Re: Goodness, dlh! What on Earth are you doing resurrecting an old topic? Was the post misplaced? Anyway, seeing that it's been resurrected I'd like to add comment related to the original question. There is really only one way to ensure beyond doubt that another person does not use your PC. …

Re: Hang on a bit. Just uninstalling the onboard sound from within Windows is not enough. Uninstall the old one. Shut down. Power up and immediately go into BIOS setup. Disable the onboard sound there. Boot up, and install the new soundcard.

Re: Sometimes those errors can be caused by faulty hardware - a processor which is failing, RAM modules which are faulty or mismatched, etc, etc. But most of the time they will be the result of software issues. In this case, it is most likely a program which is causing the …
Re: You've not mentioned which Windows version, but for Windows XP I use the OS itself for Zip files, and WinRAR for all other archive types. Works for me, and it's a pretty clean way to deal with things. Moved to the 'Windows Software' section, by the way.
Re: Use 'Help' or <F1> to bring up the help balloon, type in 'create mail account' as you search criteria and you'll bring up the instructions you need. You'll also bring up the full 'Help' index along with it, and you should spend a bit of time reading through the assistance …
Re: Your best option by far, given that you have a network, is to use an all-in-one Cable/ADSL Gateway/Router/Modem. Full anti-intrusion protection, no software overhead, and you can now purchase them at a quite low price. You should also check to see if you have your network configured appropriately. Just because …

Re: Which Windows version do you use. The error seems to suggest that a Windows XP only program is being used on a Windows 98 system. It my not mean that the Kernel32.dll file needs to be replaced - just that an illegal call to it has benn made.
Re: Use a better copying program? Any backup copies I've made have worked just fine, whether they were created with Nero or with CloneCD. You're actiually using a CD copy routine, are you, and not just dragging/dropping the CD contents from one drive to another?
Re: Boot from Windows XP CD. Delete partition before continuing with the install. Create new ones. Continue installing Windows. The XP installation routine contains the necessary utilities and capability.

Re: No. If the presence of Outlook Express leaves you short of drive space then your hard drive isn't big enough to use with Windows XP. The only way to really remove it is to purchase and use XPLite, and choose to remove OE through that. But simply don't use it …

Yes, it's finally out of Beta and into final release. New features are plentiful, and add both functionality and improved MS Office compatibility. Discussion of this upgrade to the excellent and well known freeware office software suite has been plentiful during the period of Beta release, so there's no need …
The battle between Sony’s Blu-Ray and Toshiba’s HD-DVD has been a drawn out one, with nary a sniff of resolution in sight, and has seen likely to plunge consumers back into a situation similar to the VHS v BetaMax videotape battles of the 1980s. But a recent move by HP …

To the average consumer the ‘Digital home’ has little to do, really, with internet-connected intelligent refrigerators that do the grocery ordering for you, or robotic valets who ready the ‘pipe and slippers’ when you walk through the door. It simply means a way to manage the home entertainment and avoid …

A quality power supply unit is a ‘must’ in a modern, high performance PC system. The Inquirer has just published their recommendations for the ‘value points’ in processor purchasing. The assumptions they make fall somewhat short of the mark in my eyes, and leaves their …
There will doubtless be a lot of disappointed gamers, but it seems the Nvidia 6800 Ultra and the ATi Radeon X850XT are the 'end of the road' for AGP gamers. Those who have been waiting for updated and improved cards to arrive have been waiting in vain, it appears. Although …
