where samba is located. This will put you in the right file or directory, then you can go to the configure command.
Well, if you had 50 billion in the bank, what else are you going to spend it on? ;)
I agree though, alot of this kind of stuff just gets out of hand.
f575gtc, nice screen shots. I really like the one on the left. Now I am not much of a window user, but how hard is it to change to a look like that?
And please don't laugh at me. :D
I tried going to that web site, but it would not load for me, maybe because I was using firebird? Guess I will have to try it next time I load up XP.
Yes the hardrive will fragment, but not nearly as much as windows will. There are defragmenter tools for linux, but you should not need them. I have been using RH 9 for about 8 months now and the last time I saw anything on my system was like 3% fragmented. This has not done anything to my systems stability or speed. The linux filesystem takes care of your system pretty well. If you want to take a look at defrag tools, try this:
http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=defrag&btnG=Google+Search
Hope this helps and if anyone else can elaborate on this, all the better.
I use ext3 on my RH9 box. I will be switching distros shortly and will probably check out a couple of the other ones. This is just a home box, so I don't know if I will see any differances.
Thanks cscgal, I quess I should look around this site for more info.
Sorry if I hijacked this thread. I myself don't like to see a flaming war between anybody. If there is another way to communicate with someone, let me know. There are times when something that might need to be communicated, but not out in the open.

I completely agree. If I mess up a setting in Linux, I find that my whole Operating System may not be able to boot, with no way of fixing it.
Just so you know, I'm pretty good at everything Linux. I've been using it on and off for a few years - I'm no newbie by any definition. I'm sure that your set of computer knowledge is a subset of mine.
When your unbanned, please show some evidence, and don't flame anyone.
If you are so good at linux, then how do you mess up a setting that makes your system unbootable, and you can't fix it? Just curious. Also, if you are a moderator here, then why are you putting someone down by saying their knowledge is a subset of yours? And then you tell someone not to flame anyone. Whats up with that? How old are you?
Like I stated before, use the system that will work best for you, and if you want to expand your knowledge, then you can try other systems. To each his own.

As far as professors teaching computer science, I hate to say it, but I think it's their personality that destroys their teaching methods. I've had over 15 different computer science professors and they all have the same personality.
The personality of the professor will make a big differance no matter what subject they teach. Its a shame that you got 15 bad ones.
quote:
I don't think the school has anything to do with it because a lot of these professors have taught in different schools where I'm sure they acted the same.
I work at a small university and have been taking classes on the side. I will probably go with compsci as my major. Our compsci department consist of 4 professors, and I have had 3 of them so far. They all taught at other universities before coming here. I am lucky because they are good teachers and have good personalities. Also the class size are usually quite small.
I have also been taking classes from the Info Tech department and only a few of the professors are any good. That department probably has about 15 professors and a bunch of T/A's and freelance teachers.
The school and professors do make a difference in what you can learn from them. You will have to learn alot on your own to round out what interest you.

Yes I have seen that movie many times. :surprised
I use firebird on RH9 and have no problems copying and pasting. See below, I just highlight the text and click the middle button to paste. Cool

Why can I not copy&paste while using the firebird browser on this BBS? Quite annoying really! lol
Just wandering.... Might want to fix that if this is indeed the case.

Linux is not for the average person, it requires abit of programming skills and alot of time if your going to make it run right
I had no programming skills when I first installed linux. With the installers improving on alot of the distros, this is getting easier. I have had just as many problems installing windows as I have had with linux. It took me about an hour to install RH7.3 the first time, and yes it was running right. :cheesy:
That said, use what works best for you and what you want to do with it. I think it is a good time for people who want to learn more about computers, with all of the choices that are out there. Pick an OS and try it out, if you don't like it, move on to the next one.

I use k3b in linux to burn my isos and it does an automatic md5sum, but that is nice for windows users. :)
