you do know you cant start the xp install from DOS as its an nt based system? you have to start it by booting from the xp cd. Starting the windows 98 dos and typing setup will not work!

dont use VC++ Express. By default it can only make .NET apps, not proper win32 apps. To make "classic" c++ apps you need to install and configure it to use somethig called the platform SDK which is a pain in the ass Use dev c++ instead.

if for some reason it never comes up then make sure to close your existing explorer first (under processes tab on control-alt-delete then in the taks manager do file -> run -> explorer and click the desktop a couple of times and wait.

as soon as the pc boots up hit f8 repeatedly until you get to a text menu with options. Choose "Safe Mode". Once booted into safe mode change your graphics settings to the correc values and shutodwn properly
