One way to figure if it's a software problem or not is to enter the system setup and see if the keyboard works there. If yes, it's a software problem. If not, it means a hardware issue. See if you can borrow another keyboard to confirm your diagnosis. Also, try …

Yeah, I had the same problem, though this was McAfee Security Center. I switched to Avast and that works fine. I've also tried Norton 2009 - works perfectly.

Did you try Dell Tech Support? Pretty sure they ought to be able to help you. Otherwise, try removing the RAM sticks and then try powering the system. Does it beep at all? Also, when you switch on the system, do the fans rotate?

To ensure that the drive itself is fine, try using the Windows built in CD recording s/w to burn a disc. Insert a blank CD in the drive and open a My Documents window. Right click on any file, point to "Send To" and select "CD-RW drive". Once you do …

You need to give us more info. Is D drive the CD Drive or a hard drive? If its the CD drive, try restarting the computer. If this doesn't help, check for loose connections, scan for viruses and remove and reinstall the CD drive from Device Manager.

Try running a diagnostic on the memory in your system. Use the Windows Built in Memory Diagnostic which can be obtained from the F8 menu or click Start > Run and type in ‘mdsched’ and restart the comp. Post back what happens

I have to agree. Cracking (its the correct term, BTW) is illegal, unethical and wrong. If you do crack into accounts for any reason, you deserve to be punished maximum.

Try popping the RAM sticks out and cleaning the sticks and the RAM slots. From what I can guess from your beeps (as much as I can decipher, that is), this seems to be a RAM problem. But as DMR said, give us the exact beep sequence and we'll go …

I have to agree with TheNNS. Considering the fact that the discs work in the other XP machines, the CD is OK. Try running the CD on a different Vista machine. Also, try reading the CD in Safe Mode. If that doesn't work, you're probably looking at a bad drive. …

Try running the Dell diagnostics. Press F12 when you see the Dell Logo and choose "Boot to Utility Partition" from the Boot time menu. Once it loads up, click on Express Test and then choose Video or Graphics. Let me know what the results say.

I'd like to add that disabling SMART is not recommended. SMART monitors your Hard drive for any impending failures and alerts you in advance if it detects anything abnormal with the drive. I strongly recommend you keep SMART enabled.
