There are apple apps that will only work on WiFi. Airplay, Itunes share, and facetime are a few off the top of my head.
DHCP (Distributed Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
It is a method of sending information from one IP address to another. A simpler description is, a method used by your router to "talk to your computers". It doesn't matter if you use WiFI or Ethernet, both use DHCP. Normally, this setting is left to the router to assign. You can place your own in, providing you know the range of numbers you can use.
This is territory that is best left to ones that are familiar to setting up a router. There is a strong possibility of setting the wrong setting and you will have no network. Fortunately it is not dependant on the OS so if you have someone in the know, wether they are MAC or PC doesn’t matter.
This is getting way off of track concerning your problem. Did you try turning off your WiFi and see if the problem persists. Interference from something as simple as a microwave can affect your single (under certain circumstances!) You can turn it on and off without it affecting anything. So if you choose to facetime, turn on WiFi and be ready to smile.

macmad 29 Junior Poster in Training

Please note the time of occurance and then take a look at the system log. See if it produces any hints. Turn off the WiFi and see if the problem persists. These days Apple is insisting on WiFi. One solution that comes to mind, if the problem persists after shutting off the WiFi, is to apply a manual address for your DHCP. You would have to reserve the address on your router. It really depends on the munufactor of the router for the procedure.

MS word... I understood that everything was held on their cloud. I fortunally never bothered with MS anything. I would imagine that you could try and open recent and if the app saved it, It should be listed.

Please go to disk Utility and select your HD. On the bottom left corner describes the drive. Is it formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? I think that from the sounds of it , you may of formatted the drive as FAT. This is why you are not seeing a valid boot drive as a mac volume must be AFP (Apple Filing Protocal).
You got yourself in quite a mess, not a disaster, just a mess and it will take quite a bit of time to fix. You will have to erase your HD and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). You do not identify what OS you are running and this is important. You say that there are no boot partitions showing up. This tells me that you are not running Lion and that you have the OS on a DVD. Format the drive from the DVD and there is an option th restore. Select the option to restore from Timemachine and your system will reload to the last backup.....you do use timemachine, don't you?

It looks like someone is short on their libraries. I take it that you approached your instructor with the problem? She said "what an interesting delima you have here, this is a good learning experence for you", and then left you high and dry. Welcome to the real world. She really didn't, she wants to see what you can do.
Told nothing, expect miracles. Why is everybody picking on me? Bla,bla, bla. This is a relativly simple problem and well within your abilities to fix, even though you do not realize it.
I really would recommend loading xcode on your system. You state that you do not have the banwidth to do so... at home. Then go to your library! Better yet, set up an appointment with a genius at the apple store and if you are up front with your problem they will show you what libraries to load and how to load them and they would probably download xcode right there.
A good resource that you should check out is source forge (sourceforge.net). They have all the libraries that you could need and then some. You can even pick up some quality routines.
You now have the resources that you need, now it is up to you what you do with them. The more that you can think your way out of a box, the better chance you will have out in the real world.

Not good. please check "About this mac" Located under the apple. Run the system report and check to see if it is connected via the hardware. You state that you connected it to a window's machine so I will go with a USB connection. Just look at USB under hardware and see if you spot your HD. (Hint. Look for Seagate).
I doubt that it will show up from the sounds of your problem. Send it back for a new enclosure, or get a new enclosure and drop the drive in. I do think that your data is intact and recoverable, Just not in that inclosure.
There is a possability that it will show up. This indicated that the boot block on the drive is corrupt. In that case you need some serious diagnostic software. Tech tool pro (TT6) comes to mind. TT6 will mount the drive if it can be seen by the Mac. Copy what software you can get off of it and reformat the drive. You should be good to go, but I would **not** trust that inclosure. You can buy a nonane enclosure for $20.00 on ebay these days

Thats better. That is a 2012 model. Mac switched from AMD to Nivita in 2012, so that means that your machine is still under warranty. The problem you describe (flickering) does lean to a hardware problem. Wether it is a graphic card or video bus problem, it is best to let apple determine this. Call them up, describe your problem and tell them that you will bring it in. It just makes things faster doing it this way as opposed to just dropping by a apple store.
One thing though, you make me nervous when yuou say that you are switching to NVidea graphics manually. Are you manually loading drivers? Don't do that! You are in dangerous territory my friend. Let the mac take care of itself and it will take care of you!

Didn't you mother ever tell you not to play with live ammo? LOL Seriously though, if you want to do modifications on the unix level, why don't you partition you HD and set up two Installs of Mountain Lion. One for testing and one for live. I have four partitions, three are bootable. One is Lion, still waiting for some software to catch up and two with Mountain Lion. One is a pristine install with nothing installed but 10.8.2. I use this to test out tweaks and "modifications" before I bring it live. Saves my bacon many of times. No big deal if I have to reinstall. The app store allows you 5 copies for free so set up as many as you see fit!

I do not understand your problem. First, you are not identifying your mac (13" or 15"). Second, the NIVIDA graphic card is far superior to the intel card. Not only does it have twice the Ram, but it also GDDR5! I can only wish I had the same delima!

Could you identify the application that you created the file in. Are you using Microsoft word or Apple pages. What OS are you using, Lion, Mountain Lion? Do you have a icloud account active?
All of these factors are important in finding your file.Lets first go under the assumption that you are using word. Then I would iniate a find looking at all files the have the extension .doc.
Pages is another beast altogether. It will have the extension of .pages. Depending on what flavor of OSX you are running and should you have an icloud account, The file may not be on your mac, but in the cloud. To check this, got to Safari and goto iCloud.com and sign in. You will notice one of the icons called iWork. Check for it in there. Should it be there, just click on the file and a download button will appear. Click on it and your file will be moved to your mac.

There are a multitude of ways! Some are free and some cost.
So, first up, free with wired connection. A app included with your OS is image capture. It is more of a image (Photo and Video) traffic cop. It recognizes a video device when it is plugged into your mac. It presents options on what you want to do with you pics, such as select photos to move to iPhoto, aperture, or any other graphic app on your mac.
Lets look at doing it free and wirelessly. Dropbox is a great way of moving ANY files from one device to another. DropBox works on your Mac, iPad, iPhone, and even your PC!
Paid solutions are suppose to make life easy. Well Photosync (1.99) is one of these apps that does exactly that. It allows you to sync photos to and from all of your devices. You can send 1, 10, 100 or all of your photos. It will even let you transfer videos from your camera too! It will allow you to place them in your dropbox.
I really did not want to mention iCloud because it is either on or off and there is no way of moving photos already existing.

Oh yea, that's a kernel panic. One of the more elusive problems to resolve. You do not mention what plugin you were using to watch your video. Best bet would be to use you install disk and start up from there, but considering that you have not responded, you cannot find them. Don't panic, at least, not yet.
Try starting up your system holding down the F key on startup. This will shutoff all third party extensions. This is what usually causes kernel panics beside someone mucking around with the system files. Should the system come up ok, it is time to uninstall any third party extensions that you have installed. Whatever software you were using to watch that video is a good place to start. In some cases it might not need to be taken off of your system, but upgraded to the newest level. Go to their website and download their newest package ands install it. Reboot in the normal fashion and see if it works.
It truly is a hit and miss procedure and it is a matter keep on trying. You state that your machine is 4 years old so it probably came with Leopard and possibably you have upgraded to Snow Leopard. If you haven't so, I strongly recommend it. The disks were $30 and you probably can find one cheaper. This time put it in a safe place that you would remember because you never know when you will need it!

macmad 29 Junior Poster in Training

I do not understand the madness of your logic. You state that you have two internal drives you want to stripe together and yet you with to backup to DVD? It makes no sense. The G4 iMac came with only one internal drive and on top of that, it is a PowerPC CPU. The last G4 to enter the market was July 2004. Thats more that 7 years ago!
Should you be actually using this because of some special software which I am at a loss at what it could be, Use DropBox to store whatever you might use, which really cannot be much. These days of 1T drives, using a DVD for backup is simply not practical. By the time you calculate out the partitions and how many dozens of disks, not to mention the labelling. It would not be a practical way of backing up. Just to throw you out an example for 1T of data; min 20 DVD's @ 10 min to burn. That is a minimum 3 hour task that you would have to be on top of for the whole time.
Best thing you could do is retire the G4 and/or go back to your old configuration... by the way, there was no option to put another drive in a G4 unless you got rid of the DVD. I am not going to touch on how you installed your OSX on a Raid setup.
Please, If you wish to post something in …

Empty trash removes the file name from the disk catalogue. The data of the file is still intact. Secure empty trash will write patterns where the data of the file is located also. This prevents anyone from retrieving the file after it has been deleted, hence secure empty trash.

You can do what you want with keystrokes. Just apply it to the app you want. Just highlight the Application shortcut and click on the + sign below the sub-window. You can either select all applications or separately as mail and/or safari, you can add as many apps as you want.

macmad 29 Junior Poster in Training

Yes, you can drag it to the trash and not worry about it. There are other components or files associated with the application. There is a plst file. This holds all on the preferences of the application so that it will be set up the same every time you launch the app and there is another related folder in application support. Both of these files are small and do not pose any weight on your system. Both of these files are in your user library file. I do not recommend touching this folder as you can corrupt your account. It will not hurt leaving them there. In future, there are apps that will remove associated files of an app. Hazel and appzapper come to mind.

It sound like the mac lost power or was abruptly turn off. This will leave files in the "open" state. Don't panic, I am confident that your data still exists. This is where having an administrator account besides your working account comes in handy. Create an account with administrator privileges and make sure that there is nothing active in the account, everything from your moviemaking software to a mail account and everything in between. You should be able to mount and repair your drives from this account. it sounds like it is time to invest in a new HD strictly for backup, maybe another Seagate.
Good luck on your teaching, I have been EBD (Elected By Default) to help out students at an elementary school into making movie clips. Its nice to teach them when they are so young. They are like sponges and are a treat to teach.

The easy solution is to hold down the control and option buttons while opening up itunes. This will let you select any iTunes database you want. Go to your time machine and replace (keep the old one for now) your music folder. Do the above and all should sync properly.
The control option sequence also works for iPhoto, but has a lot more options that are handy if you are having problems.
This should take care of any problems of loading you iphone. As for getting you pics into iphoto, use an app (already there with OSx) called Image Capture. You can get it to automatically load the pic from your phone into you iPhoto Library. Oh yea, when syncing your iphone, iTunes will state that you do not have enough memory for download and yes erase means erase.
I hope I got all of your questions answered, if not post.

Yes, there is an option to "load" text to a certain keystrokes. It is in System Preferences->keyboard->Keyboard shortcuts. You can basically put in anything you want. Whether it only applies in a certain app or anywhere. It will tell you if you have a key sequence conflict and if you really get buggered up, just hit the restore defaults. Have fun!

macmad 29 Junior Poster in Training

What do you mean that you downloaded OSX again? Does this mean that you reinstalled it from you install disk? Should this be your course of action, it is critical which option you used for the install. Now if you downloaded the install from the apple site, it would only be a upgrade and all should be fine. Did you have to create a new account when you installed the system or was your original one still there. If the account was already there, you should be fine. Now, if you did install from disk, and used the "archive and install" option, not all is lost. Look for a previous system folder in you top directory. This will have your old account there. Give me a shout and I will tell you how to get it back.
Safari missing. do you mean it was not in the dock? The Dock only holds aliases so you have quick access to your favourite apps. The alias can be retrieved by going to the Application folder and dragging the app to the dock. The icon will disappear if you drag it off of the dock in a puff of smoke. This is so you can have maximum flexibility with what you have in the dock.

Deleting files is a two step process. When you delete a file, it moves it to the trash. Then you must empty the trash. There is software that will empty the trash if it goes over a certain limit. Hazel comes to mind.

There is so many companies offering server access, the list is huge. Singapore is a very modern city and there are probably dozens you can choose from. Your situation involves a twist on searching for a hosting company. I am not sure if english is you native language and/or you site is in english. Should this be the case, I would recommend that the support staff/help desk be fluent in english. You are close enough to Japan or India, and should be able to find a good deal. There is nothing stopping you from selecting a North American site. Once you narrow down your choices, call up the help desk and see if it works.
A lot of hosting sites offer monthly and/or yearly rates. Considering that this is your first go, I would recommend that you take the monthly rate and if they work for you, then consider the cheaper yearly rate. You will probably notice that a lot of these hosting sites will offer a free domain. Watch this one, because it will trap you to their services for a year. Make sure that it is transferable and that it is registered in your name.
You are going to find out that there is a lot to setting up a website besides the webpages, but if you spend the time at it, grasshopper, you have taken a step closer to your geek badge. Keep in touch and any questions, you know how to thread.

User themes are the background picture(s) you see when you log into your mac. These are set at a user level, so it can vary to the user wishes. This is controlled in the system preferences. You wish to change the position of the dock, look in system preference too. You wish to change what drives show up on your desktop, that is set in the finder preferences. There are many ways to create a website. For free.... well, that really depends on what you mean by free. You could take a crash course and learn html code. There are several apps, that will create web pages without any html. These usually retail anywhere from $30 to $80. Mac comes with an app, Iweb, that allows you to create web pages, but you can only publish it if you have a mobile me account.
You can get your own domain, which should only cost you somewhere between $10 to $18 per year. It depends on the domain name (.com .ca .net .org).
Hosting is usually a company that rents you space on their servers to allow people to see your website. The cost can be as low as $5 to several hundreds, depending on what you want. It sounds like you want a relativity simple site so your cost should be in the $5 to $10 range. Contrary to popular belief, your hosting company does not have to be in your area. It can be several thousands of miles away and in different countries. Isn' t the web wonderful, distance doesn't matter although I would recommend you keep it on the same continent.
You do have the option of hosting the website off of your mac. I would only recommend this to someone very experienced in the mac and the web. it takes a lot of work and knowledge to keep the hacking hounds at bay!

The difference between Leopard (10.5.?) and Snow Leopard (10.6.?) is mostly "under the hood". The user interface was hardly touched, but a lot of the old code (PPC) was replaced and the system was overhauled. There are too many sites that go into detail on the changes, including apple. The two main improvements was the size of the install and the performance of the system.
Lion ,10.7 is the new OS coming out, some say by late spring. They have seeded the first build to select developers for testing. This process can take several months and is the way Apple fine tunes their system. Word is that it will have a lot of the ios 4.? look and feel. Time will tell. Personally I hope not.

Stuff missing in my account and/or all my stuff missing. The common thread seems to be that you are booting off of the wrong disk, especially DiFFeReNT.The globe points to a network boot and if unavailable, it will wait. Unplugging the network cable will have it boot to the system drive. Guess what, your files are not there because you are not there! It sounds like you have a big enough shop to have tech support. Did you call them?
Tas, do you have an external drive hooked up to the system and/or several bootable partitions? OSX will not startup from a previous system folder. The previous system folder is created when you do an archive and install option. Check the date of the file and you know when and probably who installed the new system. You are going to have to run software update to get you system up to the latest version.
The archive and install option will not wipe out your user file. Simply do a search for your user name and look at the date of your previous system folder. The one you have is wrong, delete the account using the Save the home folder in a disk image and migrate the one from the previous system folder. Do not trying to copy it as it will not work. The last "virus" I have seen on a mac was back in 94 on 8.1. It intrigued us so much at the shop we kept it around for quite a while, just to muck around with it. You want to protect yourself, backup! One thing that you should keep in mind though is the mac may not damaged by a virus, but it certainly can pass it on to another system, especially through the mail system. In most cases, these "threat sites" that preach doom and gloom, reefer to these virus as infecting the mac. Yes, technically they are on the mac, but they do no harm. The only damage they do is when they get passed back to a windows machine. There is one exception and they use this as part of their "doom and gloom"; Macs with windows on them! The windows get affected->windows on Mac-> Mac is infected. God, the things people say to get money out of you!
Now Trojan Horses is a different matter. I really have only one thing to say on this, "Stupid is As Stupid Does".
Enough said.

Hey, guys, my first time here. I wanna know if there is any way to run windows on a MacBook.

There are several ways. Two questions come to mind. Do you want to reboot into windows, or do you want to have it open up as another window (money).
Bootcamp will let you do it for free, but you have to reboot into windows. You want the privilege of opening up a window for windows, its going to cost you. The two leading contenders are vmware fusion, and parallels 6. They both run at around $80, but I imagine you can easily find it cheaper somewhere. I really depends on who you talk to on which is better. Me, I say 6 of 1 and a half a dozen of the other.

A line of code and no updates for a year. Wow, where do we start. You state that you cannot run Disk Utility. That (hopefully) points to a permission problem. Create another account with administrator privilege and try to run Disk Utility. Should that not work, enable the root account and try again. Should that not work, could be reinstall. It would be nice if you could post the "line of code". We may be able to reverse what you did in terminal. Also, please post the error you get in the system log when you try to run disk utility.
Software updates. You can go onto the apple site and download the latest update. Considering the time lapse, you must be several versions down. Should you take this path, please download the last "combo" system update (Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update). It will have the latest two system updates, but better yet, It will have all the necessary files for your mac. This alone may clear up both of your problems.
These two procedures will not do and damage to your system and may clear up your problems. Please remember to disable root after you finish (Type enable root in help on how to do)!

ps Still like to see the "line of code"

When you opened up the display panel in the system preferences, there was a list of resolutions displayed. The setting that your screen was at was highlighted. If you click on another resolution, the screen will switch so you can see what it would look like. The screen resolution that you have selected (1344 X 756) is not on the recommended list for a 27" imac. Click on one of the three mentioned before and if you are satisfied with it, close the display panel.

A 27" imac has an aspect ratio of 16:9 ( standard HD). Apple states that you can go up to 2560 by 1440 pixels. Apple states that there Supported resolutions for a 27" display are:2560 by 1440 pixels, 1920 by 1080 pixels, 1280 by 720 pixels. Do not worry about trying them. The Display panel will let you switch resolutions to see what works for about 5 seconds and if you do not like it , it will default back to your last setting. Want to keep the setting, hit return.
Apple presents you with many different resolutions and some will not work properly for your screen. Some may leave you with vertical bars down each side or the information will not fit on the screen.
