In games, for example, "Stand Alone" means something that doesnt need somethine else to run. For example - there are stand-alone expansion packs, which dont require the original game, and stand-alone mods - e.g. counter strike and TF2 dont require half life.

this happens on my dads old fujistsu siemsns, usually due to windows update changing something. I delete all the audio things from device manager and then reboot and run the add new h/w wizard and then it works fine.

Its really easy, if your driver is supported. Ubuntu is a lot better than the others. My Intel 3945 works great, but Broadcom cards need a proprietary driver to work. They are a pain, but the "hardware/restricted drivers" applet should be able to get them for you.
